One has do do a bit of homework first For example visit somebody with that or similar product and inspect it carefully.

Price the parts and modification cost of parts you know won't last also price additional maintenance cost you can expect.

If your modified price is better than the alternative quote you have a winner if not shake your head vigorously and walk away.

It is the Cost Vs Quality adn it all depends on the users perspective. As we know quite a few have purchased these at some times almost 60-70% of other's price.

So I won't say that they will be loser, but the associated MTBF difference overrides the capital, in case of high investment like power plant. These are like marriages, marriage is costly, the divorce is costlier, because it is not only a Turbine or a generator, the whole system is interconnected.

It has to be a very careful pro and con assessment, most preferably with sufficient research from actual users as is already pointed out in the previous post.

What any user is expected to carry out is a lifetime cost calculation.

Take the initial cost, add up the running costs unscheduled equipment breakdown, calculate over years minus your expected returns

Compare with others and take decision.

And it is not much difficult, if you get the expected quality data from a few existing users and average them over.

Due to ethical problem I don't want to feed the data.

Just to add: another good source, get the Availability and PLF from different countries and you get the approximate idea of the quality of the main equipment suppliers of that country (for that you have to know Siemens is main supplier for .... country, Alsthom for ..., Mitsubishi for ... etc) Just a couple of them will be enough eg Germany, France, UK, Japan, China will do for you.

How reliable are these products for long run. as reliable as their cheap price. Why complain if they don't last long. You get what price you paid for.
