Too many times...

01/11/2009 9:25 AM

I was wondering if there is/was a guidelines for posting? Too many times I see questions asking for such detailed information and there is little or no usable information given... This is irritating at best. Oh, then there's a few postings which could be borderline in their ramifications!

There are the "Tips for Posting" just above, but I highly doubt many people pay attention to it. Maybe have it on a separate page and then have the user click 'okay' to actually write their post...

"We" need as much information as possible to give answers to your questions. Also: "CR4 is not a troubleshooting your work online site."

People who can't seek out their own information aren't going to seek out the rules for how to post on CR4.

My advice is just to ignore and/or enjoy the chatter.

what? I have this problem you see, at my house and ,well it seems to be electrical and well maybe --- it is , maybe from the garden hose. you know what I mean? what do I do about that???

Something like that? I have also seen similar, and I agree it is annoying at best. I'm new to CR4 and like the info and my opportunity to help if I can but some of these questions are sorely lacking.

Ah, yes, I've had the same trouble.
It's those little thingys with the switches in the plastic box under the stairs with the big cable goin in, next to the pipes....or maybe it's the pipes.

You need to drill big random holes all around in that are until you get electrocuted/flooded/or it fixes it .

I think we should have a list of properly worked out questions available (for posters who really would like to ask a question but with nothing to ask) to choose from.

In addition we could have a model answer available for members to evaluate proper GA votes. A lazy poster could even copy and past and earn GA points.

Walts_Worker, I whole hartely agree, and you have a few posters that have very high numbers of post and usually have only a few words posted. Are they only posting to increase their count ? As they don't seem to be of any help, are they just using this Blog for socializing. Maybe if more people would use the Off Topic button it would eliminate so many pointless post. J.Conway

Re: Too many times...

What is pointless to one may be of significant import to someone else, just as a curt answer can be more helpful in some cases than an in-depth analysis (i.e., posting a link to a more in-depth discussion).

What would be really helpful, in mine mind, would be a cross-reference that is easy to search. The history of these forums contains a wealth of knowledge that can be of benefit to expert and novice alike, but, as with all compendiums of knowledge, it can be extremely difficult to find pertinent information, especially in an area outside one's expertise. While I enjoy tremendously the social aspects of these exchanges, when I am in need of serious information, it can be a significant chore to wade through the social and humorous asides one generally encounters I am also guilty of letting my politics inform my replies on certain occasions.

What would be really nice would be something on the line of a "Frequently Asked Questions" summary, rated for various levels of expertise, with encapsulations of the responses that most closely provide correct technical responses, with links to the original threads for those who chose to follow them. That, of course, would require a significant editing effort, and would require the full-time dedication of people with no axes to grind. A general search based on terminology is not going to help those that don't know the proper terminology...

This is the beauty of it. Some yee-ha asks the above question and the next thing you know there are 387 responses and we are discussing white dwarfs and deep ocean habitats simultaneously.

Hell, more than half the time I don't even know if the OP has returned to his/her own damn question.

Hello and welcome Walts_Worker

I have not read the 'Rules' for a while but what tends to happen is, someone sees a point answered, which they too have needed the answer for so another question the same or similar is sent.

It is all part of the general chatter and to and fro between the different forums on the site. A subject on one forum can also be on another. Perhaps asked by the same person. Perhaps by a different one, and it may be phrased slightly differently so maybe easier to answer?

My advice to you, now you are a member.......one of us, and, there is a lot of talent behind some of the banter, as you will see from time to time when we/they get down to answering some interesting or particularly difficult question......................

.....Is to jump in and get soaking wet with knowledge! You cannot beat it!

You can from now on give your opinion or definitive answer to a specialised subject you are an expert in or very interested in. Just let it all hang out..........UUrrmmmm, so as to speak........... ahemmm........

Good luck and the floor is yours sir!

Take care and happy new year...............

Re: Too many times...

As a new member myself I would like to jump in on this thread... While I agree that too much mindless chatter can present a challenge to someone looking for the answer to a question, it has been my experience that this chatter adds a human quality to the site (I don't know about you but last I checked I am homo-sapien and I suspect you are to...) which allows the users a chance to get to know the person behind the avatar. If you need some particular piece of information knowing who out there thinks/speaks (writes) in the same manner that you do can be very helpful, and if you're getting to much drivel in the mix you can always ask for clarification.

It would be nice if more people would use the 'off-topic' button, then you can set your preferences to display the 'off-topic' items minimized which will help you sift through the chatter to get to the meat of the topic, but I definitely would not encourage any sort of chatter ban because that will make the site sterile and less useful.

Besides, who would you rather get advice from? Someone you've chatted with, maybe even shared a joke? Or would you prefer some complete stranger whom you know nothing about except that their name is Bob7498376 and they have a picture of a kumquat next to their name?

