AC / DC Transformer

06/02/2008 2:15 AM

I plugged a 9 volt AC transformer into my Roland drum Pad> It needs a 9 Volt DC.

It lit up then crashed never to drum again.

Can anybody suggest how I can repair it

Component by component. The on-board power supply needs dissection until the failed components have all been replaced.

Can the dealership where it was purchased arrange this repair?

I think the cost of repair may exceed the value of the instrument

I dismantled it completely and there was no sign of overheatig or damaged components. Also I could not find a fuse.

You neednt repair it, it alway was poured by resin. very difficulty to open.

besides, its very cheap. only 1 or 2 usd. buy new one.

suggest you check your electronic drum at first to see fi there is something wrong with it.

So you plugged a 9 volt ac power source into your instrument which requires 9 volt dc?

Plonker! You have almost certainly damaged your Roland instrument.

*sigh* Goes out and bangs head against brick wall

That is exactly what I did. But I cannot recommend it.

Plonker is a polite word for the piece of equipment that boy dogs have and girl dogs don't have

He probably means 'Bollocks'!

But in any case it wasn't a smart thing to do he did but things like this can happen to anybody. Still it is a suprise because most modern electronics is internally diode protected, I thought.

As far as I am aware, diode protection was taken out to increase chip speeds many years ago.....its only from memory, so I could be wrong.

The diodes were only on the gates anyway, the power connections were not diode protected I believe and that is what got killed when AC was placed on them....!!!

In grade 3 of elementary school I plugged a 12V dc adapter into an apple...the teacher said that it was dangerous. Thinking that the big blocky thing that plugged into the wall make it more dangerous I cut a normal ac wire off an old radio and stuck it into the wall and then into the apple...shall we say, 'applesauce'?

But have you repeated this mistake since? May I venture to say NO you have not!!!

And it could become a party trick to show unbelievers a new way to make apple sauce!!!!

I am not sure which model you have. You should start here at Roland Support. Ask for help, a schematic, or what components would be damaged with a reverse voltage of 13V (9V rms X 1.414)

GA. The people that built it so inexpensively that it would fail from a simple error should be familiar with correcting this problem. As a suggestion for the future . I have learned that as soon as a power supply crosses the threshold of my house, I need to mark it's use on it with a permanent paint marker. I have three grown daughters and a wife that do not agree with me on this, till the power supply is missing from something. Another possible place to look for relief is the used music equipment section of the newspaper or the local music store. People upgrading to something often look to recoup some money by selling off the old. Good luck.

Re: AC / DC Transformer

I cannot believe! If You dont know the difference between AC and DC, then You should not do it, and common sense should have told You that there IS difference, else nobody would bother to write DC if it could be AC or DC regardless !

Unfortunately Your device is quite dead, so dont bother even to try to repair it.......

Next time replace Power Supply unit ONLY with originall from same factory!

You cannot find trace of burning because You did not give too much electricity, yet You ireversibly damaged all transistors, and all other electronic components that are sensitive to direction of electric current flow......

There is no fuse as everybody assume that with correct PS You cannot overload anything, and transformer unit would protect device from spikes in voltage........

Still, it is recomended that any electronic device SHOULD be protected from high voltage spikes as even transformers could be damaged when lightning strike power lines.....

GA

I agree completely, all chips and transistors will be blown. Nothing to see visually, but all dead!!! Buy a new one!!!

The good point is that he knows now and will never do such a stupid thing again.

Strangely enough for those with no knowledge of Electronics (but do not please try it out!) the opposite usually does not harm anything, that is a DC supply into an AC device of the same voltage!!!!

It might not be so bad that everything is dead if there were protection diodes in the circuit. But I can make a prediction that it won't be repaired without professional help....

Hear, hear. Let's hope there was a protection diode, perhaps a zener crowbarred across the input, that when forward biased, just blew the fuse. Oh, you mean the cheap b@$t@rds couldn't put in $0.20 of parts to protect it?

Quite frankly I did not know that such a thing as a 9 volt AC adaptor was made.

I thought all adaptors were DC

I looked for positive and negative and was surprised it was not marked and assumed it was universal

Should it not be called a transformer

A little knowledge can do a lot of damage

Should it not be called a piece of crap? How proud of your product if you will not even write your name on the product and it's power supply? I am sorry for your loss. I have many left over power supplies, And about once a year I have to go through them to replace the "missing one". Good luck.

There should have been a label on the thing that said what the input and output were. But there are no standards regarding the type of plug / jack for this type of thing. At least not that I am aware of.

It's so bad that I've started labeling the *$)@_&*^ wall warts so that I know which gizmo they go to.

Have you tried a 9vdc supply since the crash? Your instrument may have not been damaged at all, it may have just took out the ac supply. Be sure to observe the polarity of the dc supply.
