When laptop inherent engineering faults meet the law

05/10/2008 5:55 AM

I have an Acer 5920G Duo Core 2Mhz laptop which, with 3 year warranty and Microsoft Office cost nearly £1000 new 3 months ago from laptopsdirect.co.uk. Within 2 weeks it broke. It was returned and within 2 weeks it broke. It was returned and within 1 week it broke. The last time I didn't even use it, except to have it switched on so I could monitor if it broke again. It did.

The fault? Suddenly switches off and then there is no response at all from the laptop. The battery is charged and the adapter is functioning.

The first time it was returned (to Acer UK), they replaced the motherboard.

The second time it was returned (even with exactly the same symptoms), they claim they simply "re-seated" the power supply. I believe they replaced the motherboard again but didn't say so incase it reflected badly on their overall design of same.

This time, as it languishes on top of the very box and packaging in which they returned it to me last week, ready for me to decide whether ot not I send it back to them or not, I suspect it is again the motherboard.

My question to you is this: When do you think I have the right to a refund or replacement model?

I rely on my laptop for my business and the first time it broke I was stranded in Spain for 2 weeks without a laptop but with all my valuable information ON the laptop and totally inaccessible until I returned to the UK 2-3 weeks later, sent it to Acer for repair and received it back 3 days later. When it happened again back in the UK I was forced to go and buy a new laptop (a Dell Inspiron 1520 from PCWorld). When it happened the third time (last night) any used it had was simply academic as I cannot risk designing website on a laptop that dies on me and, as I said, I am now using another laptop that I was forced to purchase 3 weeks ago.

I have asked the retailer Easy Computers Ltd (sic) trading as laptopsdirect.co.uk and easycomputers.co.uk for a refund. They said they cannot. I have asked Acer Uk for a refund. They said they cannot. I asked Citizens Advice (sic) their advice after the second time they repaired it. CA said that I cannot expect a refund since they are prepared to keep on repairing it!!

I simply cannot and will not be able to ever use this machine. I cannot sell it incase the same fault happens to the buyer (which I am now getting confident that it will).

When, then, does the law meet what appears to be an inherent engineering fault and what do I do?

Many thanks in advance for your advice.

Joe

Vermin: Brilliant graphic. How can I get a copy of this that will work in an email that I want to send to Natasha at Easy Computers and Angela at Acer UK? I have copied and pasted it but only get a still-frame of it.

Thanks again for your fun-filled support.

Right click, then Save picture as ...

You'll need to be able to specify an image source to include it in an e-mail. This may work from your hard drive (as with CR4), or you may need to upload it to 'somewhere', and insert a link to it.

There have been other threads about this - too tired to search at present.

Will try to sort it tomorrow (if no-one else has kindly saved me the effort).

Didn't get very far with that. Copied the source but not sure that works.

I think if you right-click on it, you'll get a menu. Select "Save Picture As..." and save it to your computer. When it's viewed as a picture to represent the file, it will stand still, but if you double-click it, Windows should open it and it should move.

Is you system settings such that active content is permitted to run? (Do other moving things move?)

Yes they do move and I think I have sorted it now by copying it to my URL to try it out. Thanks for your interest.

Are you saving it into the My Pictures folder? If yes, when you open the folder and look at your picture files, which show images of the actual pictures, animated gifs are displayed as stills.

However, if you double-click an animated gif file, it will open within a preview window and you will see the animation.

For example, here I have saved it to My Pictures, and it doesn't move...

But if I double-click on it in the My Pictures window, it gets opened in a preview window, where it moves...

While YOU can't see it moving in my screen capture, rest assured it is moving. Try it.

Hello Vermin

It seems to depend on which program is used to open the file (which is your default?)

The following are what happens with each program selected to Open files:

1. Microsoft Office Picture Manager = a still picture.

2. Windows Paint = a still picture.

3. Quicktime Player = a video screen that I have to click first for it to work, then it runs very quickly and stops.

4. Windows Movie Maker = still picture on video player that will not play.

5. Internet Explorer = IE background with the animated picture running properly.

6. GOM Player = opens in a video window already playing properly.

Interested if there is a program I should be using.

If you look at the top of the screen, you can see it says "Window Picture and Fax Viewer." That just comes up automatically when I double-click the file.

If you try opening the file in Adobe Photoshop, you get a warning that basically says, If I open it, I'm going to convert it to a single image and kill the animation. So not all programs know what to do with an animated gif file.

Try writing an email, and then include the gif such that it appears in the body of the email -- don't just try dragging and dropping it, use the email's attachment thing to put it in. It should be animated.

One more thing, There's a small, free program out there called Microsoft Gif Animator. No only will it open the gif into it's various cells, but you can change the file and make animated files of your own

Vermin: You are a hero! Thanks so much for that.

I created a little video on Youtube yesterday using some animated graphics that I copied from the internet and pasted to a project on Windows Movie Maker (search for "All Religion is Extreme" from Victimlesscriminal, if you are at all interested). I will also use it on the website I have created for my wife who is a writer (again, see wunjopress if you have nothing better to do).

I will now have a go with making/adapting my own gifs, thanks to you.

Best wishes and let me know if ever I can do anything to help you.

Must just mention a company that does not put its customers in Europe (and I mean the UK too) through such problems as you had. Their name is Comag Satellite receivers sold under the name Silvercrest. cheap but good make.

I checked out someones sat receiver for them this morning, by unplugging one of mine and putting theirs in place, all OK.

Plugged my Comag receiver (2 1/2 years old) I bought from Lidl back in and its display does not work anymore! No idea why, power supply was fine, more I could not check out....

Rang them up (support is a normal telephone line, no extra costs!) here in Germany, got a really pleasant Engineer that spoke German, English and French (we had a bit of a laugh together in 3 languages!!).

I did not have the receipt, but that is OK as all I needed to do was copy the inside front page of the manual that gives the software version and send it back as they give the Lidl versions 3 years of guarantee!!! Normally in Germany only 2 years are given generally speaking!!!!! Its already on its way there.......

It receives all BBC & ITV sat stations perfectly from Astra 28 E....when its working of course!!

I have heard of Silvercrest and must say that it is wonderful to hear of this level of service without the need for elbow on the counter diplomacy!

Thanks again for your help and support.

laptop inherent engineering faults meet the law

Sounds a little nasty ...and possibly illegal.
