GA's (Sorry, but yes again)

01/02/2010 8:20 AM

Mark,

I may be missing something obvious, but can you tweak the system so that we can see all a members GA's when viewing their profile ? It seems to be limited to just the dozen or so most recent. I doubt you could have anticipated how big CR4 would get, but it would be a nice add-on. I can't keep track of our resident Cat and other valuable members without such. Browsing the posts of a member helps to understand stuff a bit better. I'm not a big fan of a GA's meaningfulness, but it might help a little.

Thanks,

Kris

(excluding ones in the thread who's name must not be mentioned in polite circles?)

Look, if we carry on, Mark will never answer or take me seriously. Anyway, it's spelt 'appalling'.

Kris/Del, I was never so sure that the GA list is that good a guide. It relies on a professional reflective and dispassionate attitude - difficult for the 'feet of clay' human to 'always observe'.

Now days I actually think it is getting unworkable.

Fair enough on BBT it's a part of the fun to mess with the 'rankings', but I'm seeing in 'not comedy' other strings.

I notice Less voting by the Genuine poster and/or more votes 'disappearing' for no conceivable (or justified/explained) reason.

I think if you want 'value' in a GA, the best way to assure it is to publish who voted and which way, in the members voting drop-down.

I'm thinking what is happening at present, by an anonymous few, is frustrating the genuine voter and destroying the whole GA concept.

No point in reading GA stuff if the folk smart on topic are excluded.

But yes; said GA collection is "the best of CR4 wisdom" - assessable by visitors

Some good points there, Ky. BBT is a bit of a law unto itself, but the rest of CR4 needs to be taken more serious. We have some seriously clever people who post comments here. They don't always get the votes they deserve (although I doubt many of therm are bothered - they contribute out of generosity, rather than wanting accolades). What I'm chasing here is for Mark (mgaulin) to just tweak his code a little so that we can research a persons 'previous' before posting a reply. Most of my GA's are for posts that are complete and utter ******** ! The GA system isn't (in my opinion) much more worthy than the Memeber Title thing, but this small tweak (no, not me, the idea !) might help a little. Mark probably isn't reading because the dang thread has my name on it !

I spoke to moose of this overall conundrum of vote impact and Forum 'credibility' of GA's.

What I see you wanting is exactly the same as GA should convey.

I.e. Who is worth taking notice of in a PARTICULAR area?

Plus; how do you talk to a person sans a CV?

Are they having a bad day? Are they a habitual "over unity fan"? Are they 'outside' their knowledge base and/or full of shit; OR wanting to learn. If the latter, how do couch your input? Where is the common base?

If Mark is not reading because it has your name on it, then Mark is doing what the un-voters are doing for the same anal reasons.

Is this ENGINEERING!!!!!!! attitude?

NO! it is: "oh remember that CR4 forum full of idiots?" hahahahahahahaha! What ever happened to that? - invitation to outcome attitude.

Signed Probie Kz

(not Ky, ky - different guy - i.e. Mark, don't ban him)

ROFL - you crack me up, Kyz (in a good way).

I guess the bottom line is that you get out what you put in - a bit of research etc into anyones posts wouldn't kill us. My only point is that it seems like a minor tweak to display more than just the 'most recent' GA's. By the time I've read PM's and read BBT, there isn't much time for anything else. Oh, gawd........it may be deliberate !

What cranks me sometimes is that when I go to a members profile they rarely seem to give much in the way of bios.

I've not much updated or changed mine since I first joined, but at least if you do look at my profile I do say a bit about where I am coming from, and what in general I'm trying to figure out.

Considering the facts of my education, I have to admit I am proud of the number of GAs I have.

Truly I have struggled to grasp things that Jorrie or Roger, who are better educated than I am sometimes write about.

I have more than once suggested to the administrators that a more true reflection of members contributions would combine GAs and Tread starts that entertained and educated us.

The simple 500 posts and you're a Guru, means some nuts appear more worthy of attention than really warranted.

I am pleased when I come up with a thread that "Veterans" enjoy batting around.

Most veterans do tend to warn newcomers that the Forum can be addictive.

Where else can we go for a fair fight above the neck?

Good comments, Mr T.

Personally I haven't stuck anything on my biog because of a general paranoia. I'm always happy to chat further via PM (not that doing so provides any added security). A number of folf such as your good self give a web homepage, and that is a great way to intro yourself to newcomers. I use the computer for keeping in touch with people, and there's nothing I could really post on a web page of my own that would be of interest.

GA's are worth reading, though they don't always guide a person to the best stuff in any given thread. I don't know off-hand how many GA's Jorrie and Roger have, but I bet it's not a fair reflection of their intellect/contribution. The fact that somebody such as me could be titled "Guru" alongside these guys is a bit squirm-inducing. CR4's FAQ does point ouit that members titles are just a bit of fun, but some newcomers don't spot that.

I've digressed a bit - my request is simple; A button that will display all a members GA's. Perhaps it's more difficult to code than I imagine, but it sounds useful (to me). CR4 has no shortage of highly clever people, and an afternoon reading their top rated posts would be one well spent.

Of interest in un-voting interpretation of "off topic" v.s anonymous "you're wrong".40

And the 'de-motivation quotient' this causes.

Reminds me of the one about the warring natives...the chief of one tribe was frightened that the other tribe would steal his throne so he hid it up in the rafters of his round house.
It fell down in the night and killed him...

The moral of the story?

People who live in grass houses shouldn't stow thrones

For more of these, search the term "feghoot." This one and many others appeared on the "Candid Camera" TV show in the 1960s or so. Typically 3-part puns with a fairly elaborate set-up. An (un)aquired taste?
