Looking For 12 Volt Battery Sealed Lead Acid

04/24/2009 8:56 AM

Hello All; I am in need of a 12 volt battery sealed lead acid. Parameters are as follows: 1) Small in size say 7" tall 5" wide and no more than 10" long. 2) Able to be discharged at a rate of 2 amps for 12 to 14 hours. 3) Able to recover charge, without damage, within 6 to 7 hours over two years time 4) Readily available in mass quantity ( 200 units to 500 at a time ) meaning not a solely purpose built unit for this application. 5) And of course inexpensive. Any help you could offer would be great. 407 538 2337 cmpginc@bellsouth.net Sincerely, Laurence Albrecht

A motorcycle electric start battery, perhaps?

I'm not sure about expense, but I'd look at the Panasonic batteries here:

http://www.panasonic.com/industrial/battery/oem/chem/seal/

I've had a similar pair that I have abused the dickens out of for the past fifteen years. One is still as good as new, the other is starting to show amp-hour degradation.

Measure some at Walmart or Advanced Auto Parts.

Yep. Motorcycle battery, definitely. I also thought about those batteries that go into some brands of electric fences and garage doors, but they are more like high amp in short time. 2 amps for 12 to 14 hours, we're talking about around 28 Ah minimum.

I'd agree that this would be a very good fit. 14 hours at 2 amps would be 28 AH. The depth of discharge should not exceed 80%, so a 35 AH battery would be recommended. This is just very slightly undersized. If the extra size could be tolerated, then a 40 AH battery would last longer -- but two years is a short time for a good battery, so this 34 ah one should work fine.

Blink,

Thanks for agreeing.

The downside is that their terminals become eaten away inside after a few years.

Gotta make sure the supply is freshly manufactured.

The high tech rechargeable Lithium Ion batteries have cost and serious safety and EPA issues.

The Nickel-metal Hydrides are my favorite.

Jon

I am not sure of the origional use. A friend of mine used to work at cummings desiel supply wharehouse well the trucks had a seperate system onboard which had thier own 12 volt battery it was 3 in thick about 4 in wide and about 8 in tall. I adapted a charger and used it for many many experaments. it lasted what seemed like forever and woul;d fully recahrge in 3 hours look into it . it may just be what your looking for.the battery was compleatly sealed aswell
