CR4 Challenge #OGU812

02/05/2009 8:10 PM

Here's an interesting device I uncovered the other day. I can tell you that if you ever used one of these, you definitely have some grey hair.

OK, what is it?

Extra points if you can name the manufacturer.

Extra points if you can give the theory of operation.

Extra points if you can provide an example of the modern day replacement.

"Ancient proctologist instrument?", AND a "breathalyser?"

Now that's a really scary thought!

OK, the cop says, "bend over, you might feel a pinch, good, now blow into this".

Well, you did say that having to use of those things will give you gray hair. I should think that having to blow into something that has just anal probed me would give me not just gray hair, but white hair.

It is a WWII GPS in a backpack. The eyepiece is for looking at the micro photo of the area.

The thing can also double as a coffee grinder .

Hi Bricktop can you move the carry strap a bit on the next photo?

Got the grey hair so qualify to have used one but no idea what it is.

Top photo looks like it is monocular and bottom one looks binocular.

Still do not not know what it is but a colonoscope comes to mind.

The shape of the front end rings a bell (very dull these days). Looks like it would fit into the injector port of a large marine diesel engine.

Hi Bricktop,

I knew in your collection of useful artifacts you had one of those vintage instruments which you still use to validate the porosity of tea bags and their biodegradability.

All joking aside what you have there closely resembles an Optical Pyrometer, that one by Leeds & Northrup/Philadelphia around 1940s.

Consists of galvanometer, standard cell, four dry cells, resistors, two slidewires and knobs; connected to a scope by cable; scope consists of lenses, switch, filament, lamp and a means for focusing.

Current from the cells act upon the set of resistors. One of these is variable and can be controlled by the use of the large knob on the side of the box. The scale of this resistor is calibrated in degrees C. As the resistance is varied, the filament in the scope alters in brightness until it matches the source, leading to the term "disappearing filament pyrometer". Temperature is read directly from the scale.

Optical Pyrometer or Disappearing Filament Optical Pyrometer
An operator views a hot target through a small telescope containing a calibrated lamp filament in the image plane.

The lamp filament is initially cooler than the target and appears dark before it. The sighting index appears black below the filament.
The lamp current is raised until the filament becomes hotter than the target and it appears brighter than the target.
The lamp current is adjusted until the lamp temperature equals that of the target. The filament blends into the glowing background of the target.

Good job Aussie! I wish I could give you more GA's. Come on guys, back me up and give this guy the other 2 GA's that he deserves.

Why?

He knew exactly what this instrument is.

He explained the theory of operation.

He even named the manufacturer.

He probably has some gray hair, (if any hair at all).

He has mentioned that these are items in his employer's storage areas. I can relate to that. In the job that inspired me to go into drafting, I had to sort through and organize a library of drawings, catalogs, and manuals. I found drawings of machines they no longer had, drawings of a store that doesn't exist anymore, and drawings of parts and products they don't make anymore. I wish I had some of them in an electronic form that I could post here. They would make for some interesting challenges!

Its the employer that is not so short of storage space, that he must throw out everything that he does not use everyday.

Bob, don't forget that private companies must pay property taxes on inventory (expecialy in the Union of Soviet Socialist Massachusetts, where even your air is taxed to death. Ironic when you recall that the tea party was in Boston harbor, my how the mighty have fallen.), so few companies can afford to have stuff sitting about gathering dust for years and years. I suspect Bricky works for a governmental entity.

Actually, the facility was built by the Air Force, in 1955, as part of their "Heavy Press Program". It cost so much money that no private company could foot the bill, (however, it was run and managed by a private company). The big press alone cost $55,000,000, in 1955 $$!. It is still a viable production tool today, being one of the largest in the world. The Air Force sold it to the company that ran and managed it in 1983.

"Accountants" and "clever", hum, somehow those 2 words just don't sound right together.

All this stuff was written down to zero many decades ago. Some of this stuff I've posted hasn't seen the light of day in many years. Most has no value at all, but I just can't bring myself to throwing it out.

I'm glad I didn't, it's taken on a second life as CR4 challenges!

Don't know why you can't see the picture, it shows up fine in Firefox. Because I linked to it, you can right click on the pic, choose Properties and copy the link into your browser's address window. That should take you to the picture's source.

Maybe since Hurricane Ike a picture of a messy ham shack might look like the rest of your environment, so you can't tell the difference between the pic and your surroundings. Or else, you have a messy ham shack, and the pic just blends in.

Well, it might not show up now. I just came in to check the latest comments, and the pic didn't show.

I right-clicked, chose View Image, and it directed me to the website. The message on the page said too many people were linking to the pix on his website and overworking his servers. So, he has disabled linking to his pix.

Too late for me to edit the first post, or I would copy the pic to photobucket and link to it there.

Thanks for the multiple GAs.

Can recall using a Land pyrometer many years ago in boiler testing, when L&N had their name on many boiler control panels. Its encouraging to give details on this which might be educational for others.

Grey and still there, but still able to hold a beer without shaking a drop and still remember clearly where I may have left the glass!

These old device challenges should continue, so much more productive than suggesting to a guest what is a suitable final year project.

(Pic acknowledgement to Sparky)

Cheers

I really don't know what the record is. I know europium and sparky, (where the hell is sparky?), have run up some big numbers. Does anyone know the record?

Ask the moderator to close the thread. The screen is shaking. It may just explode.

"The screen is shaking. It may just explode."

Beware! That's a sure sign that there's gremlin about.

Modern replacement? It's amazing, but people still make optical pyrometers - but they also make multi-wavelength sensor-based ones that are more accurate in most situations - these latter are very dull to look at - a control box, a tube, and a line-up sight and a tube, and that's about it. (I think that the most precise use a diffraction grating to select the wavelength band to help calibrate out emissivity)

Very many years ago I was involved in photometric standards, and we used a swivelling mirror to switch between sources, a double prism monochromator, and a photo-multiplier at the back. This was before there was any sensible automation. Oh, the joy of timing and writing down photon counts and calculating variances and ratios using a hand-cranked calculator (we had an early motor-driven one as well, but that kept breaking down).

There are a few very good, although somewhat pricey opticals made today. These are laser pointed.

Here's a couple that we use, and if fact have about 50 of them on the floor:

And the Raytek, made by Fluke, (so you know it's overpriced):

I believe that both of these are the "very dull to look at" pyrometers I was referring to. In these, the instrument basically senses the amount of radiation coming from the source and the "standardisation" is in the sensitivity. (For measurements close or below to room temperature they will need an accurate measure of the temperature of the pyrometer as well)

But people still make hot wire optical pyrometers, where the IR/optical output of the device under test is compared against the output of a reference at the measurement temperature (either by eye or using a thermocouple). Curiously, they seem to be more common for high temperature measurements (where I can't see any need) than for measurements very near instrument temperature, where the AC techniques they enable can be useful to enhance the sensitivity.

Doesn't the emissivity of the object being tested affect the accuracy of such instruments? not everything is a perfect black body radiator.

Yes, both instruments have an emissivity adjustment. We just pre-set them at .95. As they are used only for a quick reference, they really don't have to be spot on.

Actually, the units we use have a range from 400F to 3275F. They are used for a quick reference for die temps., (around 900F), and to see if pieces are up to forge temps, (anywhere from about 1400F to 2400F). They are both very rugged instrument, that can take the abuse, (almost), of daily shop use, ( I sometimes think guys use them for hammers).
