Lateral Thinking 2

02/09/2009 7:37 PM

Answers to previous Puzzles:

http://cr4.globalspec.com/thread/32973

1. The man was walking through a train tunnel and was almost at the end when he heard a whistle and spotted the train coming towards him. He therefore had to move forward, towards the train, so that he could jump clear safely.

2. The pilot was the boy's mother.

3. The man committed suicide with an icicle.

4. 1.) Playing Baseball
2.) A Catcher

3.) Third Base

Lateral Thinking 2

1. It was a dark stormy night and a couple were in a car racing madly through a foreign city. The car broke down and the husband had to go get help from someone who spoke his language. He was afraid to leave his wife alone in the car so he pulled up the windows and locked the car before leaving. When he came back, the car was in the same state as he had left it but his wife was dead, there was blood on the floor and there was a stranger in the car. What happened?

2. A police officer saw a truck driver clearly going the wrong way down a one-way street, but did not try to stop him. Why not?

3. Bob and Carol and Ted and Alice all live in the same house. Bob
and Carol go out to a movie, and when they return, Alice is lying dead
on the floor in a puddle of water and glass. It is obvious that Ted
killed her but Ted is not prosecuted or severely punished.

4. A man buys rice at $1 a pound from American growers and sells them at $0.05 a pound in India. As a result of this he becomes a millionaire. How come?

5. How could a baby fall out of a twenty-story building onto the ground and live?

1 - he got lost, same model and year car, but not his.

2 - He saw the truck in his rear view mirror

3 - Ted is the cat, Alice was the fish.

4 - ? have to think on that - what Bob said...

5 - sure as long as it fell from the first floor window.

1 - he got lost, same model and year car, but not his.

How did his wife get in the other car?

2 - He saw the truck in his rear view mirror

Possible under two conditions: He is parked, facing the right way, when the truck pulls onto the street the wrong way behind him; or he (the officer) turned onto the street after the truck passed the intersection (not likely, because the officer would see the truck going the wrong way as he approaches the intersection). In either case, I believe the officer has the right to drive the wrong way to catch him.

3 - Ted is the cat, Alice was the fish.

One problem with that - the puzzle says that Alice was dead on the floor, not in Ted's tummy. You show me a cat that breaks a fishbowl and doesn't eat the fish! Ted hit Alice over the head with the fishbowl.

1. Don't know. I will have to cogitate on that one.

2. The officer was on foot.

3. Ted left before Bob and Alice returned. Or he committed suicide after he killed Alice.

4. He bought the rice to plant and grow a large crop.

5. The baby fell out of a lower floor, maybe even the ground floor.

1) He killed his wife (or was carrying her dead body - more probable) before going, the stranger was the policeman.

(2) He was not in a position to stop - he saw from his toilet window/he was not on duty/ he saw from his garden/...

4)

a)The man is american grower in India/ America (he be bought from himself @$1 and sold @$0.05 - look at the tax bnefit due to losses and it is his money changing hand and saving taxes - common business practice).

b) The $ are the profit margins at the transactions and not the rate/ lbs

c) Got to think if any of the pounds are £ and not lbs.

5) simple already explained- fell from the ground floor window of 22 floor house (could have been on ground on 22nd floor too, if the word fell out was not there )

In #1, the car broke down because it was in a wreck. The wife was injured and bleeding. She died before her husband returned. The stranger is either a police officer or a firefighter that a passerby called to the scene. He broke into the locked car to rescue the woman.

4) The man sells the crop in INDIA, where they use the rupee, a very small form of currency, where 1USDwould be equal to perhaps as many as 50 rupee, so selling 20 pound which would have cost $20 now sells for 50 rupee, he is a millionare, but in a different currency.

Re: Lateral Thinking 2

1. I think that his wife died during child-birth and the baby is the "stranger".

2. The truck is backing up on the street (perfectly legal, as long as you face the right direction).

3. I think that Alice is a fish and Ted is a dog (to avoid his eating Alice, as mentioned above). Of course, my dogs would probable eat Alice anyway....

4. The man plants the American rice and gets so much that he can sell his crop for $0.05/pound and still make a million. One rice seed gives many rice seeds.

5. I agree with the suggestion that the baby fell from the first floor window to the ground.

I kind of like these puzzles, they help get my mind working.

Lots of good answers. Perhaps new number 4 could support a number of different solutions?

a) Subsidy
b) Very different dollars used for the transactions (US dollars in India, worthless dollars in Latin America)
c) Only part of his business has been mentioned - he also sells in dearer America and buys cheaper in India, or he doesn't buy on his own behalf
d) Transportation times are such that these transactions occur at times of famine and glut respectively - but he's good at using the futures market to offset his risk
e) Already mentioned - he's a rice farmer in the USA, and the expensive rice is high-quality seed - (but given transportation costs it might well be combined with a subsidy). The difficulty here (and for c) is that the wording "his rice" and "them" rather implies that they is the same rices.

I dunno, but I'd like to know how I got one ! Even more mysterious, how do you know I'm not one of the 3 who already awarded......Are you the secret admin who protects me from getting banished ? I'll send extra doughnuts up to troy this week. If I make it 4 will that confuse people - my ability to award 1,2 or possibly even 4 + votes to one post might arouse suspicion.
