Rust Marks Coming Through Plaster

12/01/2009 4:04 AM

I'm decorating and there are rust marks in one corner coming from the galvanised plaster edging bead.

There was water ingress in that corner, but I've re-roofed it last year and I'm now decorating. Would a coat of old gloss paint seal it? Or do any of you guys have any magic tips to prevent the rust showing through? I may resort to dry lining the whole room at some later date, as I want to put in a shower W.C, basin and add a couple of windows in the longterm.
The room is part of an extension 15' square with a flat roof.
Del
P.S I've got the mice out of there now, they were coming under the pation door which was installed by contractors a few years back, they never caulked under the sill.

Merry Maids.

PS: I called them once and and asked if they polished knobs. The answer was "Yes. How many knobs do you have?"

"Lemme check....just one."

"Just one?"

"Yes, ma'am, and it needs a jolly good polishing, too."

"Is this a joke?"

"No, ma'am, I'm as serious as a heart attack. And - forgive me for asking - but just how 'merry' are your maids, anyway? I don't want a dud, you understand."

Hi packrat,

I was afraid to ask what happened!

Did you see the newbie telling us off as if we were two school kids?

Have to laugh, he's beens on here three days and he thinks he owns the place! Fact is I have been working hard and I need to let my hair down and relax.

Take care.

Hello funny Packrat561,

You pollute again, and we have to cut more trees, and at the end you have to clean everything! So, stop be childish and return to the subject. Thus is the last suggestion, Gil.

N.B.: The other is two years younger than me and he is so funny that he si by himself outraged and disgusted how he comporting himself in front of the whole world. His father, not me as I suggested not to be, is shocked and frustrated to have someone in the distinguished family.

Hello form the Monster,

Check your ratio of answers (662) and good answers (2), just above 0.3%, and the controller of answers was probably sick two days on 664 and someone who replaced him, the controller, wanted to please to the principal controller and the secondary controller checked for "good" during those two days. Ah, still we have some "rust marks coming through plaster", Gil.

Hi GB,

FYI, there is no "Controller" of GA's. These are awarded based on any 'good marks', and each pair of good marks gives a Good Answers bonus thumbs up.

There has been a whole lot of discussion on this but for the most part and far outweighing any other points awarded, they are given for Good Answers, and often there is a thread that half a dozen and often lots more work on, and it is work, and knowledge, and good judgement, in my opinion that gets sensible and clearly enunciated answers to those in need.

Sometimes these threads can go on weeks and then be opened up by someone new to the site months later. That is what these answers are for, not just the current thread but, also hopefully future help on the same or similar queries.

So, there is one or two 'funny' posters. They help the flow and can sometimes redirect an answer or conversation.

As long as they are members, they can have the privileges of voting and or helping to organise the site in a way, by reporting nasty and or hateful remarks directed directly at a person. They get short thrift and can still write into the site but only as a Guest and they have no voting privileges at all.

My kind advice to you, is to chill out and concentrate on other threads that can use your knowledge. I will not be saying again. Get off your podium and CHILL!

Good luck.

Hi Gil, I hope you are still at least reading the thread as I think you need to appreciate that what you have contributed has been seen, understood, enhanced knowledge, and produced additional learning.

We all get into "differences in opinion" from time to time. A lot just boil down to this is "typing not speaking". Or how a thought got typed is not necessarily how it gets read. (and I think we all do the "from" and "form" thing, and similar)

Also the function of the Forum is multi-faceted.

Core is the information exchange but equally it's an outlet, a relief from the daily grind, a sanctuary, a place to enjoy 'like minds' when surrounded by 'pin pushers', 'verbal white noise', 'bean counters' and many more.

You will get 'naughtiness' and "constructive" in some or other proportion here, in time I hope you will enjoy the site as much for this, as the "information" - as I have come to.

A word on "answers" an "GA ratio". Folk who posted n posts over x years or have invested in a thread, tend to have a lot of posts compared to "GA's".

Some GA's are acquired mid-thread and turn out not to be. Some GA's are for 'comic relief'. Most GA's are for knowledge. Some GA's are from 2 votes, some may be from 10 or 20 votes.

