Round Pipes vs. Square Tubes

08/22/2008 2:57 PM

why we are using pipes to flow liquid

why not square tube

what is reason behind that

please inform me

Round tubes are cheaper to manufacture and because square tubes are hard to thread?

For both square and round, write down the ratio of perimeter to area. Compare.

Then consider trying to thread a square tube or machining a square flange.

in geometric tolerancing one has about 21% more area in a square than a circle.

  1. A round pipe has the minimum surface area exposed (maximum flow for surface area) to the water so there is less drag on the water at it flows down the pipe (i.e. less friction) - so you need less energy to pump the water, or conversely you will drain a higher flowrate under gravity
  2. Pipes are round because circles are the most efficient shape when handling pressure. When water is flowing through the pipe, there is an internal pressure. With a circular shape, the pressure force is evenly distributed around the entire circumference of the pipe. With squares, triangles, or any other shape with sharp corners, the pressure forces concentrate at these locations. Therefore, the edges or corners would have to be reinforced, adding weight to the pipe and increasing the complexity of manufacturing; pressures on a concave surface have less stress than on a flat surface (the square sides would need to be a lot thicker than the round pipe wall thickness)
  3. Square pipes would have crevices (folds) on the inside where the corners are. Bits of debris and minerals would build up in these crevices over time leading to corrosion problems, or slowing down the efficiency of the pipe and probably eventually blocking it.
  4. Lastly, easier fit up when building pipe and also rounds are easier to bend.

Dammit Guest,

A great answer and we don't know who gave it! Why, in the name of all that's holy, don't you register?

I am still giving you a GA, but if I ever see you here again, I won't, no matter how good of an answer you have!

hi mike

in your profile i have seen that you are also in control engineering

i am very much interested in that

also we have lot of problem in soap plant it is true that if we not measure we cannot control is there any good system for both to measure and control

because once i solve one problem another two are in front of me

please advice me what can i do to implement some good systems

Hi Sandeep,

If you can give me some specifics, I could give better advice.

What are you trying to control? Heating/cooling? Flow rates? Pressures?

Remember that, in order to have any type of control, you MUST have adequate measurement of what you are trying to control.

Giving a description of the soap making process would help a lot.

Oh yeah - I only started posing here in the last month or so and have gotten quite a few good answers.

It doesn't matter to me - I am only looking to help people out.

I would rather be anonymous with zero good answers, than having this looked like a contest.

Yes that's a good answer.

Now for the next question:

Why are eggs shaped the way they are?

It would certainly stand to reason that if they were rectangular they would be less likely to roll off counter top and break on the floor.

This may explain why chickens lay eggs the shape they are:-

Pictured here is the South African, Southern Crowned Crane...............it lays square eggs..............and every time it lays one you hear its very loud distinct call.............."ooooooooeeeeee..................ahhhh"

I believe to actually find one these square eggs, laid by the afore said bird is extremely difficult. This is because he instinctively knows that they are extremely rare and he is a master of deception as far as hiding his nest goes.

There have ever only been a couple found, consequently it is extremely difficult to actually find a photograph. Sorry that I cannot comply with your wishes sandeep.

However, as I said before, his woeful cry "ooooeeeeee......ahhhhhh" is often heard, when walking anywhere near his habitat.

Here's a couple ;

Curiously, I could find no examples of a square egg in it's shell. Possibly a little human intervention I think....

I think you will find that the Southern Crowned Crane lays its eggs on precipitous cliffs, rocky outcrops and crags, as well as being well concealed.

This is another reason why the eggs are square.............they will not roll off.

ooooooooeeeeeee.........ahhhhhhhhhh

It must be a trait evolved to keep them safe from the notorious drop-bears. The Crane is not alone in it's egg shape, here is a picture of the Fatu Liva (newly hatched);

and its nest ;

look at the ratio of wall (with friction) to volume.

e.g Compare perimeter vs area of circle, square etc... it should become obvious.

It is also much easier to make connectors and fittings for round pipe.

You can se what you want. But deal with all the problems from connection to static build up to corrusion and failures in the turns or corners.

All answers have good merits.

Let me add mine too...

For a said volume and pressure, sphere (hollow) requires less wall thickness, then circular section, then rectangular section and so on.

Since subject is pipe/tube, sphere is ruled out, the natural next is circuler/round...

OK in low pressure, high-flow applications for small projects .

Who supplies the fittings? Coupler,Tee,Cross,Union,Bend,Elbow?

Answer is NO ONE .

That's Why

Re: Round Pipes vs. Square Tubes

why we are using pipes to flow liquid

why not square tube

what is reason behind that

please inform me

round pipes are easy to clean while square tubes may clog liquids due to sharp bends on the edges. squre tubes has limits on wall thickness and can't handle liquids of high pressure because it is not manufactured for that purpose. for practical reasons also, square tubes are difficlt to install especially if you have many bends. squre tubes are limited on welded connections. you can't put thread on it.
