1991 Nissan Maxima - Battery Light Goes On and Off

05/06/2009 2:13 PM

I have a 1991 Nissan Maxima. Our car recently died on us, so we got a jump, the car died again on the way home. We thought it was the alternator so we got the alternator tested at autozone TWICE and it passed both times. Once putting the alternator back on we tested the battery, battery was reading alright, it had a little corrosion on it, we cleaned up the corrosion and unhooked the battery, car still ran fine. We tested the wires and the battery again after charging it up a bit and everything read fine. We assumed the problem had been fixed. While driving the car yesterday the battery light started going on and off again just like last time. The brake light would come on with it as well. The battery light comes on very dim but once I stop at the red light the light comes on very bright then once I accerlerate it goes right back off again. The brake light comes on very bright everytime the battery light comes on. We checked the fuses everything is fine. The only problem could be the battery so we changed it and the problem is still there.

I don't know what else it could be. Everything is good.

HELP!!

BTW sometimes the odometer doesn't work. Maybe that might help.

As it seems to improve when you accelerate, I would start by looking at the belt. If it slips, it could act this way.

Do you have a Good Ground? Check your battery to frame grounding strap, A loose or bad connection to ground will cause these problems.

I once bought a 5 year old truck from a spa company for 500 bucks because they could not get it fixed (It was in and out of half a dozen shops). It had similar problems. I started going through everything, and on accident I nudged a grouping of wires, and I heard a sound. Long story short, I replaced the Main Ground cable, and drove the truck for years with no problems. Now my younger brother still drives it (although now its getting high on miles)

Check for intermittent shorts. for example in the steering column.

Check for bad cables and connectors. For example the battery-chassis link.

If you don't find an electrical explaination, check the harmonic balancer when hot/having charging issues. I had this happen once where the pulley would begin losing engagement to the rubber core when hot, slipping and allowing a discharge condition. Worked fine when cold - damn near drove me nuts...

You should have the alternator tested on the car. At times, they will test OK on the bench, but will check bad on the vehicle. Also, other causes will show up during on vehicle testing.

Also, I would take the test results from the parts houses with a grain of salt. Many of these people are not properly trained in testing parts such as this. It is not a matter of being their fault, they are not oftentimes properly trained in using the test equipment.

I had a problem with my 1990 Buick Park Avenue like that. I checked sensors, battery, harmonic balancer grounds, alternator, and no availe. Come to find out later after no solution with this i decided to check the Electronic Control Module (ECM). Spent a lot of time and sure enough it was the computer. What a pain. I would check your computer The ECM controls many things that you would not expect.

Hi there, My Name is Bwankya Andrew, So sorry about that now what you have to do is to change the battery and put on the other one, Your battery is old to be used by your car, You might find that the water needs to be changed or some of the Rooms of your battery are dead, you might find that one or two are the ones woking, So change the battery. The other step is to check the wiring system, you might find that something is taking off the power of your battery, Please let me know if it works thanks.
