08/22/2009 2:00 AM

hello,

In our place, we are elevated by about 180meters from the creek. I want to install an electric motor pump. Our power supply is an 220vAC.What type of pump shoul I used?

Regards,

What sort of flow do you require?

And also distance so we can guesstimate the friction.

and also supply any info you care to give (excluding state secrets).

dear,

if you are interseted in energy savings, you may go for submersible pump with oil filled motor. power bills will be reduced by 30% compared to floor mtd pumps.

of course,

you may select the pipe line - may be pvc / flexible hdpe, to suit the pressure, but also of less friction & one size higher then recommended by the pump manufacturers.

Why not metallic pipe? This will stand for pressure as well.

Good luck! that's a lot of head to overcome. You will definitely need a multistage pump.

Check Search GlobalSpec for multi-stage centrifucal pumps.

HP = GPMxHD/(40xEFF)

GPM = HP(40xEFF)/HD

HD= HP(40xEFF)/GPM

EFF = GPM(HD)/40(HP)

with HP = horsepower, HD is the apparent head due to elevation and pipe friction, GPM = gals/min, EFF is efficiency in percent, typ 60%.

There are commercial pressure booster pumps that have the standard type motors but a multistage pump attached to it. I use one for watering my lawn. It is rated at 25 GPM at 85 PSI. There are bigger versions of these that can easily pump at over 500 PSI at high flow rates.

However given the run of the line is going to be long you will loose a far amount of efficiency just to that unless it rather large as mentioned earlier.

How much water do you need to lift that far?

And can you get enough electrical power to the pump in order too have it operate properly?

Even at a flow rate of a few gallons per minute you will still need several horspower to lift it that high.

you need to look where you have the facility to place your motor.. coz that will decide the tank head and sump depth... this you need to confirm before going for the motor... i guess for the total head of 180 meters u need to use a positive displacement pump...

Multistage transfer pumps are most common for these kind of high elevation pumping operations. As for the pressure head and flow rate of the pump, that will require data on the demand pattern and the pipe route and pipe material. Multistage pumps are preferable to larger single stage pump because of cost savings and safety since pressure is gradually stepped up. Preferably the pump should be supplied from a suction tank located nearby to prevent the pump from running dry. Otherwise, pumps with self priming capabilities can be considered.

Check with an irrigation supply company that installs center pivot irrigation from well water sources. 180 meters is pretty deep, but I know of several locations near Crystal City, Texas that pump from close to that depth.
