It appears to be a variation on a theme - combination bull nose ring and calf weaning ring - similar to this:

I had to read up on that. What's the animal-rights vs Vet view on nose-rings ? It causes a lot of outrage with bears, so what's the difference ? Just curious.

Just my opinion:

What's 'different' is that calves have been separated from their mothers at this early stage since time immemorial, and vets have certified that this method causes less stress than the other way.

In other words, we can be beastly to cattle because they are only food animals and we've always done it, whereas only nasty johnny foreigner was still being nasty to bears. (I admit that nastiness extended rather further than just the halter, but it's still no excuse for the way we allow cattle to be treated)

Right you are! Wherein I have seen theoretical humans wearing yet more outlandish facial piercings than what's seen here. Some of 'em appear to have fallen face-first into a tackle box and come out wearing half the contents!

I thought Kris had this discussion the other day - investigating the contents of a purse and giving the remains to the cat (you said they were toy mice). The spelling was a bit different, as I recall... Would likely make you walk a bit different, too!

The original looks as if it was equally effective at discouraging suckling, but less of an obstruction when grazing - but I bet that's an Iljushin.

Ummmmmmm it may be familiar to you but to me its a red thing with silvery black stripes...

I was going to say a red pencil between two rulers, but the markings aren't equal so maybe two grotty rulers?

The shading/reflections suggests that at least the orange line is a liquid in a tube.

I'd have said a red ballpoint pen or some kind of thermometer, except that (like you) I can't get my head around the markings.

So why do the scales look uneven?

Because one side is Fahrenheit and the other is Centigrade.

Re: Challenge 5

That would be why the two sides are different.

But each side is also very uneven - the right side more so than the left.

If they were F and C, would the right hand one be in steps of 1/4 degree F and the left in 0.1 degree C?
I think you are suggesting it's a poorly marked, high-resolution, alcohol thermometer?

It's an alcohol thermometer. Whether graduated in degF or degC I cannot say.

It is a thermometer with both Celsius and Fahrenheit scales. It could be hand-crafted, which would explain the uneven markings.

It's a thermometer with seperate scales to read both farenheit and celsius.

Re: Challenge 5

After careful consideration, I'm not convinced it's a thermometer! The two scales when compared with another thermometer do not concur due to the RHS scale having that uneven mark even when placed at specific points on the other thermometer like boiling point, freezing point, etc ! The other marks are too close for comfort! I'm now going to look for images of kitchen scales!

Scratch that! A Barometer?

OK. the weird 'cattle nose piercing' is indeed to stop the calf suckling, the mother tends to move out of the way!

and as to the other 'thing', -

I have to admit, you lot are getting a bit good....

So what's with the uneven scale markings ? Take it back to the Pound Shop, unless you can use it for emergency alcohol supply.

There are sooo many spelling variants, each with their own degree of expression. I'm pretty sure I'd be rendered speechless if I saw that coming ! One that big would have both ends covered.
