civil engineer to architect

10/21/2009 2:14 AM

helo guys! im julie. im a newbie in civil engineering field. i am currently working as an estimator on my first job. i am planning to work abroad. specifically in Australia. but i prefer something related to design. not in structural design but design in architecture field. i am really into architecture. could anyone suggest how should i start to develop my professional growth in architecture? is there companies abroad willing to give trainings like that?

I have to ask . . . Why not enroll in an architecture school? In the USA, one may not become a registered architect without graduating from an accredited school of architecture.

Without a degree in architecture, one may design anything, but if a registered architect doesn't 'sign off' on it, then it probably won't be used.

What I am going to say here may not be directly related to your question, but please bear with me. I don't remember which post it was, but your name (not "guest" but the "ylan s" handle) rings a bell. It was a good question, though maybe not yet highly knowledgeable.

From the standpoint of architecture, especially as it may relate to aesthetics, you would surely want to familiarize yourself with Frank Lloyd Wright, Frank Gehry, and Santiago Calatrava (!!!), to mention a few. (Far too few, actually.) From an engineering perspective, check out Mario Salvadori's books, and also Samuel Florman's "The Existential Pleasures of Engineering."

These are not technical books, but they may point some ways for you to find your own path between the technical and the artistic. They are enjoyable reading in any case, and they do a nice job of blending fine art with technological savvy. (May the twain meet more often!)

Blessings on your quest.