Or you can't do the math, as you have done, as one number is 'contributions to the Forum' and the other for 'appreciation by the members'. For exactly what is hard to tell - until you have been around a while - even then it can be misleading.

Stay, contribute - but also play and enjoy?

Hi Kyzine,

Thanks for the words. At the start, I directly contributed to subject. It was good or bad for the user, it's another story but I suggested my best knowledge about. Hiddenly, I discover that pollution, danger to human existance, and other excesses of many people who are not educated and don't want to be educated change the subject to theirn futile conversation. I don't criticize the person who use solvent containing products, I go against the use of those products because we have equivalent in waterbourne. Also, our gevernments don't punish the makers of those products but it's good for another dialogue. If you don't want to change yourself why you want to change others opinions, actions...? So, there are no reason to write a note to someone else, isn't it?

Every communication has two sides, sender and receiver and the most often they are not on the same page.

Also, put together and judge who is naughty and who is constructive. I never engage myself in this kind of conversation because there is nothing to learn, and is not a defense from my side, just want to say, there is a time to make jokes and another time to be serious or constructive.

In this note like many times I suggest to use products are fitting to the present society, so waterbourne coatings will be suggested and recommanded by me to every human being. This will be something to learn for someone and depleasant for another but each person with their opinion can or must defend that opinion without making ridiculous someone else because we can on the Internet.

Thanks again for your calming words and wish you a happy weekend, Gil.

Hi GB,

You said:

"Hiddenly, I discover that pollution, danger to human existance, and other excesses of many people who are not educated and don't want to be educated change the subject to theirn futile conversation".

I agree in part with what you say in your total post.

But the piece I copied and pasted above of yours is not only insulting to those on this site and thread, it is also insulting to the general public.

I know of no one who wherever possible and to the best of their ability in their particular situation does not crave "Knowledge".It is the 'Human Condition' to find out why.

The Indians in a South American Forest have knowledge in minute detail of their entire surrounding, which literally help them stay alive and keeps them and their Families safe.

In the "West" people are said to be educated. But the definition of 'Knowledge' and 'Education' has a myriad of meanings. People, peasant Farmers in China or anywhere else are educated in things we would not see as 'crucial', they have great knowledge of Farming and the weather and animals and breeding. Something a City worker would really not think about.

Human Civilisation in all its forms, has gotten to where we are today, with huge Cities, and Minings operation, and the Stock Exchange et al, because we crave knowledge. How that particular knowledge imparts on other humans and the whole animal kingdom and the whole world, varies. But all are knowledgeable.

The piece you wrote and I pasted above, could be aimed at me and packrat, or the rest of what you see as "the people who do not matter and are ignorant", but everyone matters!

In other words, you should be very careful when choosing your words and phrases for your post, because such as the piece you written above can and will be taken as an insult and or, perhaps worse, be put down to your ignorance.

Start your own thread on this subject if it is that close to your heart.

But, looking at the reality in this world, governments are not about to outlaw any kind of solvent as they all have there place. Water is a brilliant solvent and cleaner, but it is not a magic wand to be waved over everything and then all is fine.

If you have this knowledge about Governments banning solvents, on your own thread prove it by doing your own research and publish known facts rather than 'what should be'.

Here on CR4, a thread can look 'dead' and can be said to have run its course. Then a joke and or funny remark will alter the direction of the original threads meaning and a totally new way of looking at things emerges.

So do not 'decry' the jokers and what you may think are foolish stupid people. These 'foolish stupid' people, have spent all day at work and need and or want to let off a little steam, and choose to do it by helping others, in a community of mostly 'like minded individuals'.

Some people may be ill and others going through hard times and, diving head first into a thread and finding the detail that makes the diference to that threads outcome, is one way of leaving their troubles behind for a few minutes, hours, days and weeks. It is a way of live which the members are trying their best to discuss a subject, often a very skilled subject, to allow other that have just found the site and those that have just joined to gain from the knowledge thrown into the ring.

You would not go up to every person walking down the street telling them they are wrong to do this or that, so do not think you can do the same here. We each have our own way of doing things, our own 'values', and that includes everyone on this site.

Do not ever insult someones way of life or values, as that person could one day safe your life.

Take care.