Hello hairlesssimian:

Uuummm,........I am not sure how to say this but,...........uummm, can they arrest you being a homo-sapien? I heard there was some special medication they gave you that made you normal............Or, all Engineers like that?.......Actually, now I have dug the hole and am stuck in it can you explain something.................You said last time you checked you was a homo-sapien? How can you tell?

To the topic, well almost...........I think if you get a qualified person like yourself who wants to know something, they will more than likely give you all the details you need in their first post. It is when you get the odd (meant in the nicest possible way) person who knows what they want but there English is worse than mine! There may be ten words in the first post and three are spelled correctly. So you have to guess what they want, and of course what the 'missing' words are in their post, but, to finally get the BINGGGG.........moment when the light bulb lights as you realise what they want and you are able to help them. I find they are some of the most rewarding as I feel I have truly achieved something.

I actually do not know what I would do if this place and all the members and non members (which is probably the majority) were not here to just say hello to. As you say a little levity helps and levity here helps 'life' go down and seem a little smoother in the hard times...............

Is is often that a person IS that "bridge over troubled water", and they do not realise they have been. That has been the case with me and there have been some really nice up-lifting messages................................Hey, I went all soppy there.........

Better go now..........

Take care and good luck! Do not be worried about any post, if you think you can help or you know something written is wrong, then just jump in! There may be one person who doesn't like what you say at that moment, but in the long run you will be respected in your honesty.

Take care and happy new year.................

Hey there babybear...

There is a special medication available for that but it is only available on Christmas Island where they mine a special phosphate compund essential to its manufacture... at least that's what I've heard...

As for how I checked... well, I didn't... I fabricated some data in order to get my grant approved, but don't tell anyone or my funding will get yanked...

Please answer questions 7, 9 10 & 11.

Too many questions seem to come from lazy students, who don't yet know that real understanding only comes from bashing your head against problems until they crack.

Hello ffej:

Not seen you before.

You are so right. It is the searching which often takes you to sites because a word or phrase catches your eye? It is all part of the learning process. If someone, school kid or not thinks they can learn anything in much depth, by looking at the answers here they are right. But, what if the site is not working or they cannot find it 'in the field'? Do they give up until they come the two thousand miles back home?

Solving problems is what it is about.

In life as well as on here you have to initiate information. Whether it is finding a phone battery, a watch strap or a flight to California........Now theres an idea!

The info trail start with nothing and if done correctly, and there is any number of ways to find things out, you will end up with all the details you were looking for. And it kind of makes you feel like you have accomplished something if you find out all by yourself?

There is times when you may want a technical answer, then is the time to write in, not just because you have a vague idea about something. Be precise and give as much info as possible.

WE ARE NOT MIND READERS!

Take care and a great new year to all! Not forgetting you ffej!

I agree, I 've read several of these types of posts and gone on to google and had answers within seconds. Some of the questions seem very familiar, like stuff I took as a student or gave as a faculty asst years ago. If it is "school work" they should first crack a book or do a bit of web surfing before looking for the easy solution.

But remember we chose to be here as a resorce for people with a need. We don't know how far some have looked before coming here. It would be difficult to pick out those we deem as deserving of our combined knowledge and just cast aside those we think are "just lazy".

and not everybody in the world has the same access to technical literature as we do in north america. Some people, even if trained in technical things, maybe abroad, have to deal with equipment or specifications far outside of their training, for which little literature exists. Therefore, a group of experts provides 'to the point' information.

This brings us back to the "Inputs". I still believe that people should provide a detailed question, full of facts and figures about the context of the application they are seeking information or answers on.

Yes - there have been many instances where one of the first three or four responses (often mine) mentions that the OP will get a more useful answer if they will provide a better question. Some of them lack enough detail to understand what their problem is. And some, while it is obvious English is not the first language, just seem disjointed to the point of gibberish. One prompted a rather long series of referential humor - "I want by a mish for..." Someone finally figured out they wanted to buy a machine. The cream of the crop will return to say a reply solved their problem. And you know the % of cream in milk...

Hi Jerrell, we all have enemies. Those I can deal with, it's those who seem to be friends that we need to watch. And remember that just because someone it critical of you or your methods that doesn't make them the enemy.

I propose the use of simple Templates that are help to structure the inputs, specific to the category. Being engineers and technical people, we should be able to facilitate the process, and not just complain about it. (although that is fun sometimes too! )

Walts Worker,

I agree with you. Many a times some students ask complete design of the plants. How it is possible to give such massive information and who would give it free. We can help them in some respect but can not do their homework. Many a times information given is vague. Best thing would be to have a questionnaire format where complete information is asked.

It happens. If they knew enough to post all the necessary information they could probably, at least, look up the answer themselves.

