Too many times...

People who can't seek out their own information aren't going to seek out the rules for how to post on CR4.

My advice is just to ignore and/or enjoy the chatter.

what? I have this problem you see, at my house and ,well it seems to be electrical and well maybe --- it is , maybe from the garden hose. you know what I mean? what do I do about that???

Something like that? I have also seen similar,and I agree it is annoying at best. I'm new to CR4 and like the info and my opportunity to help if I can but some of these questions are sorely lacking.

I think we should have a list of properly worked out questions available (for posters who really would like to ask a question but with nothing to ask) to choose from.

In addition we could have a model answer available for members to evaluate proper GA votes. A lazy poster could even copy and past and earn GA points.

Walts_Worker, I whole hartely agree, and you have a few posters that have very high numbers of post and usually have only a few words posted. Are they only posting to increase their count ? As they don't seem to be of any help, are they just using this Blog for socializing. Maybe if more people would use the Off Topic button it would eliminate so many pointless post. J.Conway

As a new member myself I would like to jump in on this thread... While I agree that too much mindless chatter can present a challenge to someone looking for the answer to a question, it has been my experience that this chatter adds a human quality to the site (I don't know about you but last I checked I am homo-sapien and I suspect you are to...) which allows the users a chance to get to know the person behind the avatar. If you need some particular piece of information knowing who out there thinks/speaks (writes) in the same manner that you do can be very helpful, and if you're getting to much drivel in the mix you can always ask for clarification.

It would be nice if more people would use the 'off-topic' button, then you can set your preferences to display the 'off-topic' items minimized which will help you sift through the chatter to get to the meat of the topic, but I definitely would not encourage any sort of chatter ban because that will make the site sterile and less useful.

Besides, who would you rather get advice from? Someone you've chatted with, maybe even shared a joke? Or would you prefer some complete stranger whom you know nothing about except that their name is Bob7498376 and they have a picture of a kumquat next to their name?

To the topic, well almost...........I think if you get a qualified person like yourself who wants to know something, they will more than likely give you all the details you need in their first post. It is when you get the odd (meant in the nicest possible way) person who knows what they want but there English is worse than mine! There may be ten words in the first post and three are spelled correctly. So you have to guess what they want, and of course what the 'missing' words are in their post, but, to finally get the BINGGGG.........moment when the light bulb lights as you realise what they want and you are able to help them. I find they are some of the most rewarding as I feel I have truly achieved something.

I actually do not know what I would do if this place and all the members and non members (which is probably the majority) were not here to just say hello to. As you say a little levity helps and levity here helps 'life' go down and seem a little smoother in the hard times...............

Is is often that a person IS that "bridge over troubled water", and they do not realise they have been. That has been the case with me and there have been some really nice up-lifting messages................................Hey, I went all soppy there.........

You are so right. It is the searching which often takes you to sites because a word or phrase catches your eye? It is all part of the learning process. If someone, school kid or not thinks they can learn anything in much depth, by looking at the answers here they are right. But, what if the site is not working or they cannot find it 'in the field'? Do they give up until they come the two thousand miles back home?

Solving problems is what it is about.

In life as well as on here you have to initiate information. Whether it is finding a phone battery, a watch strap or a flight to California........Now theres an idea!

The info trail start with nothing and if done correctly, and there is any number of ways to find things out, you will end up with all the details you were looking for. And it kind of makes you feel like you have accomplished something if you find out all by yourself?

There is times when you may want a technical answer, then is the time to write in, not just because you have a vague idea about something. Be precise and give as much info as possible.

I agree, I 've read several of these types of posts and gone on to google and had answers within seconds. Some of the questions seem very familiar,like stuff I took as a student or gave as a faculty asst years ago. If it is "school work" they should first crack a book or do a bit of web surfing before looking for the easy solution.

But remember we chose to be here as a resorce for people with a need. We don't know how far some have looked before coming here. It would be difficult to pick out those we deem as deserving of our combined knowledge and just cast aside those we think are "just lazy".

and not everybody in the world has the same access to technical literature as we do in north america. Some people, even if trained in technical things, maybe abroad, have to deal with equipment or specifications far outside of their training, for which little literature exists. Therefore, a group of experts provides 'to the point' information.

This brings us back to the "Inputs". I still believe that people should provide a detailed question, full of facts and figures about the context of the application they are seeking information or answers on.

Yes - there have been many instances where one of the first three or four responses (often mine) mentions that the OP will get a more useful answer if they will provide a better question. Some of them lack enough detail to understand what their problem is. And some, while it is obvious English is not the first language, just seem disjointed to the point of gibberish. One prompted a rather long series of referential humor - "I want by a mish for..." Someone finally figured out they wanted to buy a machine. The cream of the crop will return to say a reply solved their problem. And you know the % of cream in milk...

