Social Engineering

06/04/2008 6:37 PM

In the forum discussion "Re: Spending on Space, Worth it?" a somewhat off-topic exchange between Anonymous Hero and Roger Pink reminded me of a dream I had several years ago so I decided to post it here.

The Fishbowl

The other night I dreamed I saw a fishbowl. There were four kinds of fish in this bowl, one of which was very aggressive and hungry. The water in the bowl was, however, extremely dirty, so as to make it dark as night. This condition gave the other fish a relative measure of safety.

I found myself to be suddenly inside the bowl, acting one after another as a member of the other three groups. At this point the fish were people.

The first group acted as a band to increase their defense against the aggressors. To do this, however, they relinquished their independence and accepted leadership from one of their fellows.

The second group was composed of those that were more independent minded and it was pretty much every man for him self. Their security was much more in doubt, however, and their numbers were consequently diminished, though they tended to be more defensively aggressive than the others. They were, individually, just no match for the aggressor.

The last group was made of those that just tried to hide from the aggressor, having neither the courage of the independants nor the relative security of the band.

At the last I found myself back outside the fishbowl. I discovered three new groups there. These were trying to influence events inside the bowl.

The first I saw were those that put in a stick and stirred everything up. These had no empathy for the fish but thought they might gain some advantage or power by pitting one against another. Some of it, perhaps, was just for the sport of it.

The second were those that sympathized with the participants in the bowl but had no true vision of what was going on there. These went about trying to find the right recipe to give them that vision. They had no success, however, as they didn't know where to look.

The last group, alas, having found the vision, had gone off to another place to deal with another fishbowl.

I awoke with the feeling that it was a shame there was no one to take charge of this fishbowl.

There should be another group in your fishbowl, that attempts to insure their own safety by herding other victims into the path of the aggressor, thinking the aggressor will reward them with his protection. Unfortunately, when the aggressor runs out of other easy prey, he will eat his helpers...

Absolutely true and I am sure there are other groups as well. Just reporting what I saw, however.

The last group to dive in were the lawyers, er, I mean, sharks!

No, I think they are probably more closely related to that first group. You know, the hungry agressive ones.

Actually, I was only joking, but the lawyers are almost always last to to arrive on the scene.

Your dream is an interesting dream, indeed. Since you seem to recall it so vividly I might suggest you take some time and learn more about the meaning of dreams and what this dream specifically is trying to tell you from your subconscious. I think you would find it both fun and and enlightening. There are many good books on the subject at your library.

Here is a question for you. Who do you think the aggressors were in the fish bowl? Who do they represent in your life? Could they be some one you know? Could they be a facet of yourself?

Those are good questions. I find that I have three main types of dreams - drivel, nonsense and enlightenment. Every once in a while I have a dream that seems to come from 'out there', that is, from other than my own personality. They contain scenes from places I haven't been but later see, people I haven't met but later meet or see, and in circumstances I can't comprehend at the time but which become clear with time. The frustrating thing is to watch these things unfold and not have any hand in them or power to change or even pick up the pieces after. I suppose you might call it 'enhanced de'ja vue'.

I have a comentary on the dream in question here but it is religious in nature. If you would like to read it, let me know and I will post it to your mailbox.

Interesting. When I dream I have the ability to change the dream at will. I am aware that I am dreaming and if I don't like the dream, I can and have changed it to what I want. It is called lucid dreaming.

However, many times dreams are iconic and the aspects of the dreams have much deeper inferences than what they appear on the surface. My thought is that the dream you described is just such a dream.

Many elements from dreams come from things you have heard, seen, or felt, but consciously forgot or never registered from your past. These artifacts surface and when you later confront the same scene or sensation in reality you swear your dream was a prediction of the future, but it was just memories that have been dormant.

I too have that ability. It started when I was in my early teens. One night in the midst of a nightmare I realized I could turn around and chase the boogyman back. When I did he turned into something like a frightened little puppy.

When these other dreams come I have no control over them. That is why I think they come from outside of me.

Hi, Shadetree!

My family got really enthused about a greeting card we saw last year, and adopted its theme as our family's private motto, just adding some latin and our own artwork version to make the thing official.

It may help you with this dream:

Mark
