Abuse of Statistics

01/15/2009 3:38 AM

I came across this the other day, discussing how well a top sportsman (archer) would perform with beginners' kit.
He scores 98 out of 100 with his best kit and then 90 out of 100 with the 'beginner' kit. That's 500% worse! Was the conclusion .(dropped 2 points with good kit, but 10 with bad, 10 is 5 times more than 2!)

It took a huge argument discussion to show the daftness of the working.
It's woolly thinking like this that lets a gullible public be conned by spurious advertising and semi-literate sportsmen saying ' Yeh, well I give it 110% din't I '
Seen any good abuse of stats lately?

Del

There is an old story about archers and King Arthur. As King Arthur rode through the forest he noticed all the arrows in trees and all were in a small circle indicating that all were in the bull's eye. He was amazed at this accuracy and he asked his knights to find the person who was able to shoot with such accuracy. After scouring the local villages they came back with this young fellow. King Arthur asked him if he had shot all of these arrows into the bull's eye. The fellow said yes that he was responsible. King Arthur asked him to demonstrate his prowess. The young fellow took his bow and arrow and shot an arrow into a tree. He then ran up to the tree and drew a small circle around the arrow.

I'm not sure which abuse of statistics bothers me more. The misuse in medicals studies or in marketing.

I suppose we could call the correct use of statistics "Probability" and leave the misuses as a statistic.

I saw on the Office Watch site that the BBC radio has a weekly program on exactly this issue, called appropriately "more or less". http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/programmes/more_or_less/default.stm I must still check out the podcast at http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/podcasts/moreorless/. It is a mixture of subjects, in association with the Open University.

Tim Harford does rather a good job - I listen when I can catch it.

Even though it reminds me of some rather revolting margarine adverts*:
"I can't believe he's ... an economist."
(But maybe they at least haven't reached S.A.)

Hi Del

I do some pistol shooting, not very well, but I enjoy it.

My pistol is a cheap Chinese weapon. When an expert shoots it, his scores drop significantly.

When I shoot a good weapon, my scores only improve slightly.

In other words, my skill level is not high enough for good equipment to make much difference. The pistol shoots better than I can.

I think this explains the difference between the scores obtained by your expert archer with good equipment and poor equipment. He can shoot well enough for it to make a difference. A beginner probably can't.

our product is 90% ineffective, bring in the our marketing and accountants and make it sound good. Get our oversee manufacturers, put pressure on them to cut costs have them use inferior paint. Repackage it, mark it up 200%. and sell it on sale with 20% off. Aaahhh, my MBA from ivory league colleges is really paying off for this company.

Much of what has been said (apart from the joking) was written in 1954 by Darrel Huff in a wonderful book called "How to Lie with Statistics". It was republished several times and probably is still available in second hand bookshops. "Lie" in this context has to do with untruth, not "positionong oneself horizontally".

Re: Abuse of Statistics

Thers a story that some guy on trial for fraud or some such, deliberatley sat in the dock with a copy of that book on prominent display in his pocket when the prosecution were attacking him.

There was a horrible case in this country where a woman was jailed (verdict overturned subsequently after a few years) for killing her baby. Some dumb 'expert' doctor was quoting odds of zillions to 1 against a second 'cot death' in the familly.
I dunno what the defence was doing...I could have thown his asertion out in 2 minutes simply by tossing a coin and asking him the chance of the next toss being the same. A first cot death doesn't make a second less likely, in fact, if one assumes there is a genetic cause for the first, then a second becomes more likely.

People just get blinded by 'experts' and statistics....I remember yelling at the TV at the time (or was that yesterday...oh...its every day?)
It was rather upsetting (Brit understatment) her defence council and the expert should have been jailed.... Oh yes the 'expert' was discredited ..bit f*cking late for her

One of the more recent ideas about cot-death reasons is that some mattresses emit something allergenic. This can be minimized by encasing the mattress in rubber or plastic. Either that or an electric fan which circulates the air in a baby's room.

Re: Abuse of Statistics

One use has often irritated me.

Environmentalists are fond of saying "Our pollution, per head of population is the highest in the world".

The last time I looked at the subject, the environment didn't care how much pollution per head, it was affected by the total pollution.

This means that Australia is a comparatively small polluter, while Indonesia and China are large ones.

The point of this is the "pollution per head" cry often influences governement to take stronger action than is needed.

(I believe in reducing pollution as much as possible by decreasing waste and increasing use of the unavoidable wastes. This will reduce "pollution per head")

There are those out there that believe the way to a clean and sustainable planet is to reduce its population. If I remember correctly, the last maximum target number was 500,000,000 people total.

Yep! And they're out there. There are movements among those that are basically rich, environmentalist, hippie, new-agers (meaning nothing negative in any of those terms) that believe this. This is not paranoia. You have the web and you can find them. Also, they hold conventions and seminars on how all this stuff might be done. They don't try to keep it secret, either.

This is why I don't worry about things like are the people on CR4, engineers or not.

A cynical twat might say this is partially taken care of by global wars, but the real deal is there for an airborne virus like the 1918 Spanish Flu which killed tens of millions in a matter of a few weeks.