I propose the use of simple Templates that are help to structure the inputs, specific to the category. Being engineers and technical people, we should be able to facilitate the process, and not just complain about it. (although that is fun sometimes too! )

I agree with you. Many a times some students ask complete design of the plants. How it is possible to give such massive information and who would give it free. We can help them in some respect but can not do their homework.Many a times information given is vague. Best thing would be to have a questionnaire format where complete information is asked.

It happens. If they knew enough to post all the necessary information they could probably, at least, look up the answer themselves.

Remember, half the population is below median intellegence. Worse, most didn't get a decent education in the physical sciences or critical thinking.

Going through the exercise of understanding that more information is required is part of the learning process. When I see posts that are not sure what they are asking for I happliy list what they need to know first. Simply because they will learn something from it.

Being mechanical, I've posted questions with what I know about a topic (such as electrical, which isn't much) and received some very good responses on what I should know first.

Everyone has to start somewhere.

It's along the lines of "is the glass half FULL or half EMPTY" I think. Myself, I prefer to think of it as half full...but of WHAT?!?

God knows.Many do not even bother to visit a second time to even know weather some one has replied some thing to their thread, leave alone provide more information if you ask for, to provide a meaning full answer. But few of us always read. As for the replies few utilise , few appreciate ,few ignore still we reply. As for the threads I read them daily some make me think, some make me to research, some make me irritate , some make me angry , some make me laugh,some force me to reply because we are addicted already. Ultimately I enjoy it. Let them ask which ever way they want.Let them ridicule / enjoy our knowledge, ignorance or experience.

I do get a little annoyed when the OP apparently, does not even consider returning and saying thank you, or sorry I will try somewhere else. Especially when you know damn well a dozen or so members and non members have responded, and continue to respond for days, and you get a big fat 'O' back.

I am not sure if they think we are paid and it matters not whether we spend time searching for them or not. Or if they are doing it for a bet or to see what happens. For all we know they may still be asking other questions and doing the same thing.....ignoring responces........but we cannot tell if the OP is a Guest?

It does make a real nice change when sincere people do continue input and update the data, and then finally say thanks!.........It is common courtesy after all?

You are dam right. If an OP say thank you, the advice was helpful we really feel satisfied. In one thread an OP responded not only with a thanks but told "he was eagerly waiting for my reply . I really felt happy with such a response from some one as it shows some members are sincerely reading our replies even if the OP is not responding . It is a nice reward for the time we spend in writing replies.

I agree. I am a 15 yr tooling design engineer. I am amazed at the knowledge of this site and it's members. I do read and learn a lot from all of you here. As you can see I have posted very few times as there is not much need in my area of expertise. I do, as I know most members, enjoy the banter and jokers. In our field of stress we need a few laughs every now and then.

Ky, I will have to agree with you, if a person doesn't like the questions why on earth would they bitch about trying to give an answer? They owe no one anything. I myself only replie to what I have hands on experience with so my replies only contain what I deem necessary to advance the toppic to the next level, I may never receive the sought after GA this way but I feel its a more effective way to begine with. Why invest a great deal in an answer before your sure that you are able to respond at the level they require, don't build a street sweeper if they only need a broom. Don't build them a factory and bitch the whole time before you are clear that's what they are asking for. I believe a lot of the people whome ask the questions are looking for interaction on the topic in their first request for help and when they find the person of the correct decipline and background they will invest more time in providing explicit details. This is no different than when you meet with a client, you seek out the common ground before advancing to the heart of the problem. In a request for help earlier I supplied the information needed to begin the elimination of the problem as asked for not a chemistry lesson on how to eliminate the results of the problem because the thread had not advanced that far yet. I certainly believe you deserve a GA for sampling the water before adjusting the heat. J.Conway

I really didn't have a question... Just some rantings and ravings by a mad/crazy type person. Walts_Worker, I just can't seem to get a grip on the insanity of this. No one here owes anybody anything except the facts as you understand them if you decide to reply. If a person isn't satisfied with the questions why on earth attempt to belittle them for trying to ask. Are some members that desperate for an opertunity to increase their counts that they are made to feel inadequate when they can't respond an are ashamed to ask for a clarification to what's not understood? I would hope that this group is wise enough to relize that not all people have mastered the English language, but that doesn't stop them from attempting to further their knowledge even though they may have to have the reply read and translated so they can understand what this is you are trying to explain, to them your answer may be just as mystifying. Why do people give answers so technical when when the question was so simple, only required what was asked, not how much they know. Let's start putting things in the proper perspective, you can always follow up with additional info and maybe start a decent dialogue unless your afraid of missing a chance at the GA Championships. This same type of dialogue has been taking place all over CR4 and it apears many are grasping for the soullution.