Hi packrat/packdrill,

I thank you. I am not after making enemies. I just want to be allowed to do my own thing without some arse telling me it is wrong. Wrong? According to whom, someone whom has ~7 posts?

You know I do not normally mess around here on CR4, it is not that type of site. I am respectful of the skill and the apparent intuative knowledge of other members, and I often feel unworthy here.

I usually have my head down trying to do my very best on researching whatever I am working on at the time, but now any then I find a great friend, all be it on line, but, nun the less a friend to have a joke with and to forget my problems for a while................. Until some arse comes along........

It is no way to start your new membership to anything.

Take care.

Stop sweating the small stuff, Gil - T.P. and all that - and consider the global impact my annual open-air Plutonium-Burning Party has on the environment (although last year we had to burn depleted uranium cuz we couldn't find enough Ruskie smoke detectors on the surplus market to pull the millicurie-sized flecks from. And yes, I know I shouldn't end a sentence in a preposition, but I like polluting the language, too).

You're invited, btw. BYOS (bring your own shielding).

Care for a snifter of Gran Marnier and DDT? I'd offer some Agent Orange but the flavors clash.

Hi europium,

Like it! At least we live in the world as is! The next piece of anyones 'ideals' are all in ones imagination.

BTW, Am I still invites to your new clear/year GET IT? Rave? I know the smelling spelling is incorrect but, it looks wrong for my meaning spelt correctly. I remember I got real high last year! Like way over 60 miles I think? Where was it last year, area 51.5? Somewhere near Death Valley I believe. When I came too I was in Virginia!

But that is a whole nother story, but she had a nice smile! Someone said it was Mona leavya? So I did, she still kept smilling though.

Good luck..........

Well said Sir!

The crucial point you mentioned was, "until you have been around a while"! Trying to tell "old stagers" how and what to say when you yourself has only 7 posts, is definetely out of order.

Take care and good luck.

Hi Kyzine,

I am a little bewildered by your reply post?

You may have been responding to this:?

"you yourself has only 7 posts, is definitely out of order".

I also ask your forgiveness for my bad spelling in the post you replied to! Sorry!

Where I say "you yourself", I am referring to GIL not you, OK? I got my writing mixed up. I should have written in the third person and didn't.......... I think?

Take care and absolutely no insult intends to you Kyzine!

Take care and good luck!

I kinda figured that BB, but that Packster has led me into naughtiness of reading all available meanings, and lowered my resistance to temptation.

(It was also my subtle way to say check his numbers, your exchange seems to have improved them quite a lot)

"no insult intends to you Kyzine!" - didn't think so BB, it's not your nature. Then again I've been here long enough to see/know that.

You two rather remind me of Fyz and me on Pluto - "bumpy" you'd call it, until we worked out "typing and meaning" commonalities - nowadays I think we get on quite well.

All my best and if you feel like a good laugh, read Pluto's Temperature: Newsletter Challenge (05/05/09)

ER = English Rose, a fine Young Lady of impeccable linguistic and numeric precision (whom takes a dim view of teasing - hence me thinks Kyzine is, sadly, currently standing, face to the virtual room corner, receiving sporadic but intense glares of disapproval) but as we are moving on, lets include "to a new thread".

Oh yeah - nearly forgot ()

I think you create revolution or war between people. You must be out of control, mainly of your life. You are an unhappy person, never succeeded on nothing valueable, and this acidity reflect your constant attack on others. You are mean and slack to criticize everyone who disagrees with you way of saying and doing thinks.

All you critics towards my point of view or saying cannot hurt and most of people see who you are. Yes, your name tells everything, and don't forget to suck your finger when nobody watching you. By Baby, Gil.

N.B.: I still recommand waterbourne primer to solve the problem of stains coming through of plaster at place of solvent based paint for better health for the applicator and all around she/he. Complements for that suggestion!!!

Helllloooo Europium,

I am still laughing! Good response to my note. If you are that way to point me out of the mass, watch your heart, you could surprizingly collapse one day. Do you use Crest? The background is bloody, watch your attitude, you can bite yourself. It will dammageable to your psychic system. Return to Earth, we are happy here with or without you, but we accept you the way you are, FunnY, Gil.

