tapping stainless steel on laser cut holes

05/10/2009 4:58 AM

i have a problem tapping M4 holes in 3 mm thick stainless steel 304 grade material. we need to tap around 40000 holes . the holes are made in laser. can any one suggest a good machine for the same and the type of tap we should use for this application and lubricant etc.

regards

At the ship yard, we oversized the holes slightly, as long as this does not effect your integrity. We did this using a waterjet., you have small holes, in thin material, so this may be a concern.

We also used beeswax as a lubricant to thread.

I do not wish to appear facetious...........although in most cases this does happen.

Surely this is something that would have had to have been researched BEFORE you tackle a job of this size and nature...........or do you take on a job and think "Hell! How am I going to do this job?"

your right.......I had assumed that he was farther down the line........sales brings in a project, without input. and sales says look at this big project I just brought in. and now he has to figure out to do it.

40,000 holes, hell I thought it was 4,000

The only jobs worth taking on are those I don't already know how to do- learning new things is what it's all about. Of course, it is sometimes hard to convince the customer he should pay for my learning curve...

I know what you had meant,

I was so accustom to handling jobs, sales brought in that was near impossible, and then trying to make it happen if not at budget, but still at a profit. Time line I never really hit. But the knowledge gain was very valuable.

And I did have a project similar, where the quantity of holes required had more 0's on it then was quoted out. Damn dyslexic salesman's.

Also the relationship between myself and sales was interesting. WHY DO YOU DO THIS TO ME? of course in a professional manner

I found up, on some projects, if one actually knew what you were getting yourself in you would never have pursued it. And that in its self has good points and bad points about it.

M4 holes in 3mm plate will not give you much strength, why not just oversize the hole and fit threaded inserts.

You can try GANG TAPPING, depending on pitch distance (Center-to-center distance of the holes).Get Ceramic taps and use no lubricant.

Years ago (1974),I had designed and built a tapping machine (tapping at 2000 rpm) for a production rate of 6500 holes per shift ≡≈20,000 holes per day with 99.8% accuracy (using Go/No GO guages inspection) for a sheet metal nuts manufacturer.Total annual production was 48,000,000 nuts for export to the USA markets from India.

Any radial drill machine fitted with the Gang tapper head will give accuracy and productivity on relatively large area type of work piece. The gang tapper will of course have to be custom designed and put together.

Please visit www.artecrobotics.com for background info.

Hope this helps.

Could it be that the, "Heat affected Zone," is part of your problem. I can visualize the wall of the hole being brittle perhaps and not welcoming to a tap.
