Do you want to know the capacity of an existing tank, or calculate the required capacity for operation?

If it is the arithmetic that has you stumped, you could enlist the services of any 4th grade child.

If you need to calculate the volume of an existing tank you would require detailed measurements. Filling with known volumes or a flow/volume meter will be better for irregular shaped tanks.

Sizing the tank would require the maximum consumption rate x the length of time required plus some allowance for additional fuel for aging etc.

The fuel consumption will vary in relation to the load. An exact estimate can be made but unless you have a space problem it will always be better to have some reserve capacity available.

An allowance also needs to be made for the vagiaries of the fuel delivery services and transport difficulties.

A water pumping station in the UK with a standby diesel generator set of 50kVA would have, typically, a fuel tank of 1500L upwards. Then, the electricity supply is generally good here, with minimal interruptions. Were the tank to be located in South Africa, for example, then given the reported level of electricity interruptions, it may well need to be bigger so as to provide uninterrupted service.

Assuming the generator require to run 24 hours, non-stop for 10 days.

The D G Set's fuel tank consumption (capacity) calculation:
Fuel consumption at 100% load X 24 hours X 10 days = Fuel Capacity Tank

Hope that would help :)
