Pumping any liquid close to its boiling temperature is difficult, as when it is sucked into the inlet of a pump it may boil and cause the pump to cavitate.

Electrically-powered pumps designed for steam condensate are readily available, though submersible ones are practically unknown.

How about an 'Ogden' steam-driven pump? Spirax Sarco (usual disclaimer) make them.

Ogden is now obselete. The new name is condensate power pump .

The photo of the packaged unit is right under may name. The following manufacturers make similar pump like mine: Spirax Sarco, Armstrong, Bestobell, Watson McDaniel, Gestra, TLV, Yarway, Johnson Corporation, Spence & Nicholson, ITT Domestic, Clark Reliance, Dunham Bush and couple of others.

These pumps operates on steam/air and handles 100C condensate. Since there is no moving part except a hollow body with a retrofit float unit warranted for 1,000,000 operation they are virtually fit & forget. No cavitation, no electricity.

Put the power pump in a dry pit beside the sump pit and take the inlet to the power pump . These pumps can handle up to 6000 Kg/hr & maximum height 135ft.

Available in cast iron, carbon steel & stainless steel body both in verticals & horizontal models.

Apart from these you can use Jet Pumps too. They are similar like "Ejectors" used to create vacuum in Soap plants or de-aerators at vegetable oil plants.Serch the net for Jet Pumps or Croyll Reynolds.

Many thanks for your prompt and informative reply

However this options sounds expensive !!! , unfortunately costs are a factor whatis the ball park cost !

If i can reduce the sump pit temp to say around 80 oC is there a more conventional option (using submersable sump pumps)

The boiler blowdown water first enters a blowdown vessel which is then quenched with cold water to reduce the temp

this issue is when attempting to emty a 12 MW tube and shell boiler into this sump

If the water is not cool enough ( obviously wait until cool but i dont always have the option )

Kind regards

Do you just want to dump the water out of the sump? How much?

Take the principles of the jet pump and make your own. I normally drain sump/pit by taking a 1" simple Tee. Invert it. Fit a 1" pipe to reach the bottom of the sump/pit.

At inlet of tee fit in a 1/2" air/steam pipe with a ball valve. Fit a 1" pipe at the outlet of the tee taking it to the drain. Open valve, the velocity of air/steam will drain out the sump/pit.Close it when empty or, fit a solenoid valve with a level controller to on/off automatically with the level of water in the sump/pit. This you have made a "crude" ejector. If you look at the jet pump it works exactly like this. If the quantity of water is a lot then take a 2" tee . The 1/2" air/steam will be same at inlet tapped with a 2"x1/2" reducing bush. The suction & discharge will be 2". The cheapest option I can give.
