Gut superbug causing more illnesses, deaths

05/28/2008 5:54 PM

<"ATLANTA (AP) - 5/28/2008 10:55:00 AM - http://www.onenewsnow.com/Headlines/Default.aspx?id=125536

A dangerous intestinal superbug is putting people in the hospital by the thousands.

A new study says the number of people hospitalized with C-diff, as the infection is known, has been growing by more than 10,000 cases a year.

The germ, which is resistant to some antibiotics, played a role in nearly 300,000 hospitalizations in 2005, more than double the number in 2000.

The infection is found in the colon and can cause diarrhea and a more serious intestinal condition known as colitis. It is spread by spores in feces.

The study, being published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, says 2.3 percent of the cases in 2004 were fatal. That's nearly double the percentage of C-diff-related cases that ended in death in 2000.">

The big problem with over-usage of antibiotics, is that the only organisms which survive, have no normal competition from others of their type, and thus become aggressive colonizers.

Antibiotics are given as a way of life to chickens, sheep and cattle.

The antibiotics we eat via meat and milk, in our everyday life, are not really doing us a favour.

Superbugs are becoming more and more common, and we are going to have to stop giving general doses of antibiotics to our animals, otherwise a simple new strain may carry off millions of us.

Kind Regards....

The incentive to insure that every animal is preserved til slaughter at height of health is strong amoung the farmers, herders, and it is up to Veterinarians to recognize they are involved with the food chain.

I suggest Veterinarians ask themselves what drugs they want in their meat, and not prescribe for animals they, or their family might eat, drugs that diminish the value of the food, in the long run.

Since we eat food that comes from all over the world international standards are called for. Veterinarians give drugs (Antibiotics) to animals, and really ought not give them drugs that doctors of humans like us, recognize as counter to our longterm heath interests.

A food animal and a pet animal are two different animals.

I do think it has been awhile since doctors for humans routinely prescribed antibiotics for colds, as they did, for a good while.

They unfortunately have not given me valium to help my smoking habit.

Chantix was useful only for vivid dreams that were coherent in my case, and valium is the only drug I've ever had that diminished my desire to smoke.

The trouble is you can't raise cattle on corn without antibiotics. Tain't natural for them to eat it and they get right sick.

1st Item general knowledge in farming- veterinarians aren't called in for antibiotics- only serious surgery. Most farmers are well educated today and even do their own invetro fertilization now ( cattle) let alone perscribe antibiotics.

In the US C-Diff is very rampant in the hospitals and is contracted in the hospitals. Seems to be a hospital sterilization problem not food ( statement of opinion based on several elderly family members getting C-Diff after surgeries and at nursing homes during rehab 1 died from it). Normal antibiotics are not curing this new C-Diff strain. Has been around about 3 years now. I would like to hear more about this as we are seeing more intestinal problems that are not being cured and going on long-term no mater what life changes are being made or drugs being given.

You're right on the money with your comment about hospitals being the source due to poor sterilization and safe cleaning practices. Most hospitals in the US are run like a business for profit which means sometimes they cut corners and run wards on a skeleton crew. I'd say C-Diff is directly related to cutting cormers for higher profit.

Honestly, I think there is a lot of cutting corners going on, BUT the one thing that the world of medicine needs to do is to stop prescribing antibiotics so often... Go to the dr with a cough and they might say that you have an inflammation of something or other and give you a piece of paper to go down to the local drug store to buy the meds he/she feels will help you to get better. What about taking better care of ourselves? Less stress, more rest, etc., etc.

The one thing that I learned many years ago was WASH YOUR HANDS often and before you stuff your face, after handling money (bills and change alike are NASTY and full of the germs that were on the hands of the person that handled the currency last... Hmmmmmmm where were their hands before paying for there groceries? Or even at a restaurant? Did they wash their hands after getting up off of the toilet, or finishing up at the urinal?) Next time you go out keep an eye out when you are washing your hands, there are loads of people that do not do this lil' ol' bit of cleansing. On that thought, why do some bathrooms not have paper towels available, instead offering a dryer that blows hot air onto your hands? What about all of the germs and bacteria on the door h andle from those individuals who didn't wash their mitts? I understand the save trees the trees aspect but what about OUR health?

I have friends that go so far as to not use hand soap and dish soap that is anti bacterial.

I have also heard that kids in "developed" countries are more likely to get sick than kids in "poorer" countries; because, of the little fact that kids in devloped countries don't play in the dirt as much as their counterparts. They, instead sit in front of the boobtube playing videogames or watching cable, or heaven forbid, sit in front of the pc monitor chatting, playing, myspacing, facebooking, hi5ing and all the other stuff that kids didn't have even 10 years ago.

Cheers
