Motors and the Social Concern!

04/18/2008 1:02 AM

do manufacturers from motors base their design on what earnings they will make from it only or do they pay attention to also what the buyer/user will he spend during and over the life time of the motor and the utilities provider will have to generate extra energy and consume more resources then what should normally be consumed, and all this result in the depletion of our resources globally ! what is the yard stick and who controls and guides our society on this aspect ! who can help me understand this situation please !

The purpose of any manufacturer is to receive return on capital investment (make money). In order to do so he needs to supply a commodity acceptable to the targeted buyer.

The consumer has the power (if not in a monopolistic situation) of selecting what product to buy and that will eventually influence quality. Consumers however buy without thinking and allow the manufacturer to produce bad and greedy quality.

Earnings drives the design... Humans are generally inclined toward thinking in terms of the short term... I suppose in regards to yard sticks and control, what society are you talking about? There are hundreds of societies around the world, each with their own agenda. Who is going to control that?

First they have to stay in business, so they will make the most profitable motor that will sell. They may make a profitable motor that uses twice as much electricity. That is when the customer's ability to choose comes into play. If the customers want to use less electricity they won't buy them and the manufacturer won't make a profit. Since he wants a profit he will redesign and make one that will sell, one that customers want.

The price will be high enough to make a profit and low enough to sell and it may not be made to be environmentally perfect if it is unprofitable or too expensive. Only the manufacturer and the customer should set the yard stick and control and guide our societies. Most of all the corrupt, venal or self-centered politicians in governments should not control and guide this.

There is a difference between motor and engine and the original post was about motors. If you wish to research engines to increase the average fuel consumption, you will bear the expenditure, unless you are well educated and work for a large company in the field. Spelling helps to show education, so you should learn it or at least realize that this site red-lines misspelled words. You also need to learn to use the keyboard.
