oil storage tanks

10/05/2008 8:02 AM
  • curently i m working on the project of construction of oil terminal having mutliple oil storage tank from 22Metric Ton to 30000Metric Ton. we are using for shell ASTM A-36 plates for D Door ( sludge door) do we need heat treatment of it before erection ?
  • except porosity, root under cut, hi-lo, pits formation are there any major more defects that are needed to be reapir during welding process. ?

Tank you ducon, you are welcome.

A. As noted from Table 2-3a—Material Groups of API 650, the material ASTM A36 is located under two columns:

Group I As Rolled, Semikilled (must be semikilled or killed & Thickness ≤ 20 mm).

Group II As Rolled, Killed or Semikilled (Manganese content shall be 0.80–1.2% by heat analysis for thicknesses greater than 20 mm, except that for each reduction of 0.01% below the specified carbon maximum, an increase of 0.06% manganese above the specified maximum will be permitted up to the maximum of 1.35%. Thicknesses ≤ 20 mm shall have a manganese content of 0.8–1.2% by heat analysis).

From above we discover that ther is no any recommendation for proceeding a heat treatment (normalizing) for ASTM A36 before erection. Only there is my recommendation to proceed a preheating before welding to avoid heat choking and to avoid formulation of H2 entrapped to your weldment.

B. There are a lot of weld defects, the following handbooks are free downloading and will be very interesting to you in that subject:

Welding Manual

Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (TIG) Handbook

Guidelines for Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW)

Guidelines for Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW)

Guidelines for Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW)

Submerged Arc Welding

Resistance Spot Welding

Stainless Steels - Their properties and their suitability for welding

Underwater Cutting and Welding Manual

Can I butt in -- with very brief replies?

#1 D Door ( sludge door) do we need heat treatment of it before erection

  • Tank Plate material is chosen for Good Welded strength ONLY.--
  • These plates are not hardenable-- in the sense of machined/grinded parts
  • So gaskets take care of possible non-parallelism.
  • Heat treatment will be pointless.
  • You can install a gate valve here instead.

#2 except porosity, root under cut, hi-lo, pits--Make sure -none of these happen.

#3 reapir during welding process__ Plan your Vertical weld with :

MIG-MAG /SAW/ELECTROSLAG so that you will never need repairs. Possible.
