Consult the genset specs for how much fuel it uses per hour. Determine how many hours of spare fuel you might need (longest expected outage). Multiply these two numbers together. That would be a reasonable size to make the fuel tank.

If it takes 3 days to obtain a fuel delivery, size the tank for 4 days, according to the previous rationale.

I am curious as to what you mean by "local authority," and what influence, if any, such an "authority" could exert on your ability to obtain fuel from a supplier, other than to be an idiot and block such transactions. But my country, the US, has almost gotten as bad as any other podunk bureaucracy....

You do need to determine just what your bottleneck might be, and then negotiate or politick (or bribe?) accordingly. God, I hate to be such a cynic, but that's life, I guess.

dear sir in INDIA there is so many rule for safety purpose so there is risk of approval inace of fire fighting, waste disposal, petrolium rule. so before designing the system we have to take approval about all these things by making a drawings for approval if without approval we start work then local authority will not allow execution work for example we have to do waste disposal i have done my design for this and if authority does not approve it my design will waste now about fuel tank size i design tank, as per my requirement but authority allow that in that area transaction of tanker is not possible as per ur requirement so my design go waste so it is gd before design go to approval authority to take the approval so i was asking some standard or recommendation which are approved by govt authority there are so many laws like National building code, CPWD Specification, Bye laws, local regulation & Authority, pollution board, CPHEEO Manual etc

There has to be an Indian Standards bureau of some sort that issues standards for this sort of thing (until post #6, the forum didn't know that India is the country of installation!).

What standards is the customer requiring the tank to be made to? If the customer hasn't specified it then there is no basis upon which to accept or reject a design.

Hire a local person with the proper knowledge/education/experience/government contacts to advise you.

Those of us outside of India don't know your local standards and cannot give advice.

HI Mani,

It will be better if you talk to your D.G mfr. he will be able to give you proper reply as he knows local rules and supply conditions.

The unit will consume about 0.3 pounds of fuel per horsepower per hour (please do the math for metric as I am too tired right now) and you need at least 24 hours of fuel. To convert kVA to horsepower multiply kVA x 0.8 to get kW and then multiply that by 1.4 (approx) to get HP. Store more than 24 hours of fuel if your fuel supplier cannot re-supply you in 12 hours time. Do not over build your fuel storage (if diesel) as too much fuel can start to grow bacteria and block fuel filters. You must periodically consume the fuel and replace it with fresh fuel to keep bacteria levels low. The fuel supplier can tell you how long you can store fuel before bugs (bacteria) will grow.

Good luck !

Dear Mr. manis2k3knit,

Your question is general in nature. You have to inform the following.

1. No.of Hours of Generator Working.?

2. How much Load is connected to the Generator.?

3. What is the capacity of DG Set installed.?

The basis of the fuel Requirement, for a healthy Engine is at the rate of 0.208 Kg./KW.Hr. referred as the SPECIFIC FUEL CONSUMPTION.

You have to ensure, the load on DG Set is minimum of 60%, so as to have optimum Fuel Efficiency.
