What Is This Thing?

03/12/2009 10:20 PM

The last two picture challenges I posted were too easy. Let's see how I do this time.

The second picture might give it away.

For those interested in scale, the small rectangular dark spot at the edge of the silver area in the first pic measures about 1/4 inch long (6mm). The symbol in the second pic measures about 3/8 inch (9mm) across the top.

The item is a common one, but it is the first of this particular type I have owned. I have used it to earn money.

All sorts of things are made in Bakelite these days. Whatever they are, you can't get hold of them because of the shortages.

Dammit Doug, it is very bad manners to start a thread and then not reply to the posters! Where are you?

Now, if you've been swamped with other stuff, I understand. If not, at least give hot / warm / cold feedback!!!

Re: What Is This Thing?

Sorry, I was busy yesterday. First, I had a client tie me up on the phone for 2 hours. Waited for paycheck to arrive. Took shower. Went to bank, post office, and store. Went back to store for something I forgot to get the first time. Went to Green Country Hamfest (hadn't been for last 3 years - regard it as my ham radio "home" because that's where I took the test to become a ham). Bought 2 antennas, one for car, one for handheld. Stayed a couple of hours before driving for an hour or so to get home. Read the afternoon paper, and finally ate some supper.

I will say that someone is very warm, but I won't say who. I want to see what else people will come up with. Some of the responses have been very amusing. Also, I need to transfer another pic of the item to my 'puter.

I appreciate your patience, and thank you for your support.

I was thinking image. I used to have a hand held long before flat beds were popular. It could also be barcode. What made me think of scanner was the fact that you used it to make money. Would be nice with OCR software to scan in books.

Calnet42 got it! It is a VTECH cordless phone, model ia5824, 5.8 GHz. I work at home providing installation support for Autodesk student software. That's how I have used it to earn money.

Thanks for the chuckles, guys. I have an idea for another challenge, but I might wait until I get a better camera before posting it.
