Indesit No-Frost Fridge

12/16/2009 2:21 AM

I bought a fridge from a guy that repairs fridges . It works just fine. When the defrost cycle begins, it holds for about 15-20 minutes. The thing is that from time to time, while defrosting, The compressor seems to want to start but it doesn't. It sounds like switching on an off quickly. The fridge man says he does not know if this is normal or not.

Does anyone know if this should happen or not?

I read on the web that the no frost fridge has a heating element that melts the ice on the evaporator inside the fridge. While this process is on the run the compressor is automatically disconnected. With my fridge the disconnected compressor is not the case.

Could this be faulty electronics?

The brand is "Indesit". It had its electronics changed before I purchased it because it got burned- overvoltage in the power grid.

The thing is that the fridge works just fine. What I wonder about is the sound of the compressor when defrosting.

Thanks

I had almost the same case. My problem was that the sensor was not attached firmly to the cold body of the element and the incorrect switching on temperature were acted on, just to have it switched off immediately.

The other problem might just be the setting of the switching temperatures. during defrosting the switch on may be above the switch off.

Advise is to check the mounting and settings.

Perhaps the electronic control sub-assembly that was installed was not the EXACT replacement for the one that fried? I'm not sure how you could tell that now, unless you (or the friend) still has the original assembly. The new one might be "close enough" that most functions work as intended. Also check that all connections were made correctly when the new assembly was installed. As you said, I would think you would not want the compressor to come on during the defrost cycle, after all, the goal is to warm up the evaporator to melt the ice buildup. You wouldn't want the defrost heater and the compressor "fighting" each other during that time!

Check the starting capacitor on the compressor.

There is no problem with the compressor start. It starts just fine. It just wants to start when it should not- I think- when defrosting. I don't know if that's normal.

I think I have found the problem. It was the compressor. I recently had to move into another living space and also moved the frodge, just like first time, on its side in the back of the car. After cleaning and letting the fridge to rest for about 10-12 hours I tried to start it, but it would not start. Then I called the technician, he confirmed the compressor was stalling and had to be changed. Now with the new compressor the old problem seems to have disappeared.

Maybe the guy knew about the problem since when I called him in the first place, because only charged for the compressor, and not for his work. What he told me is that he charges only the compressor because I bought the fridge from him.

Either way, is not much of a matter because the fridge is working fine.

Best part is that now I have a broken compressor to dismantle . And the oil inside seems to be a very good lubricant - tested.
