Does anyone have experience with semiconductor and MEMS gyroscopes?

08/04/2008 10:56 AM

Hello Friends,

I'm about to start a project involving semiconductor and/or MEMS gyroscopes. Unfortunately the only information I can find is from companies like Analog Devices, but that's only on the device itself, not how to use it. Can any one give me an idea on where I can find examples and such?

Thanks for your time.

http://www.mems.sandia.gov/

Try this site. They are quite active in mems research. They give away lots of info to universities and have a close partnership with Central New Mexico Community College.

Hi,

it would be very useful to know the planned application for this "gyro".

The acceptable drift rates (either non-zeroed components short term after switch on or rms broadband noise or else) vary between 10°/s for simple sensors to 0.01°/h for navigation grade sensors.

This is 6.5 orders of magnitude so everybody shall define first: what do I need.

Second: read everything of what is available at www.uspto.gov - this may take 4 months or more so if in a hurry then refrain to the 10% estimated most important.

Read some books and conference proceedings if you really want to come out of this as an informed and educated engineer.

If you do not like this then get your information from the vendors and stay with their arguments.

May be higher management is content with this small scale involvement.

I would first hit up Analog Devices for any Application Notes they might have on their product. You might be able to down load them from their web page... or E-mail them and ask for sources that might help you.
