This is a very wide-ranging question with no simple answer. As you may know, one magnet or electromagnet can be arranged to attract another. Regardless of the particulars, an electric motor consists of a rotating magnetic field (commonly a stationary set of coils or windings that are switched by a commutator or by phased voltages in a sequential fashion so that they generate a rotating magnetic field). This rotating magnetic field attracts a counterpart field in a rotor, so that the rotor "tries" to keep up. There are too many variations to try to describe, and they depend on the specific type of motor, but the "bottom line" is that the rotor turns in order to follow the rotating field of the stator. This explanation is no doubt a bit abstract, but it is the basic idea.
