Optical illusion.

03/14/2009 7:56 AM

Hello,

I got many pictures like this of optical illusion, Cant shear all,

Is any logical explanation for this? If I see any one of these circles through an orifice it look stationary, but seeing all together is magical.

Looking for comments.

of course they are moving..

when a snake is alone it will generally remain still, but when you group them together like that they cant help but slither about.

Re: Optical illusion.

Are you sure all the vertical lines are straight ?

(All these and above were in our Visual training - NDT syllabus- optical illusion- How your eyes will fool you)

The whole concept here is too complex, The eyes see something, then the depth of feild comes in picture (as you see in the fisrt picture, focus on a patetrn and that does not move the ones on sides do) instrument error, then the brain tries to link and connect the pattern (so processing errors)

and a high bit is in unexplained errors.

These are important in the NDT-VT - how you miss the obvious - so a picture may tell you hundred words, but all the hundred words may be wrong.

Thanks Rakesh. I assume you have read the various explanations for these and other illusions. In college, I pursued an interest in perceptual psychology, and found that our brains create meaning from various stimuli, often by putting together hypotheses to fill in missing information.

The other day, I was looking at a very unusual bird in a tree. It then started to climb the tree, and instantly turned into a squirrel. My first hypothesis was wrong.

Re: Optical illusion.

03/15/2009 3:48 PM

Here's my guess on why that happens.

The colors are light blue and mustard-like orangie-yellow, that seem to have the same relationship as blue and orange, red and green, purple and yellow. Those are the complementary colors, where one is a primary color and the other one is a secondary color, a combination between the other two primary colors. Long story...

So complementary colors act as opposites, especially when there is white or black between them (I learned that in grade school painting class). The neutral limit (black or white) also acts as an enhancer so they seem stronger. As an example, that blue looks stronger or blue-er because there is a black/white line between it and orange/yellow. The contrast is therefore really strong and our eyes can hardly focus on it, which makes the circle move.

Now, I've noticed that the neighboring circles have blue and orange/yellow in opposite directions. Clockwise it goes like this:

circle no.1 : blue, black, orange/yellow, white, blue etc

circle no 2 : orange/yellow, black, blue, white, orange/yellow etc

That change in sequence makes then the circles move in opposite directions.

And of course, the little red tongues make them look like hypnotizing snakes

Hope it cleared a little bit the mystery.

Re: Optical illusion.

Yes, I am sure and he's not color blind in the form of seeing everything in shades of grey. Better put, he's color-inconsistent. Meaning to him sometimes red looks brown and yellow looks green, just to give 2 examples. Weird, I know...

I've edited the photo in Picasa and made it b&w. What I've noticed is that the snake's movement is slower and harder to see. Showed it to my husband again and he still doesn't see any movement.

So my guess is the construction of the image, meaning the circles, is the base and the colors amplify and modulate the movement. Hope it makes sense...

Re: Optical illusion.

I think that your explanation has some merit. I have a print out of the beautiful blue and mustard moving circles (toward the center the color comes to green). Being a "chipo" I have printed in black and white.

Now, it was another question if the movement has something to do with the screen flicker and that can contribute, too to the movement.

On the B&W print out there is much more less spinning. Is it the color combo? Is it the horizontal and vertical scanning?

By the way, trebuia sa fie cineva din Timisoara care sa sparga gheata pe CR4.
