Calibration Method

01/09/2008 7:46 AM

A few days ago, a client ask me related how many calibration method exist. So I ma answer was simulation method, comparison method, massic method (for mass flow meter) in overall. But I do not if exist additional methods.

Calibration method for what instrument?

by definition, all calibrations must be a comparison to a standard. Whether it be a meter, a Kg, a temperature point, or a combination (kg/cm^2).

My dear..

Calibration has got to be a comparison method wrt to a certified precalibrated standard/Master instrument, the traceabilty of which is up to approved agencies if you are doing it under Certified norms of ISO 9001 or ISO14001 etc.By any means the simulation you have mentioned is just for generating the required similar operating signals of basically input nature to you instrument to help you test your instrument under calibration in you calibration bench.Simulation that means is required off-line at cal benches. In any calibration procedure you will need a suitably measured input and check the output and measure it..So every instrument/transducer has its own Calibration procedure/method which can be written down previous to doing the same.

Your client's question is vague. Calibration methods for what?

If I wanted to calibrate a temperature probe, I can use an oil bath or a heat block. Those are two separate methods and they're only for temperature probes. I haven't specified what kind of temperature probes they are. Additional methods exist for each type.

Besides, what's the point of the question? Why ask?

Certainly the client has asked calibration methods for calibrating measuring instruments.

Now you are absolutely right about as for an example of a temperature probe. Please note that using an oil bath or heat balock are not separate methods. In this case you are just having different sources of input (simulation) conditions. The check or calibration procedure remains the same. But every type of probe or sensor will have its own procedure as I mentioned earlier. Now here I have mentioned a"check"...because certain probes can be checked only and not calibrated like RTD sensor cannot be calibrated it can be checked only. The calibration has to be done fir its electronics part where you can adjust zero and span to adjust to match a standard/Master meter using RTD/temp tables etc.Similarly for thermocoules. You cannot calibrate a thermocouple the basic sensor...but the related electronics/processor to indicate the values.

So as you said already different methods /procedures for each tpe..