Hi JohnDG,

I wanted so much to say that but bit my tongue!

IMHO I do not think they realise the escapee is missing yet?

He/she only has to open their mouth and before they have said six words they are throwing insults around again.

If I knew where they lived I would send them one of those little sand-castle spades, they can gradually dig themselves, \deeper and,\deeper and,\deeper.

Certainly not out to make friends! I will not be answering him/her again. Apart from anything else I find the lack of discipline in the posts written makes them hard to understand anyway. I would oftentimes put that to one side and try to understand the meaning but, in this case it is like a square rubber super bouncy ball bouncing off anything and everything. I would not even let admit get away with some of the stuff which has been said. Mind you admin are in full control and under full discipline of what they say, that is the difference.

Take care.

Hi JohnDG,

Cheers my friend. I really do not feel like this very often. Bear in mind on more than one post I tried to talk this poster round, and still got a face of pumpkin pie. I spoken and become friends with others whom did not have 'English' as their first tongue, but they were people you could converse with and gave a sensible argument, but while they were they showed they cared and respected all on that post. This other guy/girl? - shows very little respect and even then manages to put a foot in it and lets another squeeze of insults out.

I am not gonna say anymore. Bye for now.

I wonder who the post from "anon" was really from. As no matter who it was and what they thought they saw in perhaps my post, as it was the previous one to that. Try reading the words and not between the lines to get my fully intended meaning.

After all my posts if anyone can honestly say they think I hate someone because they cannot type English well and or cannot put a sentence together, then I guess I am on the wrong site. I have stayed on posts with little more than three or four different members only, to try and find out the full meaning of a badly posted request, so I do not think in all fairness I can be accused of hate of any kind. End of story.

Hi Guess AKA Anon.

I am pleased you got back to me and I really do appreciate that, thank you!

I try very hard to treat people as I would wish to be treated. But I think this is perhaps the second or third time where I have had to say what I truly think about the writers posts and meanings in those posts.

Please forgive me for any inferred nastiness. You are obviously a Gent or you would not have gotten back to me so quickly.

Take care, and have a wonderful holiday.

Based on his linguistic skills I assume English is not his first language or his writing skills are not advanced. Either way, I think his meaning is discernible.

Frustrated as I may be with his derogatory comments on the jocular posts of some of our members I will not fault anyone on this international messageboard for their writing skills (only for lack of details)

But I am with you on the "we" aspect.

That sounds just like the shop I have just frequented!............. That sounds better than "bin in" right?

BTW, I got the camouflage coloured draws! Well, they last at least 6 months before I have to climb out of 'em. Scraping them down my legs............. Ermmm, I think I will stop there! Not for the want, but before I get reported and then arrested!

I still have a post of yours to reply to but just have not gotten round to it yet, sorry.

I will get there, just not sure when!!!!!!!!! LOL!

Good luck.

Alloo' Kris,

You are having the trouble too mit rust stains on you are under trousers?

You hav come to right site, my mon ami Gil has been helping with my trouser stains and has suggested some really comfy toilet papier.

Hoping to have many bundles of Good answers(GA's) for my posting here.

Gil has been tres' helpful , he is a painter and lives in the Canada, likes water based paints, does not the solvent or plastic.

Sorry to report to you the Kris that my new chartreuse mankini has already the stains on it, i think it was tar at the beach that I si on,

Do you still have you the camera?

Hello babybear's PackRat561,

You are confused. There is only air or less under your "hat"? I don't help you with the toilet paper suggestion. I want to eliminate the possibility that someone tells "What a stink!" you are. Your writing represent what you are but you can correct it by listening to others and writing down "what you want" to say. When you call Kris "the Kris" you are lucky to be not in a country that adoring Jesus. You criticize individuals, people, and religions. And , watch the tar, the black stain, which contains toxic polyphenols and other organic toxicities. Digest this and have a nice weekend, Gil.

My long (and witty, though I say it myself) reply was lost in a power surge. Ratty is correct - chill out, Gil. Nobody is intent on arguing too much here. Ain't no biggie. You may not have intended any 'slight' with naming me, but things don't always carry in writing. No worry - I have a thick skin

ps - toss with my name again, and I'll go feckin' ape. Badmouth members of good standing and you will get flamed to bits . Just saying. The thread title pretty much says it all about where we're at here.

