NEED EXPERTISE !

04/24/2008 5:31 PM

I am having little success in indentifying valves (I know the type, but not the

various alloys, etc. that make up the trim, etc.) -- Can anyone give me any

hints for identifying OLD parts, triM, etc.? I have one or two so old, no part

numbers exist. Thank you ! I have a few old catalogues that have helped up

until this part, but I am at a loss now.

Is there any chance of posting some photographs?

Water valves

Gas valves

Thermionic valves

check valves

the list is endless.... car engine valves etc...

No wonder you're having little success in identifying a valve!!

I am probably just grasping for straws out of desperation - am employed in refining

industry and taken on a "project" that is near impossible -- Am getting some pictures

from various angles of the few that remain unidentified. Have exhausted every other

resource I can locate and received help from a variety --- one engineering instructor

in Austin was actually challenged by one description -- long story short? valve p/n

checked out to 'out of print' catalogue he maintained in personal library at over ---

48 years old ! Will try to post pictures asap. My last effort will be soliciting

expertise from the pro's via website --- possibly someone with much more

experience/knowledge that I have will know of a source that is not "standard" in the

industry -- afterall, I think people interested/associated with this website are

(in general) THINKER'S -- AND DEFINITELY THINK OUTSIDE THE STANDARD,

NORM ! Thanks ...

Almost all that I cannot identify are associated with chemical, oil, gasoline, oil field

refining/recovery/drilling ---- doesn't seem like much of a limitation, but it is the

best I can do --

Trying to get pictures from various angles. These are the remaining few valves from

a project I inherited -- near impossible to complete. Hoping some of the thinker's

(who have more experience/knowledge that I do) who belong to this website and

who definitely think "outside the norm" may have an unconventional source !

Am employed in petrochemical industry -- one professor in Austin was intrigued by

one valve description (INCOMPLETE) that he finally located it in an outdated

out of print catalogue in his personal library. There are only a few left to identify,

they are all related to oilfield/drilling/recovery -- chemical/gasoline refining --

not much 'limitation' there in a "sea" of various valves, but so far, that is the

best I can determine from the unidentified valves. Thanks !

What is so special about these valves - outside that you want them identified? And once you got that, then what? I have real difficulty to conjure up the image of a 50+ years old valve in continouos hard use. Is it a collection for museum?

A modern replacement for any purpose should not be hard at all. Or, am I barking up the wrong tree here entirely?

I can understand your question, completely -- I live in an area that is basically

supported by oil/chemical/etc. industries and there is a small museum -- for

lack of a better word in an old sort of "restored" area -- I guess it is 'historical'

to the older resident's here -- I am not originally from here, so naturally it does

not have the sentimental value to me that it does to some of the local retiree's --

It is small, but has many pictures, etc. of the 'old' days, I think a small very

old pump jack, etc. People (this is an area suitable for retiree's) who have worked

in the industry - especially older people - seem to enjoy visiting it and looking at

what most of us would consider junk -- so, why not help out, if I can. It is just

a community low-key project (totally volunteer) to provide a little history to those

interested. Not looking for a 'pat on the back' 'payment' or any 'publicity' --

in my opinion, all volunteer work should remain anonymous -- BUT that is a personal

view -- many get satisfaction from volunteer activities in other way. Personally,

I just wanted to help out, when I realized this little 'attraction' actually had a

few visitors ! I don't even know if it is sanctioned as a 'museum' as such ! It

is quite small, have no idea how it is funded and am not really into that

part -- someone else can deal with the other aspects -- I have previousy set

up one complete oilfield warehouse faciity and in doing so had to identify many

items (for tax purposes) that were inherited and could not be disposed of --- several

were ancient--but after several months, I finally finished the identification, etc.

needed and was left with 1 valve -- no one could tell 'how' old it was. Thought

I could help out by using the same methods of identifying this little "graveyard"

of parts --- again, maybe my ego takes up more space than my knowledge !

Thanks for your interest --

this clarifies my point -- the other reason, is now that I am somewhat involved,

I am rather 'bullheaded' and can't stand the idea that I cannot locate the information

I am researching ! Ego, I guess ! Thanks for
T

Good for you! Many good things grow from such grassroots efforts.

An idea. If you approach some metallurgy labs, you may find likeminded individuals willing to help you for free to identify the metal. The chemistry and crystalline structure changed over time, that little I know. So try, nothing is wasted by it. Good luck.
