12/13/2006 11:52 PM

Hi,

I have bought a Motorolla L6 it has a 10MB memory there is no memory slot to upgrade the memory. A USB cable can be plugged into the mobile i thought i could plugin a Pen drive.. can the phone detect the pendrive if plugged.

Also is there any otherway to upgrade the memory.....

samlnt,

I don't have a Motorola L6 but I've read the manual. It doesn't say that you can't but neither does it say that you can. To be on the safe side, I wouldn't try it (you haven't tried, have you?).

The thing to do here is to go to Motorola's website and ask their support services. Just a question: if you're not happy with what you bought, why did you buy it? There are other brands and models with more memory and some with expandable memory.

I have not tried it...actually it was a gift ....

Motorolla has made that the way it is and am sure the wont help coz if u can expand the memory it will be costing more...am asking for illegal ways.

Right, you're stuck with it. Only thing you can do is connect your phone to your PC and save your files to free up some memory. Mine is a Nokia 6020, 2.5Mb . I'm constantly saving my files, particularly images, just to keep the phone from hanging. Like you, it was...well not exactly a gift but something like it (company issue).

USB drives manifest as a slave as does the phone so you can't plug them together even if the phone had software to recognize a USB memory device which it undoubtedly doesn't.

There are some cheap units around that plug between 2 different USB slaves and allow data transfer, but whether this is advisable or not......at worst you will need a new phone I expect.

Most probably nothing dangerous would happen.....they are intended to allow a Digital camera to store images on a USB hard disk....

What do you need this extra memory for anyway, would there not be better things around to do the job without using the phone?

No way to upgrade the memory. As other folks have posted to this thread, the only thing you can do is move stuff off the device onto a PC or someplace else to store it.

Phones have memory for two purposes: ROM-like memory that tell the phone how to operate and RAM-like memory for the user's storage. For along time, the only memory available was the ROM which basically controlled the radio in the device and things like the microphone and earpiece, ringer volume, etc. In the past few years, with the advent of cameras and new ringtones, expanded address books, etc. manufacturers have added RAM. Application developers have taken advantage of this as well with Java games and such.

Each phone has a basic operating software (OS -- not to be contrued as an operating system). Most phones these days support an operating system as well, such as Java, Windows Mobile, Palm , Symbian, etc. This operating system allows the download of the applications and their operation on the device. The operating software and operating system work together to provide the end user experience. While the operating system is usually open, the operating software is almost always proprietary. Normally, there is a limit on what kind of peripheral devices will work with the device. You can check web sites like Phone Scoop (www.phonescoop.com) to get details on what the device supports.

All of this is just to give a bit of background in how mobile phones work -- and (unfortunately) why there isn't much you an do to modify what comes out of the box. If the mfr provides an SD slot, great. If not, you are generally limited, as you have seen with your L6.

Ask my friend, Mr. Google, he knows the answer.

If you google for Motorola L6, you'll get several web sites that offer accessories for the device. Fact is, you should have rec'd a data cable with the device that enables you to connect it to a PC and transfer pictures & such to or from the phone. If not, you can get the cable from one of the accessory providers.
