Hatch is Too Small

02/01/2008 2:38 PM

We have an access hatch that is 12" too narrow for the opening in the concrete slab for a resivoir in a water treatment plant. Any ideas on how to make the hatch work? The ruff opening is 9 ft by 10 ft and the hatch is 8ft by 10ft. The hatch is equiped with a 12" high curb with 3-1/2" flanges around the perimeter.

What about a 12" extension or beam on 2 of the sides?

What 1/2 is your avatar?

"What about a 12" extension or beam on 2 of the sides?"

What about a hatch stretcher?

Ask me a toughie! Weld yourself an ell shaped flange onto the puppy so that you get coverage and a safety lip. Now if the hatch had been too big, you might have had a problem.

Ah. I revel in my Godlike powers

First of all make sure your slab hasn't got them damn stress cables! If you mess with them, they'll mess with you(literally). Second if it has a steel flange already imbedded, just add 6" plate steel to each side. Third if it's just some rebar and concrete, just break away some concrete and form up for a new pour for the proper dimensions. Make sure to drill for and epoxy steel dowels each way. Don't remember the exact requirements; but, I think its like 6" for #5 rebar. Or break away at least enough concrete to get a lap on your steel at least 3 to 5 times the diameter of your rebar(Check code in your area).

Thanks for the help.

The architect has agreed to use 2 bent angle as inserts. They are reinforced and will be supported with Hilti anchors. I wish I could insert a drawing so all of you can have a look at it but they also want some flashing to go around it where it is short which I think is a waist of time and money.

Thanks again.