Remember, half the population is below median intellegence. Worse, most didn't get a decent education in the physical sciences or critical thinking.

Re: Too many times...

Going through the exercise of understanding that more information is required is part of the learning process. When I see posts that are not sure what they are asking for I happliy list what they need to know first. Simply because they will learn something from it.

Being mechanical, I've posted questions with what I know about a topic (such as electrical, which isn't much) and received some very good responses on what I should know first.

Everyone has to start somewhere.

It's along the lines of "is the glass half FULL or half EMPTY" I think. Myself, I prefer to think of it as half full...but of WHAT?!?

Hi Charley,

2220 posts in such a short time my hats off to you. Certainly Some one is drinking from your glass.Who? God knows. Many do not even bother to visit a second time to even know weather some one has replied some thing to their thread, leave alone provide more information if you ask for, to provide a meaning full answer. But few of us always read. As for the replies few utilise , few appreciate ,few ignore still we reply. As for the threads I read them daily some make me think, some make me to research, some make me irritate , some make me angry , some make me laugh, some force me to reply because we are addicted already. Ultimately I enjoy it. Let them ask which ever way they want.Let them ridicule / enjoy our knowledge, ignorance or experience.

Hello V.I.Abraham:

As for the threads I read them daily some make me think, some make me to research, some make me irritate , some make me angry , some make me laugh, some force me to reply because we are addicted already.

I do get a little annoyed when the OP apparently, does not even consider returning and saying thank you, or sorry I will try somewhere else. Especially when you know damn well a dozen or so members and non members have responded, and continue to respond for days, and you get a big fat 'O' back.

I am not sure if they think we are paid and it matters not whether we spend time searching for them or not. Or if they are doing it for a bet or to see what happens. For all we know they may still be asking other questions and doing the same thing.....ignoring responces........but we cannot tell if the OP is a Guest?

It does make a real nice change when sincere people do continue input and update the data, and then finally say thanks!.........It is common courtesy after all?

But, as to your ref' above says in bold, it is a little like life in that respect?

Hey, take care.............

Hi babybear,

You are dam right. If an OP say thank you, the advice was helpful we really feel satisfied. In one thread an OP responded not only with a thanks but told "he was eagerly waiting for my reply . I really felt happy with such a response from some one as it shows some members are sincerely reading our replies even if the OP is not responding . It is a nice reward for the time we spend in writing replies.

Regards

I'm gonna guess that your glass is half full of a lovely malted grain beverage known in the english speaking world as beer... but maybe I'm mis-interpretting your avatar...

Interpreted correctly! My current avatar is indeed beer, and I consume at least my share. It's good food, has lots of nutritional value, high B-vitamin content, and makes you feel good too. As Benjamin Franklin said: "Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy."

Hi EnviroMan,

" Drinking is injurious to Health" some doctors and most of the priests in church ( at least in India) say "though shalt not drink alcohol " and like my close friend( who frequently drag me to the bar), you too say it is good and follow Benjamin Franklin. I am confused .

Well, beyond the known positive heath benefits listed for the daily beer and wine, there are the not so measurable health benefits.

Stress relief. Stress is a big health issue in todays society. A few beers or a couple of glasses of wine sure lets me forget the troubles of the day.

Pain relief. Todays doctors are all too often pushing drugs for even the mildest pain. Beer you can self-administer at a rate that works for you. And you know what the side affects are.

Socializing. Many times people gather simply to drink beer together. Great way to make friends, if you can understand them or remember their names after a few beers.

Procreation. I bet there are a lot of guys that would never have asked their future wife to dance without a beer or two in them.

Canadian. Our international reputation of a laid back friendly nation could be attributed to the fact that we drink A LOT! (I forget the stats but it is a little astounding.) People tend not to shoot at us or blow us up as much. No better health benefit.

So.... if you want to be a happy-go-lucky Canuk like me.... have a beer or two.

Over consumption is not good for you, but that can be said of pure water. "A little wine, for thy stomach's sake" is also an adage to live by. Some people would have you not drink beer or wine simply because they fear that you might enjoy it, and in their estimation, enjoying something is intrinsically bad. I do my best to ignore them.

Hi EnvironMan,

OK oK I agree little consumption of alcohol is good as you say but even excess consumption of pure water is also bad ( You will be surprised to know that) "one person died of over drinking of water due to the excess water flooding her lungs. Real news reported in "Times of India" (one of the most reputed News papers of India). "She was advised to consume one to two glass of water in the early morning for good health. Instead of two she started to drink more than 8 to 10 glass of water at a time resulted in her death"as reported.

I hope you are fine?

In reply to this post about over consumption etc........I think all should be careful as both wine and bear are extremely dangerous. If you are 'testing' the latest brew, it is easy to slip and fall in and drown. One has to take care in these situations, do you not think sir?

