12dc pond solar pump continous use

Hi I'm after a submersible pump for my little fish pond, I'm running 25w of solar panel through a charge controller to a 12v Wheelchair battery to achieve 24h operation of a pump creating a little waterfall into the pond. I had a pump with 400 l/h flow but after putting some filtration on it I probably burnt it out.

I've found it really hard to find a pump that would match my need (at least one that's not too big and costs less than $300+)

So I'm after a new pump around 5w that can run continuously in my pond. My preferred price would probably be around the $100 mark but I'll just have to see what's available

That's what I just did, especially for you, to obtain the information.

Your other alternative would be to look in the Melbourne Yellow Pages of the telephone Directory, under any of the various categories: Pumps; Garden Supplies; Landscape Supplies, and the like.

Er, does the process flow cool the pump motor? If so, then it isn't the pump that has failed. The failure is one of not dealing with the filter blockage (filters are designed to block - that's their job!) that has caused the pump to burn out through lack of cooling flow. In which case, replacing the pump like-for-like and invoking a more rigorous programme of planned preventative maintenance on the filter will suffice.

It is also possible that the pump has "burnt out" due to water ingress, affecting anything from the terminals to the commutator to the windings to its bearings to its ability to spin. Water is conductive to varying degrees and will electrolyse in the presence of conductive species, particularly affecting certain metals. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ingress_protection_rating would suggest IP68 as the requirements for a submersible pump; look for this on the manufacturer's information on either the outer packaging or the instructions. There are specially-designed pond/waterfall pumps available for this purpose at many garden centre retail outlets.

have you considered a marine bilge pump. I've been using a Rule one for years now

A couple of features to look for in your next purchase.

1. Magnetic drive is a must. This will prevent motor burn out due to filter clogs. It will also protect your pump if any debris bypasses around a clogged filter. If time allowed for filter maintenance is a problem then oversize your filter box.

2. Oil filled motor. The oil helps to transfer heat to the outer shell so it can be dissipated more readily as well as keeping the bearings lubed.

I am currently using Little Giant pond pumps. We have some that are 11 years old and still going strong. These are 110 VAC not the 12 VDC that you are looking for.

I still havent got a new pump but I'm just about to order a brushless DC Water pump from Alita. It seems to be exactly what I'm after so I'll let you know how it turn out...
