Scientists push "Doomsday Clock" back a minute

01/16/2010 3:14 PM

What to do with all that extra time?

Scientists pushed back the hands on the symbolic Doomsday Clock by one minute citing hopeful developments in nuclear weapons and climate change.

The symbolic clock that shows how close mankind is to self-annihilation was moved back to six minutes before midnight from five minutes on Thursday.

The Bulletin of Atomic Scientists, which maintains the clock and puts an illustration of it on its cover, attributed the move to efforts by world leaders to reduce their countries' nuclear arsenals and collaborate on climate stabilization...

When the clock was created in 1947, it was set at 7 minutes to midnight. It has been adjusted only 18 times before Thursday' move. The last was in 2007, when the BAS moved it forward by two minutes citing North Korea's test of a nuclear weapon, Iran's nuclear ambitions and a renewed U.S. emphasis the military utility of nuclear weapons.

Rhetorical question du jour: what will it take to 'dismantle' this clock?

A nuclear weapon, or a Δ+20°C global meltdown, whichever comes first.

The clock is symbolic, and was created during a different time.

This symbolic clock is out of kilter for it was created really more in reaction to nuclear devices, and in a period of bi polar power balance, than the multipolar power balance we currently live in as era.

The clock is really based on the threats Weapons of Mass Destruction represent.

Now Weapons of Mass Destruction are embodied in Nuclear, Chemical, and Biological Weapons.

To dismantle this "Clock" would require two or three things.

One would be to empower a secret army intent with the mission of killing and capturing those who have or control Weapons of Mass Destruction.

Two would be that this secret army of killers intent on taking out of all arsenals had some success.

Three would be that they had full success at eliminating all Weapons of Mass Destruction from all private or public arsenals.

And then this secret army of killers realizes that they must kill all of humanity to keep anyone from ever creating these weapons again...

Except for the secret part, that seems to fit the U.S. and some of its allies, although nobody knows what nobody knows. Trouble is, once they are able to eliminate everyone elses, will they be willing to eliminate all of theirs and give up that position of power? And even if that does happen, it will only be a matter of time untill someone (sound familiar) steps up to claim that power and start the cycle all over again. To eliminate the threat you have to eliminate the knowledge and that can never happen no matter how many books you burn.

Interesting note, it was initially set to 7 minutes to midnight not because of the critical time, the artist Martyl Langsdorf had set that way because it balances the picture for aesthetics only. she also said the budget was very light........I think it was nothing because her husband or one of her friends was on the board

only after awhile did it take a symbolic approach on the condition of the world leaders and events, for viewers just to take a glance and know what kind of predicament they are in

For watch commercials I believe there is a standardly used time, maybe 2:50, or something like that, cause it looks good. Really I have forgotten...

At any rate I do consider all Weapons of Mass Destruction as worthy of work to be eliminated from all public and private arsenals.

Actually Nuclear Weapons held by only 2 powers at one time did have utility during the BiPolar Power balance.

I believe there was one moment in history, when Truman recognized that since only the US possessed this power, it could be withdrawn.

Once the Soviet Union gained this weapon, it could not.

I myself along with some others do consider Weapons of Mass Destruction an undue threat to my class, the working class, and one of the few areas where I would authorize the use of overt and covert violence to as much as possible eliminate.

Ideally the Nation States that have such weapons, such as the US, Russia, France, Israel, Pakistan, India, and North Korea would get their hand out of the monkey jar, and give them up.

Should they ever do so, well then they would have a strong incentive to join together to make sure nobody else had such weapons.

At this time I have been told that as many as 85? 10 to 15 megaton Soviet made Suitcase Atomic Bombs are unaccounted for.

At this time at a minimum I, would not be so shy about asking spies to find these things, and at least get them out of the mix of threats my class faces when we have enough to worry about.

The goal of the UN to eliminate all war, while idealistic and worthy a goal, does not seem to have been, or do I expect it to become realistic.

Therefore in light of that, I would appreciate at least that it concentrate on enforcing rules of engagement. Funny as horrible as many wars have been, and always are, that there have been rules applied, followed, and enforced.

Only precedent I know of in relation to weapons of war, was the time the Japanese outlawed firearms from the 13 hundreds on through the 15 hundreds.

That 7 minutes to midnight was for balance, it only showed a quarter of the clock, On commercials it would be 1:50 or 10:10 to get a good balance

At any rate I do consider all weapons of Mass Destruction as worthy of work to be eliminated from all public and private arsenals.

agreed

As long as mankind maintains a warlike attitude, Doomsday will always be a threat.

Since man has always been warlike, the haves vs. the have-nots, it is likely that the threat of the anialation of man will be around for a long time, at least until he finds a way to meet everyones needs and desires. Perhaps that may never be achieved, but it is a worthy goal.

"at least until he finds a way to meet everyones needs and desires." Well, as long as some have the desire to rule the world, we'll never be able to meet those desires, so we'll always have the threat. It is not "needs" as in the poor who have little that is the threat, but mankind's warlike attitude as you mentioned. It is therefore the desires that endanger us.
