Looking for a Hand-Cranked Vacuum Pump

02/13/2009 4:05 AM

Hello, I am looking for a small, 100 W, hand cranked vacuum pump that can sustain a high intensity of vacuum for its size.

??? What's 100 W? 100 watts? If it's 100 watts, how does the "hand cranked" part come into play? How high is the vacuum intensity?

"How high is the vacuum intensity?"

100 W*, of course.

Note: 1 W = One Standard Walrus (plus a bit of seaweed). He's planning to lift five score of them to safety.

Boy, that's some hand you got there! Even an athlete in tip-top shape can pedal only 1/4 horsepower (about 186 watts) and only for a short period of time. Have you thought, perhaps, of getting a number of smaller pumps and involving your family?

Getting to the point...how about something like this:

I don't have any figures on its capability, but I have used this type and it can hold a vacuum very well. Of course, it can't beat a purpose built pump but then you don't have to be concerned about oil, cleanliness, etc. It is a simple, quick and dirty source of vacuum

Hello Guest, I have included a couple of types, as I do not know exactly/at all what you want it for.

Hope they are helpful.

The second address refers to the piece I tried to paste in the bottom of this post. It will probably be the type you first think of as the archetypal hand cranked pump, vacuum or not.

Have a look it is well worth it.

Crank it up! Put your students' excess energy to good use. Our high quality vacuum / pressure pump is a practical alternative to the flimsy plastic or expensive electric models on the market. Its heavy steel construction ensures it won't bounce around as lighter models might. It is geared to suck vacuum pressure through the same port regardless of which way the handle is cranked. This unit is ideal wherever a vacuum or pressure is required. Use it for experiments with vacuum tubes, vacuum filters, Magdeburg hemispheres, bell jars, density experiments, and many others.

35-085 Hand Crank Vacuum Pump specifications:
• 8.5 x 5.5 inch base
• 10.5 inches high
• 8.5 inch diameter crank wheel
• Riffled vacuum and pressure ports
• 17.3 lbs.

Thanks Baby Bear and Jaguar. The one that Baby Bear posted is the kind of deal I am looking for. Trying to put together a vacuum distillation unit that you can hand crank to establish vacuum.

Hello Guest,

I used something which looked the same at school so know it works. Not certain how long the vacuum will hold though. It was used only 30 minutes in a classic experiment where two half spheres are placed together and the only thing stopping them from parting is the vacuum.

Take care. And I am pleased I was some sort of help.

100W is not sustainable long-term by 1 arm in the workplace, unless the arm is John McEnroe's right one.
