07/18/2009 10:50 PM

How much is AL-Li scrap worth? 40% of its original value?

The original value may include manufacturing charges that do not determine its value.

Prices fluctuate on a regular basis therefore the original value will not reflect a current value.

The cost of recycling, profit margins and the value to the new end user will determine the value.

Look at copper. The bulk price of copper is about $2.30 per pound. Copper scrap is graded as number one, clean bright copper, no solder or insulation and larger than wire size 10. Two is finer wire, enamelled wire, three is coated wire with insulation, and four is burnt wire whose price and grade vary a lot with the thickness. So you might get $1.90 for number one, $1.50 for 2, and $1 or less for three and 50 cents or less for burned. This is in reasonable lots of pure type. 500 pounds of number one with 5 pounds of number 4 in it is paid for as number 4, so wort it. Now go to Li-Al scrap. It is an exotic metals and varies in the ratio of Li-Al, so the dealer will want a know grade and probably 1000 pounds or so. Fine turnings might not be worth much, and cannot be scrapped with aluminum in case they explode. It will also be costly to buy. the place you buy it from can help if you buy volume as a primary user. Small amounts are a problem. Get a few free newsletters from this recycling group. There might be ads in there to follw up. and of course google http://www.recyclingtoday.com/Newsletter/default.asp

It depends upon where it is.

If you can guarantee the composition or separate the different Al-Li alloys the price may be higher than your estimate.

If you can only guarantee: Al-Li plus other alloying elements then the price will depend on possibilities of production of established Al-Li-alloys.

If you mix Al-Li with other Al-alloys the recycled material will totally loose its adherence to glues.

For the individual, it is nothing, for volume see

http://www.metalprices.com/

Send scrap to your local collection point for recycling, unless you can collect a lot and have your own recyling company.
