Today is an Odd Day (05/07/09)

05/07/2009 12:23 AM

Thursday, May 7, 2009 is an Odd Day. I know some will say that everyday for them is an odd day, but the date is composed of 3 consecutive odd numbers, 5 7 9.

What odd thing will you do to observe this day?

Oh, I don't know... maybe try to disregard posts by people presenting (relatively) insignificant numeric sequences as being significant!

(guess I failed)

I created three purchase requests; made five withdrawals from the stock room; tried to do seven different things with just one body; and visited CR4 three times.

Odd things indeed.

Re: Today is an Odd Day (05/07/09)

Oddly, it was my second day off in a row - an unheard of thing, pretty well, but necessary after lost track of days into weeks of slogging nose to grindstone.

(I'm thinking of joining a religion (any religion) that forces you not to work one day out of seven. Whoever thought this up had their heads on right. )

On this odd day off, I took my dad grocery shopping, but we snuck off to a nursery and bought some gifts for mothers day. We snuck back to my house to hide em. This is very odd for me, but shows that I do indeed have a sneaky playful side.

Of course it is only in one part of the world where this would be noticed, due to their peculiar way of writing the date.

Most of us will wait for the 5th of July for it to be 05/07/09.

And some parts of the world they year comes first, followed by month then by day...so November 13th would be odd (9 11 13 or 2009/11/13)

yy/mm/dd makes much more sense - we could continue with hours/mins/secs in a nice logical fashion. Either way you look at it, the American way seems plain wrong.. Date/time would be better combined, in either increasing or decreasing accuracy.

Re: Today is an Odd Day (05/07/09)

Yes it does. I used to resist non-American ways of writing dates, however, my job has taken me all over the world and so I got used to them.

Many of my coworkers, as well as myself, save a copy of a file (computer files, not the old paper things) before modifying it then append the name of the file with the date. Unless I knew what format they (or I) were using, it defeated the purpose. After switching back and forth between mm/dd/yy and dd/mm/yy, I decided it was best to end the ambiguity and started appending the date using DayMonthYear (23Mar2007) with the month abreviated. Granted this takes up a little more space (9 characters instead of 8 for mm/dd/yy or dd/mm/yy), but it leaves nothing to the imagination. This made life easier, but still doesn't allow one to sort files using the alphanumeric sort. So now if I think I may need to sort files based on dates (other than those of the file creation I use yyyy_mm_dd format (even though it might be ambiguous for others.

If the entire world would just agree to one way to represent dates, then life would be so much easier....although maybe a bit more boring.

The American way of writing dates makes sense though when you think about how dates are usually read in text (or at least older texts) or verbalized (i.e. May twelfth two thousand nine). Most people do not verbally say today is two thousand nine, May twelfth. And even dd/mm/yyyy makes sense as it is not uncommon to hear the twelfth of May in the year two thousand nine. Okay, no one really talks like that anymore, but you might catch it on a movie.

Hi JBT,

Some1000 years ago my ancestors in Sri Lanka have been using in their Ola leave scriptures and even today we use in our language Sinhala, the date in your preferred format yyyy_mm_dd.

Many nations who now try to teach us human rights & European values ( yesterday I heard on CNN, Milliband rambling this as his goal) were living in caves and wearing fig leaves!

I'm not sure if we've ever had a thread on date format (other than Excel manipulation), but it would make an interesting discussion.

In speech, Americans would refer to today as "five-twelve" (I think), whereas Brits would say "twelfth of the fifth". The more I think about this, the more I manage to confuse myself ! Tomorrow would become "five-thirteen"/"thirteenth of the fifth".

No wonder Scarlett O'Hara kept it simple and said, "After all... tomorrow is another day."

LOL - I don't know how he manages to do that, but it's brilliant. A couple of sketches by The Two Ronnies were based on a similar thing. The one that I liked best was "intoxicnineted". Not sure if you guys have the expression "one over the eight", but Victor's version fits alongside it perfectly !

I'm not aware of an American equivalent to that expression, or if one is needed. Those among us that imbibe are fond of creating new drinks, or ways of making the old ones more effective.

My father told me about the "Shell Shock," a drink served at the Shell Bar in Honolulu. The bar was featured in the early 1960's detective series "Hawaiian Eye." The drink started with a glass of beer that you would drink down halfway, then they would refill it with wine. He said very few men were still up to drink a second one.

Now, we do have plenty of colorful expressions for intoxicated: three sheets in the wind, polluted, skunked, wasted, snockered, $#!+faced, blotto, etc. We also have similar expressions for those often in that condition: tosspot, boozer, wino, distillery on legs, etc.

I doubt that many Brits have heard of Ponce Ponce.....yet. Brit euphemism might be a bit different if we had Puerto Rican neighbours. The written form of Ponce will raise a few eyebrows.

Drink is probably right up there with sex/toilet related stuff in the global list of 'greatest number of euphemism/idiom for'. Complex cultures seem to get more inhibited, which is a bit like the way in which large cities can isolate people more. Maybe we're biologically programmed to function in groups of a certain size Crikey, that's a bit philosophical for this time of day !

Since most of the world uses YEAR MONTH DAY, 2009 05 07, wait until July 5th. It will be exactly as significant as today, and just as much fun to talk about.

hm. strictly speaking, 2009 -as opposed to 9- doesn't 'rhyme' well with 5 and 7 anyway. and what if we use the Julian calendar?

(sorry to be such a spoilsport)

still, today the neighbour from upstairs didn't turn on his TV at 6am, as is usual. perhaps he overslept. therefore i actually got a full night's sleep AND managed to go to work on time. pretty extraordinary.

i just hope i won't have to wait until 2011/07/05 (prime numbers), or whatever, to get the next good night's sleep!