G'day Packrat and Babybear, i must say i admire you both. You have tried very hard to help GB see the error of his/her posts. I am sure that you have heard the quote "Never argue with an idiot. People watching may not be able to tell the difference." but you put your own reputations on the line to respond in a helpfull manner.

You could have easily dismissed GB as an idiot and not replied to his/her posts, but instead you accepted her/him as an equal with a different opinion.

BTW i fully concurr that this post had given the cat his answer long before the fun started. I am still reading it soley for the fun and education.

THINGS I HAVE LEARNT

1. i can change avatatars

2. i can be silly and get a respectfull reply

3. my suggestion is in line with others' experience. Which gives me the confidence to use shellac again.

4. i found out that shellac can cover the gum around knots. A new use for me.

5. there are a lot of people on this forum who are very smart and knowledgable.

I would expect that all of these aforementioned people would also have very strong ideas and beliefs about one thing or another but they restrain themselves from "pushing their barrows' within a thread and instead start a new one on that topic alone. Leading to point---

6. posting etiquette

So to sum up... Your replies to GB have been educational, thank you

Hi Jimrat,

Thanks for the comment , seems like you have a good grasp of the situation. And shellac, as ancient as it is , seems hard to beat for just the circumstances you mentioned . I'll add that Babybear knows what he's talking about .

If you're up for a diversion and a little amusement, I'd suggest visiting The Bath Breaking Thread, good for some fun.

Take care, Packrat

G'day Kyzine, thanks for that. I remember seeing an episode of THE WORST JOBS IN HISTORY where they made purple dye from shellfish. It involved a very complicated and smelly process. To make shellac is less involved but still a complicated and undoubtably messy process. It makes me appreciate the depth of human endeavour over the millenia. I think that all of us who live now are living in the best period in human history.

Sorry, getting soppy.

Will go and self flagelate

Hi JIMRAT,

Looks like the "RATS" are finally taking over! LOL!

As a Decorator I would paint really Knotty Pine, which was used for most second fix apps with Shellac. And on not so knotty pine I would have a 'knotting' brush or two always ready. (Not too sure of the spelling there). I know at least one other post has mentioned this, and forgive me for not recalling your name, but this was used as part of the painting sequence and was always in the same box as the Primer and Undercoat.

I appreciate your mention personally JIM, thanks. I know of know "stupid" Members, with its consequential meaning. There is some I do not agree with, but when any job is done correctly there is often just one or two ways to get it done and that would come through in the various posts of skilled workers having already solved that problem.

I am pleased you have been able to change your Avavatatatatars!!!!! ROTFWL

I try to be respectful, but the rather silly preaching made themselves look silly, without any help from anyone. Since I have been a member I have found a kind and unwritten respect that is given out even when others do not agree and I try to echo that where possible, the few occasions I have not is where something is mentioned that is obviously not correct or perhaps that should be 'right', and where a very few times indeed the suggestion has been dangerous. Respect costs nothing, and should be automatically granted to those who have already proven their experience in their chosen job and on CR4.

As a member of just a few days I do not think at least one person did themselves any 'favours' at all on this thread, but I have to say they had a far easier time of it than my original first post/thread! It is the season of good will and that is sent to all on this thread and to everyone I have spoken to in the past year or so!

Take care and good luck to all!

Jim the Rat,

You have to remember, I never treated people idiot. You did! And you did with the permission of CR4. My polite and educational response was cut off. Just to repeat what I said earlier that cannot pass through to you. Return to kindergarden and follow elementary school program if you are able to swallow the knowledge that you ahve to acquire. You have to become a human being and be polite with others, Gil.

Gil this reads as an insult.

"Return to kindergarden and follow elementary school program if you are able to swallow the knowledge that you ahve to acquire"

And if you are not calling him an idiot - what are you calling him?

Please try to stop being your own worst enemy?

Hi Kyzine,

I said the same thing. I also realise that post 174 is an insult to packrat, JIMRAT, and me bb.