I agree. I am a 15 yr tooling design engineer. I am amazed at the knowledge of this site and it's members. I do read and learn a lot from all of you here. As you can see I have posted very few times as there is not much need in my area of expertise. I do, as I know most members, enjoy the banter and jokers. In our field of stress we need a few laughs every now and then.

Hello possum,

How are you? I have seen you a few times. What you say is very true, There is some very bright sparks with knowledge down to their toes! I heard the nail clipping are more valuable than gold!

Is the Engineer tool maker your first job?

I always wanted to work on a lathe. Really interested in Engineering and was not able to do it because of an allergy to drilling lube and all kinds of other lube.

There would be no modern world if it was not for the chaps on here and other Engineers like you.

Take care and happy new year............

Don't actually make the tool's, I only design them. I specialize in final check gauges and robotic welding fixtures. Used to sell the complete Robotic systems till the industry took a dive about 8 yrs ago. Now I work for a tubing company that supplies carriers, bumpers and other tube components to Honda and Yamaha for their ATVs and Side x side vehicles.

Walts_Worker

In the land of serendipity there are sometimes answers with out questions.

CR4 is a bit like that. A sterile environment is not always of help. Some personal or humorous touch is very important.

I have sat in meetings were decisions had to be made that were of utmost importance. Even in such situations, drifting off topic, can be appreciated by all, only to take a harder grip on the matters at hand, when things proceed.

Keeping a friendly and constructive tone is more important than to regulate some people having a bit of fun while the problem is tackled.

"CR4 is not a troubleshooting your work online site."

Well, if someone has to ask CR4, he/she must have a problem at work which can not be solved in their environment or with the knowledge they have. If only CR4 had existed 30 years ago things could be very different.

If you think it is wise to disregard a plea for help, don't answer. You should leave us others the opportunity to make up our own minds about helping though. If I can I will. If I can't (which is usually the case) I shut up.

I am not sure if this is off topic, so fine me, whoever. Ky.

Ky, I will have to agree with you, if a person doesn't like the questions why on earth would they bitch about trying to give an answer? They owe no one anything. I myself only replie to what I have hands on experience with so my replies only contain what I deem necessary to advance the toppic to the next level, I may never receive the sought after GA this way but I feel its a more effective way to begine with. Why invest a great deal in an answer before your sure that you are able to respond at the level they require, don't build a street sweeper if they only need a broom. Don't build them a factory and bitch the whole time before you are clear that's what they are asking for. I believe a lot of the people whome ask the questions are looking for interaction on the topic in their first request for help and when they find the person of the correct decipline and background they will invest more time in providing explicit details. This is no different than when you meet with a client, you seek out the common ground before advancing to the heart of the problem. In a request for help earlier I supplied the information needed to begin the elimination of the problem as asked for not a chemistry lesson on how to eliminate the results of the problem because the thread had not advanced that far yet. I certainly believe you deserve a GA for sampling the water before adjusting the heat. J.Conway

I second your comment:

"I myself only replie to what I have hands on experience with so my replies only contain what I deem necessary to advance the toppic to the next level"

A guess or shot in the dark answer helps no one.

I will often cut and paste a google search result like this..............

Results 1 - 10 of about 628,000 for drag coefficient. (0.20 seconds)

...........when it seems a simple search would answer the OP question.

Hello Tex,

Take care..........

/quote There are the "Tips for Posting" just above, but I highly doubt many people pay attention to it. Maybe have it on a separate page and then have the user click 'okay' to actually write their post... /quote

I really didn't have a question... Just some rantings and ravings by a mad/crazy type person. Mostly about posts that are a few words long that ask for a detailed explination about something when there isn't enough infomration given in the first place... Then not to mention that 'they' don't give any further info or reply again...

Walts_Worker, I just can't seem to get a grip on the insanity of this. No one here owes anybody anything except the facts as you understand them if you decide to reply. If a person isn't satisfied with the questions why on earth attempt to belittle them for trying to ask. Are some members that desperate for an opertunity to increase their counts that they are made to feel inadequate when they can't respond an are ashamed to ask for a clarification to what's not understood? I would hope that this group is wise enough to relize that not all people have mastered the English language, but that doesn't stop them from attempting to further their knowledge even though they may have to have the reply read and translated so they can understand what this is you are trying to explain, to them your answer may be just as mystifying. Why do people give answers so technical when when the question was so simple, only required what was asked, not how much they know. Let's start putting things in the proper perspective, you can always follow up with additional info and maybe start a decent dialogue unless your afraid of missing a chance at the GA Championships. This same type of dialogue has been taking place all over CR4 and it apears many are grasping for the soullution. As far as the spellchecker goes mine appears before I type and can not be found afterwards, go figure. J.Conway
