it's called volumeteric karl fischer for water content (100ppm to 100 % of water)

N.B:

100ppm = 0.0001%

Sorry to be pedantic but 100ppm = 0.01%

There are two methods of tests at lap using pinch top: a. Distillation and b. Conductivity, but I don't have any information about the availability of a portable device.

Hi,

distillation is plagued by the problem of separating the water from the other volatile compounds,

the conductivity method is plagued by the nonuniform salt content of the water: only the ionic condustivity of the salts in the dissolved water is measured.

There was a capacitive device able to measure in field, if necessary I can dig my old papaers.

I would try distilling with subsequent water absorption in either CaCl2 or other highly hygroscopic material. This absorption would not absorb (disturbing amounts of) hydrocarbons.

Hi Paulo,

http://www.utahbiodieselsupply.com/biodieselwatertestkit.php

I used this device for testing biodiesel, waste vegetable oil & methanol for water content.

Very good results, accurate to 0.1% the manufacturer claims to 0.01%

Uses a reagent that reacts with water & produces hydrogen gas..... Pressure

Very portable, you just have to keep the reagents [chemicals] dry.

This article in Physicsworld relate to a product form Smart Holograms.

While it is not yet a continuous measurement system, it could be converted into one.

Or the swelling principle could be adapted to a different measurement system.

Have you tried, or looked at Karl Fischer titrations for water content? Suggest you start there. The reagent is sold in most chemical supply houses.
