Our orginal problem was that the generator breaker would trip offline but wouldnt secure the engine, long story short we swapped out the govenor and we couldnt get the gen. to start without lifting the governor arm and holding it in place. We swapped the gov. out again w/ another spare and the same issue. We tried to put the orginal gov. on and same issue. Here is what we have done so far. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
- On Sunday, 1 Jun, the #2 SSDG Switch Board breaker tripped off line, however the engine stayed running. We do not know the reason the breaker tripped.
- Engine appeared fine and switch board appeared fine. Tripped EG breaker and had #2 SSDG do a dead bus pick up. Engine responded fine and had no problem holding load.
- During resets, re-energized engine room supply fans. As fans were energized, frequency meter pegged below 58 Hz and then over shot to about 62 Hz before lowering back to 60 Hz.
- Paralleled #1 & #2 SSDG for night. No problems observed with maintaining load.
- Monday morning, EMs checked cables and connections for proper operation and loose wires. Found a couple loose wires and tightened. Ensured all governor controls were receiving and sending proper signals, no problems found.
- Singled up on #2 SSDG, with governor in electric mode. Stopped and started engine room fans, observed same behavior in frequency as night before.
- Paralleled #1 & #2 SSDG and repeated fan test. #2 SSDG and no frequency fluctuations.
- Repeated same test singled up with #1 SSDG with no frequency fluctuations.
- Singled back up on #2 SSDG & placed governor in mechanical mode. Repeated fan test, observed same behavior in frequency as Sunday night. The frequency dropped below 58 Hz, then overshot to above 62 Hz and then worked way back to 60 Hz.
- Because engine responded the same way in electrical and mechanical governor control, it was felt that the governor might be bad.
- Back round info... #2 SSDG just completed a center section overhaul on 25 April. Sent both #1 & #2 SSDG governors out to Sea Cost Fuel Injection (local company in Maine) for overhaul. No issues with #1 SSDG. Got u/w on May 18th and had no issues with #2 SSDG until 1 Jun.
- Pulled spare governor from stores & installed.
- Attempted to start #2 SSDG. Engine would not start. Air starter would spin engine up, but no fuel was being supplied.
- When started, governor actuator would not move the fuel linkage. Same situation in electrical or mechanical control.
- If you manually raised fuel linkage, engine would start, but as soon as you let go of fuel linkage, it would go back to min fuel setting.
- Thought governor could be bad, installed second spare governor with same results.
- Went back and installed original governor, same results happened as with spare governors.
- Disconnected fuel linkage from governor actuator. Started engine by manually holding fuel linkage. Governor actuator would eventually start to move after 3-4 seconds of engine coming up to speed.
- Broke oil supply line to governor and started engine. Appears to be sufficient oil flow to governor.
- Resealed oil connection at governor to ensure no air was being sucked in.
- It appears that the engine wants to start, but no fuel is being provided at start because the governor actuator appears to not be able to lift the fuel linkage. However, all electrical connections appear to be operating properly and the governor appears to have a sufficient oil supply.
