Friday Teaser - What Does It Mean?

01/09/2009 2:12 AM

It is not as complicated as Bricktop's memorabilia and it is more a case of "What does it mean ?" rather than "What is it ?"

How Many Cars Can Go On Green ?

It is one of the many new motorway controlled on-ramps in Auckland.

For the non-pictorial, the facts are;

2 lanes of traffic,

4 sets of lights,

Sign display is "One Vehicle Per Green Each Lane".

I know what the traffic engineer intended,

I can guess what the policeman will say,

But if you are 2nd in the queue it can have another meaning

Any views ?

Good day,

Possibly in this case, two cars per lane?

It's refering to the Golf course a few miles up the road.
Any fat lazy gits can go round in their car...but only 1 car is allowed on the green at any time, I mean you don't want to turn the course into a parking lot.

If Ben Hogan was alive today he'd be turning in his grave.

4 greens. Is this the entrance to a golf course?

Do the 19th hole count as a green?

I agree with guest, there is only one lane after the green lights, and each car, one from each lane must proceed, alternating by giving way to the other lane in turn. I think , you never know in NZ. perhaps they are giving way to sheep?

The way I see it the sign means that when the light goes green only one vehicle per lane may pass. The next vehicle in each lane must stop and await the next green signal. It is very likely that the light is equipped with a sensor to turn the light back to red as soon as the '"one" car per lane has passed. At least that is how I would do it.

Love to see how it works out.We must depend upon the honor system otherwise.

Thats government for you with the price of fuel lets have them sit on an entrance ramp and wait for a light to burn more. Contaminate the city air some more.

So I don't see anything green about it.

Los Angeles, CA has similar lights. The intent is to improve traffic flow on the freeway. Without the lights, more cars would be held up longer.

At least, that's how it's supposed to work.

I would only guess can left & right traffic lights' sets work separately? Or would take place such an operating mode if needed? How long is separating white strip? It seems there had been imlied more flexible way for traffic control.

Not only the second in line, but all after him MUST wait for a NEW GREEN LIGHT. That means that if, after the first one passes, the light doesn't change (either to red or yellow or no light at all), nobody can move until the new green appears.

I find it to be a very effective way to de-congest the entrance into the highway (of coarse, if the people have enough civic conscience or if a policeman is standing by the light). And, please, no excuses that there was no light at all. You should have waited for the green light!

I think the second green is redundant. Maybe the highway department had a surplus of traffic signals and decided to double up on them.

I read it as 4 vehicles per time, one for each green. But I'm a literal, or so my ex wife tells me.

Hello AussieBob:,

It meant nothing to me until I read further down your first post. If you are coming up to green lights, it may be a clumsy way of saying "stay in your lane"?

I see it as saying there should be no more than one vehicle per lane waiting to go through the lights. Sometimes a bike or motorbike can sit by the side of a car and that is two vehicles using space meant for one.

I like these things, thanks...............

Have a happy new year................

Looking further at the photo, I see there is a notice below the top light. I think therefore you have three options, If they are all green you can proceed as normal, if they are all red then all traffic must stops, but if the top light is red and the bottom light green , then proceed one car at a time from each lane, merging into a single lane. Others have mentioned that they think this is a highway merging lane, so I imagine this would come into effect when highway traffic is heavy, or too many grazing sheep ahead, on 11.59m chains at the side of the road or on roundabouts?

Regards JD.

I like to think of this as a 'moron density filter'... Does someone who is more mathmatically inclined then I want to work up a formula to describe the increased profit potential from this set up? The extra lights cost a little more but the extra traffic citations are bound to more than make up for that.

They have the same here in Melb Australia.

Stupid things...

The upper lamp is to aid trucks to see the lights, the lower one for cars.

1 car per lane per green light (for that respective lane) how simpler can you make it.

The lights don't have car sensing, they are run on a timer, on for x-time, off for y-time, alternating between lanes. and operate at certain times of the day (peak hours)

Its "supposed" to assist in helping people merge on to the motorways (free/tollways) so your not getting multiple cars trying to merge into the overcrowded 1st side lane in the 1 hit.

If the road conditions are light, then the time to accelerate to the motorway speed is longer than the lane you have to merge onto that motorway, so your merging at 60km/h when the rest of the traffic is happily sitting on 100.

also, not everyone knows how to merge lanes, they usually slow down and just jump out instead of looking and balancing speed to match the lane they are entering, I have seen more than 1 car sitting stopped at the end of the merging onramp to try and merge into fast moving traffic... car in merging lane.. "don't you dare try to merge.. oh crap you did" lockup & horn, and the "merger" giving you the 1-finger salute.

Hello Snaketails:

I hope your explanation is correct! It seems to be the only one who has actually seen them in action. You have make it clearer to me at least, thank you.

Happy new year...............

Looks like city sanctioned drag racing to me. Staging lights would be nice though. And the sign seems to indicate that no more than 2 vehicles per race. I wonder how they handicap the different classes, though?

Hooker <-- the above is thoroughly tongue-in-cheek

We have these at most highway entrances in the Portland Oregon area. We only have one green light per lane. Most highway entrance have two lanes but ones and threes exist. They do help reduce highway congestion. Some of the lights here are run off of sensors on the highway to determine density of cars per unit of road and some are just on timers. The ones on timers turn on and off (off=not in service) at the same time 5 days a week. The ones that work on counting actual cars on the road sometimes turn on at weird times. Like last sunday at 11pm.

I don't recall ever seeing one where both lanes were green at the same time like the picture in the original post

Oh, yeh, you do get those type of dual lane green lights, but generally found in Drag strip race tracks ;o)

Hello AussieBob:

You thought you question was confusing?

How about this. I would love to see the junction from above!

Take care.....................

The junction wouldn't be a problem, imagine the worker who has to either change the bulbs, or fix it when someone runs into it
