Heat Exchanger Design

Can anyone provide me complete manual calculation steps involved in designing and cost calculations of Shell-Tube Heat Exchanger and Plate Heat Exchanger and their softwares.

thats quite extensive,

I have design and written programs for shell and tube sizing, for both cooling and heating in excel, the problem I had is the iterations in excel, due to the fact that I had to solve a number of variables simultaneously, and these variables effected each other. I actually had to do it the long way around.

And its not that simple there is software out there and if you do want to do it there are also books too, so you are familiar with the structure and whats happening.

And then you determined what your need is and what would be relevant to this program.

In may case I looked at it as a educated guess, and took what I feel might make an impact, and based on the feed back. it was correct. The time I spent to get it to work initially was approx 100+ hours, and than added an extra 150-250 hours to clean it up, (used friendly, output information that the customer required and such) as well as refining it.

There are shareware programs out there, I may have pick up a few. I'll look, if it isn't shareware, I'll give you the website to purchase. I'll need you email address.

In my case I could not use it due to the customized HX's.

Hi , Is it possible to design a heat exchanger that can withstand the temperature of 1500 centigrade of more ? What are the temperature constraint that needed to be take account of ? Assume I have hot syngas and I want to remove the heat by producing steam .

Dear Mr.RichardCen,

I am afraid, to with stand the temp of 1500 Deg.C and above, the METALLURGY part of the material will pose serious problems. Safe Guards and Controls, for Malfunctioning/Faulty Operation also pose serious problem.

Let us wait for other CR4 Members Response.

Heat Transfer is a very Big or Large Subject having so many combinations like

1. Medium to be heated and its character like Sp.Heat, Viscosity, Pressure/Vac, Temp.Rise desired, Corrossion Character, Fouling Factor/Character etc.

2. Heating Medium and its character like Sp.Heat, Viscosity, Pressure/Vac, Temp.Drop desired, Corrossion Character, Fouling Factor/Character If steam/Vapour is to be used, its Heat Transfer character is different, whether full condensation is desired or part condensation is desired - and Noxious Gas Removal, Condensate Film Effect and Condensate With Removal will come in to picture.

3. Material of the Tube and its Thermal Conductivity, Corrossion aspect of the Material

4. What is the APPROACH TEMP desired - This will have IMPACT ON THE COST, Narrower the approach temp. Higher the COST involved.

5. LOG MEAN TEMP. Difference Desired.

6. Insulation for reducing Heat Loss, and agin cost is involved, and still LOT MORE.
