Are You Computer Savvy?

07/28/2008 9:19 AM

Can you solve the seemingly impossible test linked to at:

Test For Second Grade Chinese Students

This appears so simple at first glance.

Since when have frogs been incapable of turning and hopping back the other way?

What a great puzzle! It took me several tries before I got it right. Guess I flunked Grade 2.

Ahh, Boy.. < scratching head whilst orange powder collects on floor >, I guess I'm not thinking outside the lillypad. I tried for 5 minutes and can't do it. Then again I'm thick, (as a brick).

Ohhhhhhhhhh noooooooo this is like the Towers of Hanoi puzzle...

Now the first thing to understand is WHY do the frogs want, nay desire, to go to the other end...?

Once we can understand the motivation we can solve the puzzle!!

John.

I have seen this one before. There are actually only a few possible frog movement sequences. The trick (if you cannot picture it visually immediately) is to quickly try a couple of times and fail, then the solution will come to you.

I think this is a test of mental learning and adaptability, where you have as many tries as you want in 2 minutes, build your understanding of how the puzzle works, and then solve. If you don't adapt and learn you keep on making the same mistakes over and over and never see the answer and solve the puzzle.

A few sequences? I found only two, each with 15 moves. One is the reverse of the other, i.e. one starts with the green frog...the other starts with the brown frog. Are there more sequences?

That is interesting! But who says it was for Chinese students? I don't know about the Parabéns!, but the rest of it is Spanish or possibly Portugese.

Maybe it's really a Second grade Chinese Students test...

But I've seen it before and as previously posted the language is a mixture of Spanish-Portuguese (Parabens = Congratulations)

As already said too there are just 15 moves to solve it in either direction.

Let's number the frogs green G1, G2 and G3 and the other B1, B2, B3.

The initial position is G3_G2_G1_B1_B2_B3.

The movements are: G1, B1, B2, G1, G2, G3, B1, B2, B3, G1, G2, G3, B2, B3 and G3.

Cheers

Easy! Just a simplified version of Chinese checkers, really. Any second grader, and most first graders (except in U.S.) stumped by it had better plan on not making it to University.

Sorry Stan. Seemingly impossible??

Why don't you post your name and take credit for your outlandish statement...you churlish knave! I dare you to!

I'll be a bit kinder than ba/ael (even though I agree with him), but NO it is NOT a 'simplified version of Chinese checkers'. In CC, when you jump a marble, that marble is removed, leaving a place for the next jump.

In this game, the frog stays after jumping. That requires a totally different technique.

Sure, it's easy if you already know how! I'd be VERY interested to see what percentage of 2nd graders of any country could solve it...

All second grade dogs can solve it. Although, I believe they're 49 years old by the second grade.

Re: Are You Computer Savvy? Or just twit phobic?

07/30/2008 10:15 PM

Since ba/ael is given to such outbursts, it is easy enough to let it slide. By "simplified," it was to be understood that in addition to movements in only one direction, there is only on path . . . no avoidances. Perhaps backgammon might have been a more adroit comparison; but that's not "Chinese," as in popular Chinese (and American) child's game. The point that was seemingly (that word again!) lost is that "seemingly" impossible was what I deemed to be an overstatement, even as regards children. (And what learning benefit would come from presenting 2nd graders with an impossible "fun and games" task?)

Similarly, other than developing an ability to look ahead, the connection between Chinese checkers and computer savvy is a tenuous one at best. As I said, and still assert, facile clicking (and patient, goal oriented clicking) is one clear (and fun) beginning training benefit to be derived from the game by primary grade pupils.

Present company excepted, I do wish (some of) you CR people would learn to be a bit more broad minded, as well as a bit less quick on the trigger.

Re: Are You Computer Savvy? Or just twit phobic?

Ordinarily, I am not given to such outbursts. My problem is that you adopted a criticizing "know-it-all" attitude to a CR4 member without revealing your name. You still have not revealed your name. I have no problem with guests stating their views but when their views criticize a CR4 member, I believe they owe it to everyone to stand up and be counted. To do otherwise is cowardly.

Now I believe that if Stirling Stan were to respond to your earlier comment he might have said something like "the OP was worded as it was to create and attract interest. Sure, it may be relatively simple but the first try or two can be frustrating if you aren't a puzzle solving genius".

Speaking for myself, I tried the puzzle several times. At one point, I was successful, however on the next attempt, I forgot the successful strategy. Now if you want to make something out of that, that is your prerogative.

I found the puzzle to be fun and thought provoking. I considered it worth bookmarking (and that is what I did) in order to show it to my great grandchildren in a couple of years when they are old enough to understand it. I could show it to my grandchildren, but they are pretty bright kids and would likely solve it even more quickly than our brilliant anonymous "Guest".

Thanks Bruce. And that was much more constructive, describing how it might take a few miss-steps to unravel the little teaser. Your misguided justifications for previous rudeness in response to what was neither rude nor inappropriate is duly considered, and again overlooked. Certainly I was not the only one who made the connection between frog jumping and checkers upon first playing the game. So there was no reason to see my mentioning it as being haughty. I don't think describing the game as easy was out of line either, if it encouraged anyone to try again to convince themselves they can succeed at it. This would certainly be the way to motivate small children . . . that rather than burdening them with unfair expectations--to surpass adults for the sake of your ego--as you suggest you will do with your children. By now, I am confident you have reconsidered that spiteful idea upon realizing how unpositively silly it would be--kind of like measuring one's importance by the performance of one's children at tic-tac-toe; no matter how many times they (or you or anyone) played, no one could claim to really be measurably better or smarter than anyone else. So let's get off this tit-for-tat and name calling stuff...it doesn't become you, and it's not where your debating stengths lie.

Regards,

UG

What does computer savvy have to do with it? Savvy enough to press with a finger? Playing marbles requires much more savvy. And greater innate programming skill.