Are you saying an engineered® Retro-Virus* is in order** ?

(® Monsanto? Ciba? Rosch? - you decide)

(* RNA-copying viruses have much higher epidemic rate)

(** In order to induce a massive effort to save the planet)

- - - -

Just kidding, of course

If you recall, I said I was going to save the water. Not my fault the bottles floated down to Africa, across to the Carib, then drifted up to a Florida swamp. The labels would have washed off, so it was an innocent mistake by the locals.

Do you get those, "Caution, Baby on Board" ones ? Like what's it going to do - drive erratically, forget to indicate ? Does it imply that otherwise I can shunt the car as much as I like ? Usually there isn't no baby, so I guess it's for hapless firecrew to waste their bleedin' time after a crash playing 'hunt the baby'. Oooooh, I feel a rant coming on ! m-u-s-t---r--e--s----t--r--a-i----n-----a---r----mmm

Those were all over the place back in the '80's, don't see 'em much any more. Must've put 'em in the lend/lease package last trip around. Another one I like (tho' it's a trifle worrisome) is:

I can't go to work today - the voices told me to stay home and clean the guns.

Right. And are they clean now? Or is that where you're driving to? Hmmm...

Back in the 70's, funny sayings/pictures on t-shirts were the big thing. It must be making a comeback, because I see more on t-shirts than bumper stickers.

Two recent favorites:

"Go ahead, act stupid. I could use another felony conviction."

"Unfortunately, stupidity is not a crime. You may go."

Yeah...there's a lot of 'em about.
Oooooh there's a car coming the other way ...brake.
Oooooh there's a leaf in the road....brake.

Oooooh there's a parked car, there's still room to drive an articulated lorry sideways through the gap...but I'd better brake just in case.

Curious - most of the Baby-on-Board cars I see in the Harlow area have the reverse problem. So I've never been able to decide whether these notices are intended to give space for extreme driving, or they are placed by family in the forlorn hope that other (more responsible*) drivers will keep their cherished ones safe.

(I suppose it comes to the same thing in the end)

*Part of the Harlow paradox - I noticed this when they first elected Jerry Hayes

You've set me thinking about names on the front windscreen. When I've recovered from this Essex-moment, and wiped the coffee from the monitor, I'll return. Those signs would be a great prezzy for Shaz to give Wayne. It saves her saying, "'ere, Wayne, arv missed me....". Maybe the baby signs refers to Wayne's youth ?

True, Gordon Ramsey even has that title for a TV show. The FCUK brand is seen all over the place here, and we're constantly reminded by adverts that's "Australians would'nt give a XXXX..". The last one is probably a statistical abuse, since I'm sure there are probably some prim Australians. At least one or two anyway. The funny bit about the armpit photo is that anyone who's shocked when first seeing it (ie most of us), is probably revealing their inner murkier thoughts.

Maybe you could use some sort of ultrasound to mangle the eggs contents, then gently cook it. Not sure if that counts as omlette, but it would be interesting to try. When chilled, it would make a nice snack, all wrapped in it's own hygienic/protective eco-cover. I'm guessing, but Scotch Eggs probably don't feature much in cuisine out your way ? Minced chicken might work, but I think the overall meat/dairy mix would be a bit of a problem in trad jewish cooking. I'm not sure to be honest, but they do taste nice. Best with salad cream.

You could cook an egg in the shell, but eating it that way might prove problematic. I never thought of them as a "crunchy snack"! Here's an egg ("tamagotchi" is "egg" in Japanese) you have to cook a looooonng time:

On the assumption that pollution is bad, which government has taken too much action ?

If people don't reduce personal waste of energy/resources, it's not very convincing to lobby governments to do it. There are other factors as well ; If I needed an ambulance, I'd want the driver to burn rubber and to heck with his fuel consumption. Also there are issues like rich places getting their pollution done elsewhere (importing energy etc), and rich people paying cash for carbon offsetting ('I can fly more now, I'm paying a surcharge so it's OK').

Wahhhh....It's complicated, but I agree we need to individually cut consumption and waste.

Stats on obesity are probably a good example of how to abuse numbers, but I'm going to have a cigarette and save some electrons from whizzing around.

"On the assumption that pollution is bad, which government has taken too much action?"

Now there's a short list! Only a bit longer is the list of governments that have done anything at all. Then there's the list (get out the long roll of paper for this one) of governments who have abdicated responsibility for, authority over, and interest in pollution and the control of it. Statistically speaking, they are definitely abusing nature.

The other day, I was talking to a Texan. Although he accepted the premise that global warming was predominantly man-made, he too could clearly see that the Texan contribution was negligible.

I have therefore decided to regard myself as being a member of a small group of people called "the ultra-privileged". There are very few of us; so, although our per-capita generation of pollutants is about ten times that of even the average Australian, our total contribution is negligible. Obviously not my problem, then - though I will of course ensure that any waste I generate is handled in the best manner possible.

[Regrettably, the action that is needed is to reduce total pollution to a specific level - and you cannot realistically expect any group to peg their average generation below the global requirement. As the Australian government has (shared) responsibility primarily for its own production, the necessary level for them must be the same as for everyone else.]
