How People in the World Spend Their 5.1 Day?

04/30/2008 1:23 AM

5.1 Day is so-called international labour day (Mayday). we have a holiday for celebrating it. we use to see film, opera, go to trip or stay at home to play card, chess etc.

I wonder how the people from various countries spend this day?

I think that I will be mostly getting wankered in the local pub with the rest of the pool team.

Beats opera all day long

In my country, people will usually get out of the country for a short weekend vacation, especially since this year it falls on a Thursday.

Then three days afterwards it's Star Wars Day - "May the fourth (sic) be with you!"

In Texas we don't celebrate May 1st so it is just a regular day of work. May 5th does get celebrated, usually at the pub as well..

May 1 is a holiday here in the Philippines. Union members usually stage a rally or something on this day.

In the past years, I usually stayed at home. This year, I'll be working. The factory's shutdown right now but, since maintenance never sleeps, I have to be there to oversee those non-union guys who'll be working.

Yep, here in the US we go to work. May Day is at it's roots a socialist holiday to pay homage to labor. I believe the Soviets used the day to flex it's military muscle.

The answer to May Day in the US is Labor Day where you get the obligitory video montages on the news of union guys working the line while playing a country song in the back ground.

Similarly, May 5 or Cinco de Mayo has similar status in the US as St. Patric's day but I have a feeling that this year it will take on political overtones with the illegals demanding to be forgiven for breaking US immigration laws. (As a side note, you just go sneak across Mexico's Southern border and see how welcome the Federalies make you feel. For some reason everyone, the bleeding hearts, the pro-illegal-migrants, (and they are migrants, not immigrants because an immigrant will assimulate, learn the language and become a citizen, not stay here and suck on the public nipple)), the Mexican government and American politicians (the politicians see a whole new dependancy class and a new block of voters and are motivated by a keen sense of self interest) seem to think it's ok for Mexico to secure it's Southern border but at the same time think it is deplorable for the US to secure our Southern border.

Actually 01May has it's roots in a much older tradition than the Socialist revolution. It's original name was "Beltane" or "Baltian" meaning "God's fire". Not the Christian God, but the Old Horned God of the Pagans.

It was a celebration that the winter was over and that you had made it through alive. There was a feast made of what ever was left over from the winter and the entire community contributed. There was also much drinking. Unfortunately, one of the most common drinks was something called "Mai wine", (vile stuff) what wine connoisseurs would call "dead green".

That ties in with my post #10, Jack in the green is celebrated all around the UK to mark the end of winter & rebirth of spring. The 'jack' takes many forms around the country, our local one is made from leaves & flowers and, at the end of a long ceremony is dismantled & thrown to the crowd.

Our 'Mayday' holiday yesterday was a brilliant sunny day. It's a strange day in Hastings as we had about 26,000 motor bikes in the town for their annual rally plus the traditional Jack-in-the-green celebration. See the pictures here & read about the Jack here.

Very traditional in a pagan sense, some of them take it way too seriously but it's generally good fun.

While on my way to work this May 1 day, a friend asked me why I was working on Labor Day. I said,

"The guys who labor get a day's rest per year. Slaves, however, never get rest."

Heck... In America we work. It seems like most of the time holidays are frowned on because they take away from production. If some companies had their way, all holidays would be work days. We even have a couple of business's here that work on Christmas. We have a holiday here, Veteran's Day. Veterans don't even get that day off. Now if you are a government worker, you get twice the holidays a regular worker gets, but the regular worker has to work, to pay the taxes, for the holiday pay the government workers get.

Here in Guatemala it is also a holiday. A time for those UNION guys to fight for my rights. The silly thing is, since I work in maintenance, I´m ACTUALLY working. So, pour out onto the street UNION guys while I work on the machines that put food on your table on the very holiday you enjoy.

Cnpower, 01MAY is celebrated differently in all parts of the world, Some by joyous and raucous partying, but sadly most by just a tic on the calender.

01MAY began as a Pagan celebratory rite for fertility in the coming year, known as "Beltain" or "Beltane" meaning God Fire, not the Christian god but the old masculine ideal of Deity, i.e. "The Horned God", Cernunos, Herne, Pan etc.

So many ancient festivals and traditions have been altered or fallen by the wayside that I wonder what the truth of history is.

Sorry, just rambling.

You friend, Dragon

Times is going forward, custom is been changing by people time to time according to their willing.

Different age has different convention. old rite disappears and new celebration occurs

This may be history.

History is wrote by human. Different people has different idea or viewpoint. and can write different articles.

I read many history books in the past but I dont know which is true history. I hv experienced that yesterday it was wrong, but tomorrow will be right.

forget it, I m not historian, I can know only some basic engineering knowledge is always true.

In India too, it a Labour Holiday. What I do not understand is the meaning of 'Labour'. As all who can - will take a holiday irrespective of whether they are labourers or not. The meaning of Labour Day and the efforts towards it are totally out of context in today's world.

For some in the US May 1 is a payday. So, in addition to working they get to enjoy activities such as going to the bank, paying bills, buying groceries, running errands, etc.

I moved to Spain! Any excuse for a holiday and they take it! May 1st was a Thursday so instead of just one day, they include Friday as well to make it into a long weekend! I am spending my long weekend sanding down wooden windows and shutters! I'm tired of the traditional Nijar brown! I think 40 years ago a cargo ship full of brown paint stopped here! Everywhere you look is covered in brown! My front door had 8 layers of slightly different shades of brown! Now it's bright blue and adds a bit of ole to the village!
