Is Molly Brown unsinkable twice?

02/19/2008 8:28 AM

My parents (in their 70's) live in Leadville, Colorado and I live in Georgia now, and I am in desperate need of NON-BIASED opinions about a possible catastrophe related to water buildup in the mines above the town possibly wiping out the city and obviously the environmental damage goes without saying (Cd, PB, Zn, Hg...)... I really appreciate any info....I am pretty sure that my hydraulic theories have been clouded by emotion...

thanks

Hi Cris - You can add Uranium to your list.

We have worked out mines that must keep on pumping. The plug between the two mines were over mined (greed?) and without pumping the plug will blow and . . . .

Some of the water are used for irrigating crops. They pump the water to settling dams on top of the hill and irrigate from there.

Mines did serve the economy of the regions well but unfortunately the possible environmental and social impacts were ignored or was unknown.

There are plans in SA to pump and pipe the mine water and sludge from a sensitive area to a cleaner area where the water and silt will be separated and "clean" water released in a wetland. I am awaiting the publishing of the Environmental Management Plan (study and comment on it).

In SA the public possibly affected by an action may comment on the plans.

Thanks for the reply....part of our problem is that there is a couple hundred foot 'head' and the most of the town is built on top of honey-combed web of abandoned mines...

It is my guess that it has become the world's largest sprinker system with 8'-10' penstocks for delivery to a few hundred sprinkler heads...

as for the heavy metals....just plug in the periodic tables

So the plan in SA is to redistribute the waste water somewhere else where the environment is less impacted. or is there actually a plan to remove the contaminants to below drinking water standards, or at least below the levels found in the region where it is to be disposed of. It is sort sounds like California and New Jersey shipping their nuclear wste to Arkansas, because there is less nuclear contamination there. Spread the wealth, or waste, around as it were. Or maybe a shell game, which shell are we hiding it under now?

you sir are very perceptive. Had this been Aspen or Vail, with a Hollywood star or two on CNN, Leadville's only problem would have been where to build all of the hotels to hold all of the people cleaning up the mess carrying buckets of water for the cameras.

I live in South Florida. When they call a hurricane warning I get bottled water and stock up on gas.

I would get my parents on bottled water and move them out of there as soon as possible

Thanks for the reply....have you ever tried to tell a man that is 6'1/285lbs that has worked underground 40 years what he is 'gonna do'? I have been on the phone with them twice a day since this all started...pray for us. They have my aunt's to go to near Delta, but convincing them is another matter.

Chris

Call your Aunt and have her convince them. She has to have pull with one of them (your Mom or Dad) and she can blackmail them. That worked for me when I had to get my folks off the beach right before Andrew.

Good luck

As the Gen. said in the movie "Wargames", " Heck, I'd wet on a sparkplug to get them to leave..." or words to that effect....
