How to dismantle a hydraulic cylinder to replace all the seals inside it?

First of all, you drain all the oil inside.

Then you remove all the bolts and slide out the piston. The piston will still be attached to the front cover of the cylinder. Remove the packing seal on the front cover and slide out the piston.

Take care to keep all your bolts and other parts in a box so that you won't lose them.

Of course, if you use a different cylinder from what we use, my suggestions will not help you.

regards,

Vulcan

What type of cylinder? Tie rod, displacement, telescopic... ????

Use and manufacturer would also be helpful.

If it is a welded cylinder like those used on earthmoving equipment and such, you'll have to resort to a saw to get to the piston seal. most cylinder heads have a threaded jam nut that slips over the rod and screws down onto a packing assembly. Getting the old packing assembly out without pulling the rod will be a major pain in the arse. be careful when slipping the new packing over the rod. many times the assembly is made up of a stack of different parts, the parts have to go on in the proper order and in the correct direction. don't get the out of order or turned around or you'll be sorry. be careful slipping them over the rod, the chevron shaped parts don't like sliding on in that direction and can get damaged if you aren't careful. other types use a spring energized polypack instead of a rod packing. these also have to be oriented correctly. pay attention to the orientation when you disassemble and put the parts back in the same orientation.

By following the original equipment manufacturer's maintenance instructions.

Never use airpressure to disassamble a hydraulic cylinder.Use either a cylinder puller or hydraulic pressure.

It depends as mentioned on what type of cylinder . for auto lift cylinders there is a piece of bar stock that must be removed or some times a spring ring , before you can seperate / pull the piston from the case. If you need any seals for rotary lifts or to, Veiw PDFs of lift parts breakdowns visit liftandlube.com