As I said in my reply to 174............... Oh dear! That means two consecutively insulting posts in a row. Insults with no named person can be lived with. Naming anyone as the one you wish to insult, is a no no.

I echo your thoughts which is why I am replying........... OK?

Good luck.

Hi Guest,

Thank you for posting on this.

I fully agree with your opinion also! This man has daemons somewhere that prevent any sense prevailing.

Oh well.................. Perhaps an 'ignore' in the best plan? Dispite my attempt to help he is not insulting me as 'one of the thre', see 174.

Good luck

Gil,

What you say in your post #173 I see as a direct attack against another member. If JIMRAT reports you for this you will get your knuckles rapped.

Just a friendly warning of the rules of the site.

Good luck, you may need it.

" ... the one to one and half kilogram of grey matter, which is unknown by your team ... "

It is obvious from this (in context) that you are stating that JIMRAT, babybear and packrat561 are individually and collectively decerebrate.

This is fallacious and abusive.

If you continue in this vein, I will report you to CR4 Administration.

Hi JohnDG,

Thank you for your posting and pointing out the error of him/her ways to Gil.

As I said and you may have seen, a general insult can and has to be accepted. But when a member actually names the people they are going to insult............. It cannot and should not be the 'norm'!

I will take the insult as a compliment, because I thought I only had two neurons, and they are lonely!

I think have had enough of my softly and kindly advice that I initially started to give.

Take care and thank you once again

And please keep the noise down; all of this yakking is coming through the CR4 crawlspace wall and I'm trying to work (even though it's Saturday night, feh).

Hi BabyBear,

You're right; threads like these are a great release after a looong work week. Oh, and I don't really mind the noise. Maybe when everyone is done with Del's plaster we can put some sound insulation in the crawlspace. And a pool table. Some electricity would be nice. Running water.

Oh, well. Happy Holidays to you, too!

Uh hello miss, sorry to disturb you by ringing your doorbell, needn't rushed to the door without dressing, but those are cute jammies, Oh , yes the reason I stopped, the boys and me were doing a driveway reseal, I mean acoustic insulation installation over on the next block and we had a couple of drums of , um, uh insulation , yeah that's it ,

we have enough "insulation" on the truck to do you a right nice job, um, no cash only , but a lifetime warranty is included in the price if you act now, before the cops, I mean before the shop closes, otherwise we'll be headed back to the campground.

Hi Del the cat,

Just one question. Did you solve your problem to your complete satisfaction? We have over 150 notes, answers, other questions, and most of the time, lugubrious and gloomy remarks without helping no one, just making the reading wild and crazy. I still suggest for your original problem to use a waterbourne sealer made specially to stop stain bleeding. Wish you a happy day, Gil.

Laughing my socks off !

Did you hear that Chambers Dictionary have restored 'gullible' to it's former spealling of 'gullable'. If you can't find your dictionary, pop down to the library and check. I'd look for a link, but I'm too busy with my studies of The Simpsons

Gil Becker and Packrat,

So far I have not seen much contribution out of you guys to other threads or blogs.

While it is okay in my opinion to speak of politics, I do dislike personal attacks or what I might call childish snottiness.

So far you have not appeared to be contributors of any particular value.

Del the Cat has a long history here. Sometimes he plays and then other times he strikes.

You may be in over your heads, for while we do like to joke around, typically we know a few things that ground our discussions.

I myself am willing to expose ignorance on occasion, and am particularly grateful to Jorrie the resident Physicist, for his patience as I attempt to understand things he knows about, that I really don't.

Garthh knows a lot about how to make energy from crap.

So far you have not shown us more than shit.

P.S. I know some about paint and must say at least that so does GB.

G'day Transcendian,

i too know a little about paints but not enough to to state categorically that waterbourne paint will cover a rust stain.

I am not even sure what a waterbourne paint is. I know of several types of water based paint.

1. P.V.A. usually at the cheaper end of the market and will not do this job.

2. Acrylic can be very good but again not a sealer.

3. Oil modified acrylic. Usually only for exterior use. Very tough but water can get under it and rot the timber it is on without the surface showing it.

So to reitterate; a shellac sealer seems to be the product of choice. It also gives employment to people in third world countries ( thanks for the link KYZINE )

regards

Jim
