How do you Procrastinate, if at all?

05/16/2008 8:00 AM

Following up on yesterday's thread about solitaire a prime procrastination tool. I found this article detailing how different professions procrastinate to be pretty funny and enlightening.

Oh and it's also a good way to procrastinate!

When I have a job that needs doing and I really don't want to do, I procrastinate by going to CR4 and looking for a question I can answer, or so maybe give someone a heads up on a problem.

This reminds me, I need to look up the local chapter of the Procrastinator's Club. That is, if anyone has gotten around to forming one...

I will stop procrastinating next month.

Actually it is the African motto - Never do today what you can put off until tomorrow.

Procrastination can actually be a very effective time-management tool, IF you don't take it too far.

Generally, about 50% of the requests I receive either genuinely 'go away' (no loss of business, just that the request was not really needed), or they change so significantly that to have done the original task would have been a waste of resources.

Strange but true,

(From the outset, I do apologize to those of Italian origin: on item 2 below)

1.Procrastination is the art form of : work-cum responsability avoidance . This science is widely and diversely complemented . Sometimes , it is couched or added to , by a : CYA response or clauses ("Cover your a..s clause.- Widely used in Governments or large Corporations)

2.The Italians have a saying roughly going like :

" qui va pianne va san, qui va san va lente."

The better and /or far more expert Italian procastinators add this clincher :

"qui va la forte va la morte "

Care to translate your Italian quote? Using a couple free on-line translators did nothing to produce understanding.

Thanks for your request.

The quote is from Construction workers on various sites I worked on. I am not able to garantee that it is : good Italian , but I do know that it is common among Italian workers. I will try and obtain an accurate translation for you .

Roughly I believe it translates as : Who goes slow goes gently, who goes gently goes slower it is used in a sense that : Why go fast when it is so easy to go : lazily. The clincher is generally added for any one who wants to ; hurry them to work. Which translates as :" Yea ! who works very hard goes dead ! "

Not knowing Italian do not hold me to the orthograph I have related it as I heard it quite a number of times.

Re: How do you Procrastinate, if at all?

Procastination comes when my priorities are not ordered.

But looking critically at it; you do something less important over and above something more important but something is done.

I go through CR4, where either by contributing to or viewing a discussion, my knowledge is enriched and can apply it my work which was abandoned for the period I was on CR4.

Procrastination sure, is priority dependent. Someone else's plan could be viewed as procrastination by someone else and so on and ...

Can you bit the comment by the CIA agent in that article?

cheers,

ethobil

I scrolled down to E in the list (for "engineer") and found only "Exotic Dancer." I read that entry (to waste time) and found that it fits pretty well. I find if I "conversate" and "be friendly and fun and all that crap" my work goes better.

Can I suggest one looks up what might be considered as homonymous to : procrastinate ( I have not yet done so ) but I would submit :

confabulate

After all, the essence of procrastination is to find orally as well as well as in writing a very strong argument against : action or inaction . Perhaps : Manana

I like the old joke ...
A man is trying to explain 'Manana' to an Irishman.

Eventually the Irishman smiles and nods..

'Ah, to be be sure, we have a word for that...
but it doesn't have the same sense of urgency'

I have traits like untidiness and procrastination that I would like to alter.

About 20 years ago I was at a book fair in Manchester when I saw, on a stand, a book called, I'm fairly sure, 'Stop procrastinating NOW', which I was very interested in, but when I went back to get it, it had gone.

No offence is meant by the following comments.Perhaps someone is procrastinating or may be all of us are.

As many of you have noticed there is a quest from : CR4 itself, about input on : how to build a rocket or rocket launcher. I have noticed it has been there for some time.

Is it resting in the "TOO-HARD IN -TRAY " ? or , in a state of : rocket accelerated somnolence, or ,

to be sure , in the Irish "lesser urgent " one ? circa: Del Cat , good one , with thanks.

Oh! that's right.............................when I was a kid we used to use milk bottles to let sky rockets off!!!!

For those not in the know

This was a glass milk bottle.........it used to come filled with real milk..............not this watered down crud that comes in cardboard cartons and plastic bottles.

and

the old horse drawn milk cart

Note the churn in the back of the cart..............used to take the billy can out and get "x" pints of rich creamy milk and put it in the ice chest no fridges then)

the large ice block went into the top space and the food underneath.

What would be the proper grammatical antisithesis of procrastinate? Whould it be Decrastinate?...Acrastinate?...Concrastinate? Please advise. That is, whenever you get around to it (tuit).

Re: How do you Procrastinate, if at all?

Oddly enough, I can find no antonyms for procrastinate in any thesaurus. (Don't worry, I am using this exercise as an excuse to put off doing some real work.)

If there are no antonyms, there are only two solutions: 1) use a grammatical construction or 2) make up a word.

The grammatical construction would be something simple, like "do it now," or "do it at the appropriate time. "I didn't procrastinate, I did it at 4 P.M. as you asked."

However, it would be much more fun to make up a word. The "pro" in procrastinate means "forward." "Crastinate" comes from crastinus, meaning "of tomorrow" (cras is Latin for "tomorrow"). So we could start with the Latin word "hodiernus" or "of today." Since we are "doing it now," no prefix to indicate future or past instance is required. That would give us "hodiernate." "Did you manage to finish the project?" "Yes, I did. I hodiernated and turned it in on time."

For those of us who wish to be more specific, we could use the word "nunc," which means "now, at the present time." To "nuncate" would be to do it right now. "Can you help me with this job?" "Sorry, I have to nuncate this other project."

Unfortunatley, I am not sure how these would work in the past tense. Since both include the concept of present time, how could you say "I hodiernated yesterday?' That would be like saying "I did it today but yesterday." Could we stretch the concept of present time to mean a specific point in time, and be current or present to that time?

Well, turning Latin adjectives into English verbs doesn't always work well, I guess. But the Romans often included the concept of "to do" into other verbs, so I am not sure how we could incorporate a generic (facio, or effecio) into one of these words. As ungainly as "hodiernate" is, "fachodiernate" is even worse! And "effecinuncate?" Spare me, please. To paraphrase Brutus, "Sic semper delirationis!"

Ok, I'm done. I really have to stop procrastinating and get back to work. It's almost quitting time.

I have to admit that your post is throroughly informative. You have succeeded in re-opening the wounds of my latin learning. In so doing this is what I suggest to you,

The Latin adjective for : calm is : sedatus , in fact also the past participe. It can also mean to calm , settle i.e. in the sense of : sedere or to sit down .

From the above you could build a word as the anti-thesis of action would be the soporific inaction generally found in : procrastination.

Obvioulsy you have the : ability . After voting a good answer to your post , I studiously await your learned conclusion.

Best regards,

Labor Omnia Vincit.

NB Perhaps " sederate " ? Could that illustrate a " fast sitting down action " ? No I leave it to you and all the learned CR4 procrastinators.

Around here, if I used the words "hodiernate" or "nuncate", people would say "Did it hurt?" or "Did you remember to wipe?"
