Calculation of Pressure Testing

Hi, It's me again

my thesis is getting me a headache.

I was reading the ASME B31.3 and B31.4 and ASME VIII Div 1. But I cant understand how can I get that Pressure testing, With Pt=1.5Pd(S/S) and 1.3Pd

I cant understand that way to get the Pressure testing.

Somebody knows how? Abdel? hehehe

Hi - Maybe you should have your eyes tested first. When your headache is taken care of you could:- get more of the ASME codes.

Pressure testing procedure will be also be described under health and safety. Search for that - I have also heard about a PUB-3000 that contain some procedure on it.

The hydrostatic test pressure shall be :

a. For ASME BPVC, Section VIII, Div. 1: Ph = 1.3 Pd (Sd/Samp)

b. For ASME B31.3: Ph = 1.5 Pd (Sd/Samp) [Para. 345.4.2]

Ok, values for Sd and Samp, I find in the Tables A1 and B1 for B31.3


But, how can I finde Pd and the design temperature?

Pd is the design pressure in which you designed your piping system, or it is the max. allowable working pressure MAWP. Or it may be nearly equal to the set pressure of safety valve designed to protect your piping system.

The design temp. is the max. expected temp. in which the piping system will operate. The design temp. is very important where we have to find the corresponding allowable tensile strength of material Sd from stress tables.

Erosion and corrosion will reduce the MAWP over time as the vessel ages. The Inspector/Surveyor/Engineer for the company supplying burst/collapse indemnity insurance cover on the equipment will determine the MAWP and the test pressure as part of the periodic insurance assessment.
