Hi Folks
We've been working on a new feature for CR4 called "User Groups" that is almost ready to launch. The idea is that there is a new thing called a "user group" that registered users of CR4 can "join". Joining a user group will cause a little icon (or "badge") to appear under your avatar (or under your user name if you don't have an avatar), so other people can quickly see that you are a member of that group.
Also, each user group member gets to say a little something (a "membership message") that shows up in their profile and also in the user group itself. The membership message isn't a discussion (there are no "comments")... I think of it more like a physical membership card, or an index card, that is posted on the wall along with all of the "cards" from other user group members, which people can check out. Also, each user group can have different "badges" to choose from, so a single group can have smaller groups within it (or to use the different badges for fun).
I'll give you some examples:
Let's say we had a user group for people who liked to read fiction; in this case, the group might be called "Fiction" and the "membership message" would be lists of books that each member of the Fiction user group has read and would recommend. If you like fiction too then you can browse all of the recommendations made by others, even if you haven't joined the Fiction user group. This is one of the cooler aspects of user groups... you can learn something from the other members just by reading their membership messages. Also, anyone visiting the "profile" page for someone in the Fiction user group will see that person's recommendations.
Another example we are thinking of is a user group for each country that CR4 members come from. So, there would be lots of user groups and the "badge" for each user group might be the flag of that country. Once you join the right group (say, Canada), the Canadian flag would appear under your avatar and anyone going to the "Canada" user group would see you (and your membership message, which might contain something related to Canada, like where you went to university or something like that) along with everyone else who chose to join the "Canada" user group.
Both of these examples are pretty generic; we are also thinking of having user groups for things that would appeal more specifically to CR4's members, people interested in engineering and science. There might be user groups by "discipline" (electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, etc), or groups for graduates of different universities, or if you are interested in alternative energy, or cosmology, or restoring old hardware, or machining... you get the idea.
We'll have a way for you to request a new user group and a process to decide whether or not to create them (based on level of interest and if we think it is a good fit for CR4).
There is a bit more to the "user groups" feature but I don't want to go into all of the details right now... hopefully it will be easy enough to understand when it's live.
FYI, user groups do not get a dedicated forum; you won't be able to post to a "cosmology" forum by joining that user group. Having dedicated forums for popular user groups definitely makes sense to do someday, but we aren't going to do it now. You are always welcome to post your cosmology-related (or whatever) thoughts or questions into the existing forums (especially the General forum).
So, here's where we need your help. I'd like to set up the different Country user groups in advance of rolling out the feature so you folks have something to join on the first day. For that we need a list of countries to start out with. (Listing every country would be unwieldy and pointless.) I did some research based on CR4 log files and came up with the candidate list below. If your country is not on that list, please reply to this thread and let me know.
Countries to start with:
Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Egypt, France, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Kuwait, Malaysia, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, Philippines, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South Africa, Spain, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, United States
You can also reply to this thread with other ideas for user groups to create or questions about this feature... I'd love to get your feedback.
I'll be ready to release it in a matter of weeks, and all of us here at CR4 hope you have some fun with this new feature!
Thanks
- Mark Gaulin
Editors Note: The User Group feature is now released, and you can get to it via the "User Group Index" link in the "Site Indices" section of the right-hand navigation.
