Gun sales continue to soar

05/18/2009 8:23 AM

What do you think the reason for this is? Have you bought a new gun lately?

Another 1,225,980+ Guns Bought by Law-abiding Americans in April 2009

I have heard comments that allude to fears the Democrats are going after guns, etc; without actually hearing that from the Democrats, or from the gun buyers.

Maybe time to put some of mine on the market?

Re: Gun sales continue to soar

I've bought a few guns lately, but only one since last January. I did see one at the jockey lot that I now covet, and I'll probably buy it if the guy still has it this weekend.

I'm sure that a lot of people are a little paranoid about their right to "keep and bear arms," given the current administration's views on the matter, not to mention the liberal democrat congress' views. However, I think that there are so many gun owners in this country that it would be next to impossible to disarm the country as a whole.

That being said, the rate at which I buy guns will remain as it has.

I bought two paintball guns and a compound bow...does this count as guns?

As we all are limited to hero's and good leaders, I think people are buying more guns because no body else is looking after our safety and security...

"because no body else is looking after our safety and security..."

You got that right! Just look at South Central L.A., or Katrina.

Gun: survive

No gun: you get looted, raped, etc.

To quote former Senator Gramm from the Great State of Texas:

I have as many guns as I need, but I don't have as many as I want.

I am an avid target shooter and the biggest problem I am having now is ammunition; prices are going through the roof if you can find it at all.

Ammo is so hard to come by, that while 4 years ago I bought 7.62 X 39 by the caselot because it was so cheap, today I cannot find a box to send my wife's son for his birthday.

Suppose I'll have to pull some from my "stores".

And didn't we have a thread on what engineers could do during "down times"?

Become reloaders!

I haven't heard anything saying powder, case or bullets were in short supply.

I'm getting ready to order a Dillon Precision XL 650. I have heard that primers are hard to come by but I'm not sure.

When my father and I shot a lot more (he was into pin shooting competitions) we'd get the chucker set up and run off 500 rounds in a brief stint. (OK, maybe not that brief)

That is a very handsome reloader!

If you've been using a single stage press, you'll kick yourself for not doing this long ago.

Once you get the system/timing down you can put out a lot of ammo in a short time.

Among other things, I've become a "Sporting Clays" shooter. Have you checked on the price of lead shot lately? About $2.00/lb or more.

I've been tinkering with methods of making lead shot (may have seen a post I made on the subject awhile back) without having to make an 80' tall shot tower. I haven't been successful with what I've done yet but hope to within the next couple of weeks. Needless to say, I've learned a lot about how to not do it.

Thanks for the link -- they're cheaper than anyone else I've seen ('bout half)!

Problem with buying shot that has to be shipped is that the shipping costs run the price up to around $2/lb anyway, which is what I pay locally.

On the other hand, I can buy used tire weights for $0.25/lb, and if I ever get my shot maker working, I can produce usuable shotgun shells for less than half retail. Right now, I'm buying shot from a guy who makes his own 30 miles away at around $1/lb.

Got me beat both ways

Oddly, with wetland rules etc, the majority of "lead shot" searches come up with radioactive remediation supply sites

Good luck with shot production, did someone mention on the thread a rolling table method?

Hmmm . . . Rolling table method . . . No, I don't recall that anyone mentioned that method. What is it?

I had envisioned using two flat steel plates set at a slight angle to one another and pointed downhill (so to speak) with a gap at the lower edges increasing toward the lower ends with the upper plate being reciprocated with a crank so as to roll shot around (as one might do to a cookie dough ball with one's hands) so as to make round shot out of out-of-round shot (which I have managed to produce). So far, I've been having so much trouble even making out-of-round shot that I haven't pursued making the apparatus I just tried to describe.

Never underestimate the power of a little fear-mongering.

And since these whispered rumors of "The Dems gonna git yer guns!" caused such a paranoia-fueled run on weapons and ammo, it won't be long before other industries catch on to the profits to be had and start cranking up their own rumor mills.

Which leads to a little fun speculation. Which industry will be next to artificially boost sales this way?

The tire industry? Everyone knows landfills are full of discarded tires, which isn't "green". Stands to reason the Dems will be shutting down all tire production soon. Better get several sets before the stores empty out! Hurry!

<...Have you bought a new gun lately?...>

Some CR4 subscribers live in countries where firearms are much more tightly controlled!

In the UK, a private individual may own a shotgun following a rigorous police check of the individual and assessment of home security, under licence. The use of sporting weapons is even more tightly controlled and a club is about the closest one will get to using one. Air weapons are less tightly controlled, though there is a minimum age limit for legal use.

The police force is armed with little more than the modern equivalent of the traditional truncheon except under very particular circumstances. Some of the police at international airports, for example, can be seen with semi-automatic weapons.

Given the above controls and low exposure, just seeing a firearm in the UK can be a little unnerving.

Whereas *some* of us in the US grew up with a shotgun and a rifle in every pickup, and when popping into town in the middle of a sporting day, one could forget to remove their handgun without causing school lockdowns.

But even within the US this isn't universal, and certainly within the last couple decades is distinctly uncommon. Carrying a gun even to be repaired will bring most city streets to a standstill in the US now.

And I heard rumor (no offense - just asking) that an Australia group tried to remove the points from common kitchen knives?

Interesting that you should bring that up.

Something I read this morning:

Police Stop Man For Carrying Gun Out In Open

Milwaukee Chief To Officers: Ignore Gun Memo

MILWAUKEE COUNTY, Wis. -- As WISN 12 News was interviewing a West Allis man about his past arrest for carrying a gun in the open, police confronted him again Tuesday night -- one day after the state's attorney general ruled it's legal.

Whereas if he would shove it in his pants, no matter how noticeably, he would be protected from search.

And I must say the generally combative, confrontational nature of police/citizen relations within the US has become disturbing.

Great article, and news report!

I LOVE it, it's about time us honest citizens started creating the atmosphere that says: Back OFF, or I will take your head off..

The other evening, just after dark, (and My wife and I had stepped out for the evening), some stranger dude opened our back door, and came into our home..

Fortunately, my son-in-law was in the laundry room, and our faithful Dachshund, Romeo was waiting for him..

With Romeo in "Attack bark" mode, the Crack head thief hi-tailed out of the door, and with his waiting accomplice, and into the woods with my 6'7" son-in-law after them...

So, now, we have spread the word around the neighborhood, we do not keep cash here, but we DO have plenty of loaded guns, and we WILL use them next time..

Donald

When there was a Crack store out my back door, I became a believer in zoning laws, for the traffic was 24 hours a day.

I think I called the cops everyday.

I asked them to find out how well the delivery guys were armed, since all I had at the time was a 32 revolver patented in 1905.

Eventually they (the cops) set off a bomb.

Again- Democrats say they love you, but they want your guns.

Republicans say they hate you, but you can keep your guns.
