Look at copper. The bulk price of copper is about $2.30 per pound. Copper scrap is graded as number one, clean bright copper, no solder or insulation and larger than wire size 10. Two is finer wire, enamelled wire, three is coated wire with insulation, and four is burnt wire whose price and grade vary a lot with the thickness.
So you might get $1.90 for number one, $1.50 for 2, and $1 or less for three and 50 cents or less for burned.
This is in reasonable lots of pure type.
500 pounds of number one with 5 pounds of number 4 in it is paid for as number 4, so wort it.
Now go to Li-Al scrap. It is an exotic metals and varies in the ratio of Li-Al, so the dealer will want a know grade and probably 1000 pounds or so. Fine turnings might not be worth much, and cannot be scrapped with aluminum in case they explode. It will also be costly to buy. the place you buy it from can help if you buy volume as a primary user. Small amounts are a problem.
