Wanted: Small Diesel Generator

05/15/2009 12:03 PM

I need to find a small diesel generator, not new, a used one, and with luck relativly inexpensive.

just another component in my current project.

Any ideas?

I recommend looking at ebay, there is always portable as well as large gensets available at good prices.

Only if you can collect though....

herein lies the problem.

I need somthing around 6000 to 8000 watts even a 10,000. I will give e-bay a look just in case there is something within reasonable distance.

Craig's list need a search feature, far too many cities with stuff for sale, takes hours to look at it all. these sites are most frustrating.

We snagged an ex-military genset/welder on ebay a few years ago 12,000 watts with a 4 cylinder gas not many people recognized.

Forward Air usually hauls the strange stuff we buy. Deferred air and ground freight. You might not get it immediately, but you will have confirmation they have it stored, and they will haul anything you can palletize.

So far; genset (700+lbs), Case tractor (300 lbs) - I lose track, but very affordable.

I had great service.

And they might move faster with an AOG sticker?

I thought Craig's list had a feature that allowed you to select the city. Maybe it's different north of the border?

I hope those wings are large, if your planning to haul that gen set with them.

I did search the city, it is a search for the rest of the country they need.

Ottawa being a Government town has nothing remotely industrial, only listing was for a very small gas generator.

I live in florida and go to county auctions at least once a month. They almost always have good diesel generators for sale. The one I will go May 16 has 4 listed, I looked at a 4 cylinder john deer motor with onan generator with 347 hr shown on meter, 50 kv, and disconect--- I think it will bring about $1200 Us. You can also pick up a cheap china unit new from Ironplanet.com for about $1200 or a varity of used units. Good luck----Jim creek

You may wish to look for marine gen sets, the diesel in the KW size is similar to one I saw in Green Bay WI Craigs List recently. May have been under boats.

try looking for an area that has recently had the wires brought to them. Most people who have electricity by wire don't want to bother with the genset.

There was something once said about buying a "pig in a poke". I would recommend caution about buying used mechanical equipment on-line unseen.

Have you looked into buying a PTO generator that farmers use and tie into their tractors. They are usually much less money and a 10KW can be connected to a small 20/25 hp tractor. Also you have a tractor or truck (must be manual w/ PTO) for other uses.

The down side - you have no method of governing. It has to run at a single state by way of a throttle.

For this application I need a stand alone unit that will work away without a PTO.

Thanks

I have an old ONAN 6kW 1800RPM. It's from the 70's, runs fine. In London, ON 519-640-8971 or trigs at hotmail dot com.

Thanks,

Steve
